Because I've never seen VW play anything. were you at Pitchfork festival in 2008 or 2012? they played the small stage in 2008 on the Saturday, and they played a larger stage in 2012. I was there in 2008 but I’m pretty sure I skipped them. Did not attend in 2012. Side note: other than ShoalsFest in 2021 (which kind of doesn’t count since it’s just one stage), I’ve been happily fest-free since 2015.

Show was good. Stuck with the lawn. Could see way more than this board led me to believe. Princess was really fun, especially the pinball song from Sesame Street. VW setlist was pretty wild. Some songs I wanted to hear and didn’t but don’t really care much as I’ve seen them enough times to not stress it. The SNL style finale was pretty funny.

I left after a few VW songs, what is Cocaine Cowboys?
First time driving to Northerly and it was way easier to park than I anticipated. I'd do that again.
Also the most insane security of any show I've seen there. No less than 3 staff measured my bag.

N2 was better than N1. My only complaint is no Giving Up The Gun. More words tomorrow. VW opened night 2 as a three piece, and it worked. Sometimes less is more. I love how they restructured some of the classic songs including Ezra doing all the vocals on "Hold You Now". Other highlights for me included "Step", "Hannah Hunt", & "Bryn". It was truly fantastic two night run, I left feeling full. I just hope I don't have to wait another 5 years to see them in Chicago again.

It's mainly Married in the Gold Rush with some other covers mixed in, but then they do this long extended part where they have people come out and play Cornhole to win some sort of prize. Goes on for like 15 minutes and it's a massive waste of time

I made a sign requesting Tweezer. Baio acknowledged it and told CT in which he pointed to my sign and screamed at Ezra to play Phish, but was ignored. 😕 A great two night run!

Night two was indeed better than night one. Got a lot of songs I had been hoping for including Hannah Hunt, which made E really happy to hear as well. I thought the way they opened the show was pretty much perfect, and I have to say a lot of the new tracks did hit this weekend. Pravda, Mary Boone, Ice Cream Piano, and Capricorn will hopefully be setlist mainstays on future tours. Not sure I can assign a Dead era to this iteration of the band at this exact moment but I’m toying with early 80s. If anyone disagrees let me know.
Anyways great two night run. Was fun to see so many of you and take E to her first Vampire Weekend shows. Great band

Lawn at Northerly is a fine experience. Security is trying way too hard for surely minimum wage work- they weren't allowing the bags for the blankets for gods sakes. MBA brain is gonna kill this once great nation. Shoutout to the other security guards clowning the hell outta the guy who tried to take my EpiPen.
VW sounded great but, for me, it's getting to the point of diminishing returns, especially if they're gonna keep doing this cover heavy encore/cocaine cowboys thing (which I was kinda bummed never happened last night just because I wanted to see the absurdity in real time). If they're only gonna play 3 songs from MVOTC going forward I get it but I'm also not gonna pretend OGWAU is a good album, you know? But I definitely got my money's worth for $25 bucks. As previously noted the Maya Rudolph Prince covers set was absolutely hilarious and I'm very glad that's in my trapper keeper. The confusion on the audience members throughout was also great. Just real "I dare you to take this seriously" energy. I didn't get there in time for Ra Ra Riot.
For some reason it was my partner's and my brother's first Vampire Weekend show- they both enjoyed it but don't know if they'd see them again.
I also was impressed with how quickly the 146 bus operation was running at the end of the night- that might be the move for the cost conscious idiots like me going forward, I usually just walk.

I genuinely think Zach Bryan is something special. I really didn't know if it'd translate to a stadium (sold out stadium) and yet he absolutely filled that place. The energy was great and maybe the only song that didn't work great was "The Way Back" from the new album which he hadn't played before. Everything else was fun and had the crowd going wild. And "Revival" is just one of the best live songs, just an absolute blast.
Sound wasnt amazing as expected in a stadium and I really miss the in the round setup he did in arenas, but overall I was surprised how well he filled the room. Dude is a stadium act, I can accept it after that show.
Jason Isbell opened and was great as always but the crowd sucked for him as I expected. Lot of chatter over the set. The rock songs obviously worked a lot better because they were louder than the talking, and I wish he had focused on those a bit more because even though I love some of the more acoustic songs they were a bit tough in a chatty stadium. "This Ain't It" towards the end was awesome and fit for the stadium. A bonus Isbell set is always a lot of fun though I do kind of wish he just came through for a headlining set instead. Crowd was a lot better for ZB, not too many chompers. Very young crowd though, as I'd expect

Not sure I can assign a Dead era to this iteration of the band at this exact moment but I’m toying with early 80s. If anyone disagrees let me know. It’s probably that phase of the Dead where they were actually good, which we all know does not exist Went to two shows last night. First was the long bull at Metro. Missed the first opener Daley Doom, who I heard were good. First saw Stress Positions, they were okay, I thought the guitarist was going to fall off the stage a few times but luckily he did not. Next was We Were Not Invited, who were not great, started off as a Korn wannabe, but got a little better as the set went on. Of course the majority of the crowd (only like 100 people) were there for them. I had somehow completely forgot about Greet Death, I think was confusing them with another band Heet Death. Last saw Greet Death around 2019 at the Bottle, guess they haven’t put out an album since then so that is why. But they sounded great, it’s a shame they are not any bigger. Last was meth., they were great as usual, but there were probably less than 50 people left at that point. Went over to Sleeping Village right after that, got there in time for Edging. They were fine but not great. Went there for the headliner Lambrini Girls. They’re a garage punk trio that only has a few songs out now. They were good, but spent half the set talking and making the crowd do participation things, somehow stretched out a set that should have only been like 30 minutes to an hour. Would be okay as a quick fest side stage band otherwise.

Honestly, the lawn was soooo much better than I expected. I could see the entire stage and wasn’t even close to the front. Screens do their job well. Sure, the energy lacked a bit, but 25 dollars without fees for a band I’ve seen a bunch of times so you know whatever. Also, I paid 55 for VIP parking and once again very happy with this move. I don’t know what standard parking costs but I imagine it’s not cheap enough to be worth the difference in being in my car one minute after exiting the gate. Sure, it takes a little while to get out of the lot, but I honestly think they have gotten traffic direction down to a science at this venue. Ten minutes or so lot to expressway.

DoMore, which generally sucks, continues its great July for me. Tedeschi Trucks Band & Margo Price was as good as a free ticket gets. First time seeing Margo since like 2018 unless you count her sit ins at my favorite festival, Sacred Rose. Strays songs sound really good and her band can play. I'm not convinced her guitar is plugged in but whatever .
TTB was great but arguably ~too~ respectable? Something about it feels less degen than these other jam bands but the musicianship is as good as it gets. I see a lot of very good guitarists but I audibly said holy shit by like the third Derek solo. There's so much to be said about her voice that it's easy to forget that Susan can really shred too. It was my first time seeing TTB since Roo 2014 and there I was more focused on babysitting our guy Rango, who had been murdered by some of Friend of the Board Todd's edibles, than the band so in many ways was like my first time.
Covers selection v nice- Wah Wah, What Is and What Should Never Be, Come and Go Blues, I Walk On Guilded Splinters, I Cant Make You Love Me.
Very much a perfect bill for summer music outdoors.

Vampire Weekend was exceptional after that rain delay. So glad we got Diplomat’s Son. We had decided to leave at encore because I didn’t need to see a bunch of covers plus Walcott for the third time in a week but as we got to the gate I heard them start an actually planned and rehearsed Reuben and Cherise cover so I booked it back. Once they started the other covers I slipped back out and I did see I missed I Think Yr a Contra but I guess that’s motivation to see them another one million times. Great band, great show, let’s get a spring tour where they do a show or two in Madison please

But yeah, I figured the rain delay would make them streamline the set a bit more to cut out some of the bullshit. They still did like 20 minutes of covers and played til midnight, but very good set as usual. I still can't believe they didn't make people actually evacuate during that storm, but turned out that was the right call, so good on them

That honestly makes me feel so much better that he only did a couple lines lmao. Also I was shocked at how well the pavilion prevented rain from coming in when it was rolling in sideways. I brought a poncho and never needed it

Deftones, what can I say, I have to thank the TikTok algorithm for convincing Lollapalooza to book a real band. that was a perfect fit for the Thursday metro surprise.
It was a treat to hear all my favorite songs from my weightlifting playlist in the metro. I thought their guitar tech did a great job filling in for Stef

Vince Staples show wasn't great at the Vic last night, only because he was having tech issues the entire time. Basically they had 2 laptops, one with the new album tracks and one with the old songs, and there were major issues with the one with the old tracks. So he only did like 3 older songs and had to keep stopping.
Hopefully they get that all resolved before the Lolla set today.
Also saw Wisp at Reggie's Friday night, it was pretty good and the band sounded really good, but I think they were using canned vocals the entire time, which seems unnecessary for a shoegaze band where you barely understand what they are saying normally anyways
Before that saw a few bands at Cobra Lounge, Kerosene Heights being the only one I cared about. Everyone should go see that band, they are great

Two Door Cinema Club played Tourist History in full at the Metro last night, which is exactly what I would want from a Two Door Cinema Club show in 2024. The crowd was into it and the whole show was a great big sing-along; and to the best of my knowledge no one passed out. Great show, but I think I will need a nap at some point today.

First time seeing Foo Fighters last night. It was apparently their largest American show in terms of total attendance, so that's kind of a neat bragging right we have now. Show was good. A bit too much banter from Grohl, but it was mostly fun. They did a brief Tenacious D cover, and Wolfgang Van Halen came out to do Hot For Teacher, but I think it was pretty much the same set they've been playing otherwise. Pretenders were phenomenal - would love to see them in a smaller venue at some point. Chrissie Hynde still sounds incredible.
The Taylor Hawkins tribute seems rehearsed and awkward. I'd honestly love to hear if he makes the same comment at other recent shows about looking up at the sky and looking for a shooting star, because if so, *cringe*

It has been kind of a crappy summer. My SIL came to visit and seriously broke her leg (requiring surgery), Mrs. Doso and I both got COVID, we had to cancel our trip to Chicago (to see Slobberbone/Square Roots/Def Leppard), the weather here has been intolerably hot and humid for weeks, we haven't seen a single show at the bandshell, yada yada yada. Which is all to say this is probably the first time in eons that I have had a six week gap between shows during the summer months. Feels very weird. But I rectified it tonight by seeing Kaitlin Butts at Brooklyn Made. Seems to be really hit or miss with up and coming alt country (or is she just country?) artists who come through town and this was one of the misses (strictly in terms of attendance). It's a 500-capacity venue and there may not have quite been 100 people there tonight. But Kaitlin and her band played their fucking asses off regardless and everyone who was there seemed like they REALLY wanted to be there, which made for a great atmosphere. They ran through their regular set and I expected they'd come back for a single-song encore like they had for their previous shows on this tour. Instead, she came out and played the closing track from her new album, "Elsa", followed by a full-band cover of Chappell Roan's "Red Wine Supernova" (which imo sounded much more interesting than the original) and then the usual encore piece, a cover of Shania Twain's "Any Man of Mine". Not sure what we did to deserve the lengthy encore including two songs they haven't performed on this tour, but I felt very grateful. It was only my second show at Brooklyn Made, but I remain of the opinion that it's the best sounding room in the city with easily the best house lighting rig, even compared to venues several times its size. Thanks to rango420 for urging me to catch Morgan Wade at Bowery Ballroom in early 2023 where I saw Kaitlin open as a solo act and became interested in her music. And also thanks to krentist for the quip about her set being the best of Lolla Sunday - that gave me the extra motivation to make it to the show despite my pre-tiredness.

Got my value's worth for the Tirzah show last night at Metro, which was $0.00 (thankfully Metro was giving away guest list spots the day before the show). Not a very interesting show, she barely moved on stage the entire time, there was no video or any other backdrop or anything behind her, pretty much just one spotlight behind her the whole time and one pointed at the ceiling. She did 2 or 3 old songs, then pretty much the newest album, then one more song and that was it. Cheers to the guy by me though who was raging like it was the heaviest dance show ever the whole time though.

I caught The Gaslight Anthem with Joyce Manor on Saturday. I would say Gaslight Anthem were high on my "bands ive listened to the most but have not seen live" list of bands that I could still see live, it was nice to knock them off the list. Got a pretty solid setlist that was heavy on 59 sound and had a couple American Slang songs too. I would say American Slang is actually the album I have more nostalgia for, I was really into that in high school, 59 Sound hit harder later, so I would have liked even more from it but I can't really complain. The set maybe slowed down a little in the middle but then ended really strong. I had heard mixed reports on Brian's voice nowadays but I thought he sounded solid for this show, which was nice. I think that definitely scratched my itch though, I would definitely see them again at a festival but I don't need to go out of my way to see them again. But I was happy with this show. Although I can't say I'm not susceptible to getting suckered one day by a 59 sound or American Slang anniversary tour. But nice one to add to the trapper keeper
Joyce Manor was awesome. They somehow got through 20 songs in 45 minutes and it was just pure energy, lots of bangers. I've listened to a few of their albums but never seen them, this made me want to listen more. Almost a weird choice for Gasight Anthem because the music was so energetic that it almost made the songs in the headlining set feel less so, despite them being clear rock songs. Anyways I'm gonna catch these guys next time they are in town, I've come close a few times and I regret not doing it previously. That may have ignited an itch to see them again vs feeling good with TGA

Yeah, I saw Gaslight Anthem when they toured for The 59 Sound and it was a great show, but I don't need to see them again. Didn't like American Slang much, and it was diminishing returns after that.
