He would record like 2 minutes of every song and then text the video to his friend. Very strange. the guy in front of me would start recording in the middle of a song, then record through the next song too. i glanced at his screen a few times and saw 6-7 minute durations. his zooming was so tight that the whole shot was either jack's face or the guitar. everything looked horrendous. (in the crowd shot that metro posted on twitter/instagram, he's the guy holding the camera directly above the security guard on the right.) im glad buzz was able to make it to the jack white show

My favorite Lollaboard moments as always are 'I spent $150 to have an incredible uncomfortable night where everything was annoying and sucked and than "Seven Nation Army" was played. Great night!"
A Mind set that can only come from people who spent years going to a horrible music festival.

That Cure show tonight will go down as one of my favorites. Incredible setlist and vibes, and even a couple of “mistakes” that were handled very gracefully and with levity.
Troxy isn’t a bad venue. Interior looks cool and the process getting in was fairly smooth for such a show. We were on the floor and got there early, so no issues with sight lines. It’s kinda like the Riv in layout and there might be some spots on the main level where it’s hard to see the stage.

Sting is part of a group of aging musicians, that in recent years I have felt a much greater sense of urgency to see (or in some cases, see again) before it's too late. I've flirted with seeing him a number of times in the past, but happy to report I finally got him in the TK as of last night.
Sting is still in great shape and his voice remains completely intact, he was belting it out last night. He does not sound or look like a 73 year old, I guess it must be all that yoga and tantric sex. He played a two hour, greatest hits set that was perfect for someone like me who was seeing him for the first time. The three piece band worked well, I had no idea that his guitarist (who also looks really good for his age) had been with him for 35 years. I was also a little surprised at just how old his audience was, MPH and I were easily some of the youngest people in attendance. This was my first time seeing a concert at the Auditorium Theater, it's a beautiful theater but I understand why it plays as a second fiddle to the Chicago Theater down the street. Fun night and a great show, and now I officially don't have tickets for anything going forward. I'll need to change that soon.

House of Blues Chicago is a true piece of shit. Sound is muddy if you're in the wrong spots on the floor. Everyone who works there is dead in the eyes. $8.50 with tip for a liquid death- Aragon is $5- so I can't even imagine what a shit beer is there. You cannot see from the 2nd balcony you're not in the seated, $300 a seat VIP section. No wonder I hadn't been there in 12 years and lord willing it'll be another 12 before I go again. If the government actually breaks up the Live Nation-Ticketmaster terrorist organization conglomerate I think one of the conditions of the break up should be every single one of these buildings throughout the country is razzed to the ground and the earth they stood on salted. I might write my alive senator this weekend about such a thing. In spite of/despite of all that, I got $25 of entertainment out of the 85% of Southern Rock Opera Tour by the Drive By Truckers. I am extremely grateful for doso's review from a bit ago because I probably would've been upset had I not known they deviated from the album as much as they did during the show. For $25 and going solely to hear like 5 songs (I started to peak on my edible when the show started for 3 of them so, nailed it). As far as a spot in this godforsaken place I wound up in the first balcony/middle level right next to the VIP section- clear view, ok sound (the whole night was somewhere between muddied and good and the band had at least 3 technical issues I counted with equipment on stage during the show). I could not tell if the elderly liberal hoosiers next to me thought I gamed the system by finding that spot or were just jealous that I have still functioning knees and can stand a whole show. I would probably see the Truckers again in the right context- I am already hitting my point of diminishing returns after 3 shows- but would be extremely venue dependent. Also, I ate at the EDM Portillos twice last night because that whole area is a toxic wasteland and it's the only good option.

Went back to Outset again last night for Foxing. I should have been paying attention to that band a lot sooner, I had them lumped in with like Cage the Elephant and other bland bands like that, but they are a really good emo band. Their new album is really great, and thankfully they mainly stuck to that.
From Indian Lakes were fine, another Explosions in the Sky-ish band with vocals. Pictoria Vark was fine too, not great yet but could be interesting given time.
One thing is I guess Outset won't have their patio open all year like I thought they would, it was already blocked off last night even though the weather wasn't awful.

Meanwhile, 60+ yuppie couple, instead of seeing Sting, DBT, Foxing, or the Cure last night, goes to the Aragon via do312more for real quick 10 song 30 minute sets each from Militarie Gun and Drain, and were home by 8:30.
(after Danny Brown a couple of yrs ago at Thalia, I didn't want to stand through another set of his; we'll have to catch knocked loose the next time they come to town)

The lead singer mentioned the now-defunct Kemper Academy in Boonville (30 minutes from Columbia), where they filmed Child's Play 3. He said he and some friends watched that movie on mushrooms, and thought it had aged well. The band sounded locked in and really great.

The Stevie Wonder show was great ibut he was potentially having too good of a time. He got thru about 10 songs in the first 100 minutes between long rambling stories about Chicago and Kamala Harris and his family that all followed a similar structure of him whispering a swear word and than losing the thread and than a band interlude. Last 70 minutes where somebody clearly told him how long he had already been on stage was especially great. Played about 30-45 minutes longer than other shows on the tour but 1 less song lol. Me and Neader were essentially sitting in the stage

Board darlings Chat Pile were great again last night like everyone has said. Mood was definitely dampened by the election though, would have been much more enjoyable any other night of the year.
Had two really great openers, Agriculture were awesome and I was surprised how much they could shred. Porcelain were a really good opener too, trying to find their albums on Tidal but it isn't easy since there's a ton of acts with that name.

I appreciated how both of these bands were loud but kind of had their own flavors. I would say Agriculture was a little more black metal-y, with all the blast beats and screaming.

wish i could've seen those openers, but the halloween chat pile show i saw was a late addition, so they got a few other bands to open that were friends of theirs since agriculture and porcelain couldn't make that show.

I predicted that last night's Creed / 3 Doors Down / Mammoth WVH show would be somewhat of an honorary election celebration, and anticipated lots of red and some weird attitude. Thankfully, I got none of it (not that I watched a ton of the show). The weirdest and most uncomfortable thing I witnessed all night was 3 Doors Down playing with an American flag just sitting there on a flagpole on the side of the stage. I saw two campaign-style graphic tees in the crowd, and eventually discerned they said "Bourbon / Whiskey 2024" and "Creed 2024" both of which I was okay with. The Creed tour is a weird beast. The sincerity with which they take themselves is both adorable and confusing. In terms of sense of humor, I was expecting it to be like the Limp Bizkit tour that went out in sheds this summer, which I'd been referring to as a "meme tour," not that it wasn't still very-well-sold. Creed, however, is looking to distance themselves as far from meme territory as possible (despite a Dallas Halftime 2001 shirt being sold at merch). Stapp still paces the stage like each trip to the downstage-edge is a new summit of a mountaintop. His body language and facial expressions sell him as the perfect front-man for the music. Which may not be very good, but they played it to a ~full house of 13k. I don't think (?) they have any new music, so I doubt Creed believes they are more than a decent nostalgia act, but their attitude is very much "we are here to once again stand atop the world" as opposed to "we are here to have a little bit of fun; have a budweiser." They sent an email that I pasted some of in the Work Thread, about how they didn't want to see any more backstage welcome material punning "With Arms Wide Open," which is fair. But kind of a funny story is that every month, I have to sit in this marketing brainstorming meeting that I despise, mostly because its the marketing department outsourcing the conceptualizing duties of their jobs while calling it a "brainstorm." So anyway, a few weeks ago I'm sitting there on my phone mostly ignoring everyone, and when we get to Creed I say "we should put banners on the escalators that say "Can you take me higher"" sarcastically without ever even looking up, sort of just throwing out a contribution that I don't expect to be taken seriously, to fulfill my obligation here. I then promptly go on vacation for like 4 days and don't check my email once. When I return, there is a roll of 2' x 4' vinyl adhesive banners in my office that literally say "CAN YOU TAKE ME HIGHER?" and I find an email from the marketing director that says she thought the idea was 'brilliant' and budgeted for them, got them designed, printed etc. Blew my mind.

just for fun i looked for cheap tix on stubhub for the okc creed show over the weekend and man there was nothing and the whole thing was sold out. didn't think that was gonna happen, but i guess creed fans are all-in in 2024.
3 doors down played the university i work at 20 or so years ago and i was working it, and during their soundcheck i was standing by the soundboard and i could hear their singer but couldn't see him. i noticed people looking at me and laughing and apparently the singer was right next to me serenading me with "kryptonite" :–(

Marvelous 3 was good again last night. Similar to last year's shows but they played 3 newer songs mid-set instead of dumping them towards the end.
One interesting part for the oolllllllllds on the board. Butch was talking about playing a cover of a Chicago band, and then started playing a Pumpkins riff. But he stopped that, and they then played a song by Enuff Z'Nuff. They played New Thing, a song I haven't thought about in probably 20+ years, and the singer from the band came out and did that with them. That was a good surprise, I didn't think many people outside the Chicago area even know who they were.

I went and saw the Harry Potter play last night. It was good! I wish I had sprung for better tickets because the balcony in the Nederlander is farther away than I remember - pretty much couldn't see facial expressions. Floor seats are so absurdly priced, though. The production/visual tricks are insane and it was nice watching all of that from that view.
