Russell will be due like $5M in arbitration if the Cubs tender him. He's arguably not worth that anyway, and the positive PR of dumping him should make it an easy decision, even if it's for the wrong reasons.

Worth noting MLB's statement says their investigation is still open from last year.

He's absolutely worth double to triple that on an annual basis which leads me to believe that the Cubs won't just cut him.

There's a reason the Cubs picked up Murphy at the deadline.

He's still a 2 WAR player, so he's clearly worth the arb money if he wasn't an absolute shitbag.

An offense like the Cubs can get by with Russell in the lineup pretty easily with what he contributes on defense. He's not a blackhole at the plate.

On a lesser team more starved for offense, he would likely be moved. Also, I seriously doubt he would get 2 or 3 times his 2019 arb salary on the open market.

With this cloud hanging over his head, no way in hell. I do think middle-infielders well below 30 are going to be valued higher than you're suggesting.

I feel like 2 WARish middle infielders aren't always valued at presumed market rate. We're now on the third straight team that is trying to dump Starlin Castro's contract even though he has been outperforming it.

So you're saying the Cubs are going to dump Russell and get Castro back, perfect.

Oh hey the Yankees, too. Remember how the Reds tried to get rid of Chapman super quickly after he unloaded a gun near his wife and now the dude has a World Series ring? Cubs and Yankees have both made out marvelously. Pro sports and their treatment of these shit bags is just terrible. Getting eliminated by that POS two years in a row was fucking infuriating

Castro brought back Stanton to the Yankees and is now on the Marlins who are trying to trade anyone who is breathing and upright, so maybe not the best example.

Castro was included in the Stanton deal as a salary dump so that the Yankees could stay under the luxury tax. He cleared waivers in August. No one wants the contract.

If the Sox lose their last four games, they'll have their first 100-loss season since 1970.

On the bright side, I got to see Joe Mauer in his gear one last time. He was the reason I wanted to stay behind the plate in high school, since he was the only other 6'5" catcher I'd ever seen.
So crazy that it's been literally half my life that this dude has demolished the Sox.

I didn't think there was a chance they'd actually get swept by the Twins. Oh well. Onto 2019. At least Moncada has upped his average and OBP over the last few weeks.
I watched the final game for David Wright earlier today (thanks, MLB TV!). Brought a tear to my eye seeing him catch the first pitch from his daughter - i know that was a huge aspect of this return, so his two daughters could see him play. Dude is a class act.

Tomorrow will be fun. I'll be cheering on the Brewers and Rockies.

I feel like the most likely outcome is that whoever loses the Cubs-Brewers game wins the WC game, and then wins the Cubs-Brewers NLDS the next round.
Because baseball.

I now have a Sam Mayday Malone jersey, and I could not be happier with China, because royalties and licensing fees ruin everything.

That was pretty frustrating. Good at-bats in the 9th, but really not a whole lot else.

Brewers bullpen is nasty, I'm confident the Cubs will win the wild card game though.

Brewers are definitely an argument for teams to be more aggressive in the offseason. Signing Cain and trading for Yelich were so damn significant.

i went to david wright's last game on saturday. it was bittersweet - nice to see him in a game again, but sad under the circumstances. lots of great moments, though. him running out on the field alone made that stadium roar. him being taken out was sort of difficult to watch. of course, it turned into a typical 2018 mets game of anemic offense.
the guy in front of me's wife was sexting him and finally just wrote "come home." and he kept writing back "stay up." he finally left in the 11th or 12th.

Yeah that sounds about right for a Mets game.
