I'm glad he was at least able to land a guaranteed major league deal. Reports a couple weeks ago suggested he had only received minor league offers to this point.

lots of bad takes in this thread today. pale hose loving that "scott boras" aka the players got their asses kicked this offseason? scoots thinking the baseball writers are unfairly reporting exaggerations (i guess?) to benefit owners? yeesh. glad jake got a good contract, he deserves as much as he can get. Again, I'm all for the players getting all they can, Boras clients included. I think Boras sucks and did a shitty job for his clients, that is all.He got an 8 year contract for Eric Hosmer and got JD Martinez a 110 mil, a 30 year old DH who has played more than 125 games in a season one time, a 5/110 deal.

Those were both great deals for the respective clients, but they represent the exception. He left money on the table for the vast majority of his clients this off-season.

Neil Walker to Yankees for $5m That's wild Damn. Good deal for them. He's good for 2.5 WAR at least, and he was getting a non-roster invite from the Royals. Bonkers.

Bonkers. I remember thinking that the Todd Frazier Mets deal was bargain basement - and this is just a fraction of that. Great swing for that stadium too.

I am starting to run out of sports I care enough about to watch.

did they not do focus groups on this? i know MiLB likes to test out new rules before they're implemented in MLB, but nobody likes this.

Like, I can just barely see the argument of preventing unnecessary injury to systems meant to promote talent, and minor league players already making little enough before adding in unpaid overtime wear and tire, but they have to know how awful this comes across.

I am starting to run out of sports I care enough about to watch. You cared about watching MiLB? (a) yes, I like to follow prospects and (b) this is just a test run to determine if they want to ruin the majors too.

Given baseball's glacial pace of change, I feel like you have a good 50 years before you realistically have to worry about something like that being implemented in the majors

I don't have any issue with them testing this out. It would be dumb in playoff games, but think of how many pointless regular season extra inning games there are.
I only draw the line at the pitch clock or any clock. This rule though - eh

This rule though - eh they've been doing the pitch clock in the minors for a few years now. that's definitely getting into MLB one way or another.

They did the pitch clock in the Arizona Fall League and it's super distracting. I really hated watching it. I get the logic on why it would make sense I'm just not convinced that they'll actually go through with it.

Astros and Jose Altuve are close on a 5/151 extension.
Obviously this is a very generous (and deserved) contract. But it's interesting to note this represents a major shift in philosophy for Scott Boras, who almost always encourages his guys to get to free agency (I know there are exceptions like Strasburg). I can't help but think this off-season may have played a role in the decision to get a deal done now rather than wait.

I think there are vultures probably swarming the Boras clients so there also might have been incentive to take a W now rather than risk Altuve getting different representation in 2 years.

Orioles are close with Alex Cobb, they have supposedly been discussing at 3 year deal in the $50M range.

Oh wow, Jon Heyman is reporting it's actually a 4 year deal worth close to $60M. I wonder if there was a last minute bidding war? Good for him.

Same team bid against themselves for Chris Davis last season so I'm going to chalk it up to the Orioles just being the Orioles.
