Makes sense, Boras will spin it as a win since they beat Darvish's AAV.

Dude’s velocity has declined significantly, so arguably that large of a contract is a win.

And being on the side of the owners when it comes to player contracts is a weird position.

I mean it's kind of a win-win for both sides on that one, isn't it? Jake gets the money he wanted, Phillies have a top of the line arm for 3 years to complement Nola. They should be competitive. Boras still lost this year and everyone knows it so, you know, whatever.
Honestly I wish Cubs would've signed him back for that but that's just because I will miss him :-(

I'm not on the side of the owners at all. I think these players should get every single penny they can.
It's certainly been a weird off-season, and a lot of agents have had a tough time gauging the market. With that said, I don't think any agent has cost his players more money this off-season than Boras. I know he had a long history of getting his guys top dollar, but in recent years that has not been the case. At what point are some of these guys going to realize that his approach to free agency is dated? I'm surprised no one has dropped him yet, but I imagine it's only a matter of time.

So are any of the big names still left on the market? I can't seem to think of anyone

I guess I made up that he signed with the Rockies Wade Davis took the deal he turned down, 3/52. Another Boras misstep.

Any favorites? I've seen thinkpieces saying Brewers, Twins or Baltimore on google I've got to imagine the Twins rotation is set now that they signed Lance Lynn. Milwaukee and Baltimore seem like the best bets.

Fwiw, the requests Boras was making were in line with projections. It's not like he was going above and beyond what we've seen from previous FA years. This was a weird offseason made more challenging for free agents by the amount of teams either not competing or comfortably competitive. I get that there's a lot of Boras hate out there, but putting the blame on him for the market conditions this year is dismissing a ton of other variables.

Boras is not to blame for the slow off-season, I acknowledged that. However, with the exception of Martinez and Hosmer, Boras left money on the table for every single one of his clients this off-season. That's unacceptable IMO.

Even if it's for a high AAV he's gonna end up with way less money than the Cubs had offered. The 4/110 that the Cubs reportedly offered wasn't solidly confirmed, and it was only after they basically agreed to a deal with Darvish. So I could see why Arrieta would want to leave if the Cubs a.) refused to give him a long term extension during the year and b.) basically gave him like 4 hours to accept a deal after clearly preferring Darvish the whole way.

I was going to say, we're blindly trusting a ton of media reports of these offers from folks who are pretty clearly in the pocket of the owners.

Baseball writers are in the pockets of the owners? That's news to me.

Cute. Well you seem to be very trusting of these sources, so it was worthy of a reminder.

The injury bug is really biting the White Sox hard this spring. Saladino and Delmonico collided in today's game, Saladino is being treated for a concussion and Delmonico has a partially dislocated shoulder.

I feel really bad for Saladino. He's looked great so far. Hope he can come back and get back to where he was a couple years ago.

Sad to see Arrieta go, but I'm glad he's out of the Central if he must.

I think Cobb is arguably more of a threat at this point than Arrieta, and he'll probably end up in the NL Central.

lots of bad takes in this thread today. pale hose loving that "scott boras" aka the players got their asses kicked this offseason? scoots thinking the baseball writers are unfairly reporting exaggerations (i guess?) to benefit owners? yeesh.
glad jake got a good contract, he deserves as much as he can get.

It did feel super gross to hear the Minnesota GM boasting about getting all of these bargains in this market. I get it, and it's not untrue - it just doesn't feel right to be talking about distressed assets when it's guys' livelihood.
I'm all for the free market - but ugh.

Again, I'm all for the players getting all they can, Boras clients included. I think Boras sucks and did a shitty job for his clients, that is all.

I mean what palehouse is saying has some truth to it. If it was best for every player to test the market they would do it. Players with other agencies accept extensions or qualifying offers so clearly that’s his influence on the players he represents. Not every market is the same. The needs and money aren’t always there. I’m not saying boras or other players could have seen this coming but i do think his philosophy caught up to him this year.
