It was tough not buying right away but I'm definitely going to make this work somehow. I was already willing to travel for Metallica this year as it is, this just makes it easier...

feeling very vindicated re: our previous janelle monae festival billing placement discussion after seeing where she wound up on acl and afropunk. You sure showed us, having faith in a female artist. did you really lose your faith in janelle monae due to her billing at acl festival? that is sad.

It's a good lineup that might look better than it is because of the lack of obvious eyesores up top. true it was smart to put the bad headliners along the side. imagine how much better bonnaroo would have looked to everyone had they done that. fwiw

was in a meeting earlier but now doing another survey of Wk1 acts...damn.
Paul McCartney Metallica Arctic Monkeys The National Camila Cabello David Byrne Chvrches Deftones Justice St. Vincent Father John Misty Brandi Carlile Rezz Janelle Monae Greta Van Fleet Highly Suspect Manchester Orchestra Blood Orange Jungle Twin Shadow The Breeders Sharon van Etten The Revolution Parquet Courts Sir Sly Bishop Briggs Japanese Breakfast Bahamas Big Thief Gang of Youths Amen Dunes Natalie Prass
32 acts is pretty great for 1 day less and $100 cheaper than lolla

That's pretty much where we are at with Lolla vs. ACL. Pretty similar quality lineups but one is 3 days and the other is 4.
I'd much prefer the 3 for $100 less.
It is annoying that there are just like certain bands Live Nation isn't booking anymore. Like St. Vincent, Father John Misty and Sylvan Esso are great and all but what about The Decemberists or TV on the Radio or Phoenix?

I'm hoping for a little crossover with Voodoo Fest. Of course, the top line would be awesome, but I'd be happy with David Byrne, Father John Misty, Deftones, Brandi Carlisle, and Janelle Monae.

I honestly can't remember how it sold last year but years before that yes.
Also random anecdote I've seen more ads for this year's festival than ever before. Multiple billboards around town (and this is in Houston, not Austin), pretty constant radio ads, and even saw a TV ad for it the other day. I thought that was interesting, I can't ever remember seeing/hearing ads like that around Houston for it

There have been billboards on I-10 and I-45 just north of downtown the last couple years.

100% a reaction to Metallica fans bitching that Deftones are only playing on Weekend 1 and even if it wasn't meant as a troll move it totally reads like one and i love it edit: THEY ARE BILLED 3 SPOTS LOWER THAN DEFTONES. BENEATH JUSTICE, ST VINCENT, AND SYLVAN ESSO. I'M HOWLING

deftones have some talent, disturbed have none. and I realize disturbed are local.
edit: deftones at the vic, late fall, 1995 opening for life of agony and anthrax; 2011 at one of the two big outdoor stages,, lollachile.

While I'm not a fan of Disturbed, David Draiman is still a very talented vocalist. I would pay to watch them do the set I suggested earlier.

I would pay to watch them do the set I suggested earlier. i loved them back in the day and can still jam out to Believe, im sure, but there's a massive chasm in 2018 between what Deftones have done in the post-nu metal years and Disturbed's attempt to revive it and then give up and try to stay relevant with one melancholy cover when melancholy covers were already at their point of oversaturation in the current music scene. Draiman honestly couldve pulled an Aaron Lewis and gone solo (in whatever genre fits his range i guess) and probably been better off at this point. i dont think they even sold out the riv last time and their "headlining" set at open air had less people than the bands that we're on before them -- Korn and Breaking Benjamin, i think. but also yes i would totally watch them do all covers of S&G

Draiman actually did form another industrial nu metal band a few years back and the music was very 1999 WWF PPV theme-esque. Predictably the album was a lot of goofy fun and I listened to it like 50 times.
I am really struggling to understand why Disturbed has prominent billing at a mainstream music festival in 2018 but I feel thankful

(I definitely did).

I get Disturbed songs confused with Korn songs and I can't say I've ever felt the need to clarify this

I can't believe people think the festival bubble has burst when we are just scratching the surface on breakthough subheadliners like Disturbed and Michael McDonald.
I thought Loufest dropped the hammer when they busted out Big Mac but ACL holdmybeer'd them in breathtaking fashion
