I have a friend who will talk about his favorite athlete in very ambiguous sports terms for upwards of 10-15 minutes before explaining that it's been Joey Chestnut the whole time.

Just got back from my week long trip home and really want to move back. Since I left about three years ago all my friends have moved downtown. Meanwhile I've lived in three different cities during that time and four apartments in the past year alone.
I knew what I was signing up for when I did a rotational program but I thought I'd be able to handle it better. I haven't gotten out pretty much at all since I moved to Charlotte two months ago, partially because of trying to lose weight but also because moving to a new city and trying to make friends and putting yourself out there time after time is fucking exhausting.
All I wanted since I was a teenager was to live in a city I love with people I enjoy. Right now I have none of that but if I moved back home I could easily. Only issues are
1. Reflects poorly on my resume leaving a company in less than two years 2. Have to pay back relocation for move from detroit to Nashville and then Nashville to charlotte which would be over $20,000 since I signed something that said I would if I leave the company within two years of a move which don't have lying around but I've heard they don't really enforce that. Talking to our old director of comp tomorrow who I was close with but left the company 3. Paying to break my apartment lease. 4. I will most likely be taking quite a big pay cut but it'snot like I won'tmake livable wages.
Still really want to do this as long as I can get by #2. I'm 24 but I feel like I'm living the life of a 44 year old. And this is how it's going to be for the next few years, not sure how I can ever really feel settled or create meaningful relationships. Like the biggest reasons not to are a career and $$$ but what does that matter if you're alone.
Sorry for the long post, but a lot of my friends can't really relate to this and I'm sure there are people here who can. #quarterlifecrisis

i can't fully relate because i am a few years younger than you but
i'm dirt poor, working two jobs and finishing school, busting ass - but it's the happiest i have ever been!! i think if this is a situation where you aren't happy then absolutely nothing else matters - you're young, go live dangerously in a city and have fun fuck all that other shit!!!

Hope it all goes well for you neader! Look out for yourself, don’t destroy your professional future or throw yourself into financial disrepair, but also be happy. That’s really important. I’m glad your week home had such an impact on you, and I hope it all works out the best for you.

So a long time ago (2015) I left my long term girlfriend of 5 years and moved to KC. I had a few friends but we didn't hang out much. So I do get where you're coming from and it definitely sucks. You go from being that person surrounded by friends to being completely isolated and alone. I suffered from some mild depression during this time.
A few things that did help:
- I know it's hard but putting yourself out there is good. I got involved with the community to try and improve my spirits. You meet people that way and usually good people. It also gets you out of the house and doing something positive. It'll make you feel better and you lay a foundation.
- don't forget, stelles is in that area. He's weird but a fun guy. We saw Deerhunter while I was there in January 2016 and all of his friends joined and we had a blast. Good people. My parents live in Hickory, the wife and I will be there in December, maybe we can get a beer or see a show? I know it's a ways off but it's something.
- meetup.com sounds cheesy but I found some fun things to do that put me with like minded folks. Some weird ones too. I joined a writers club briefly but so many of then wanted to write YA fiction and all of them were men and 40. But I did attend some singles mingle things and met a few people.
- it took awhile, but eventually I started to appreciate being alone. It's tough and not what you want to hear. But there are benefits. But I do understand after awhile you wanna just get out there and be around people.
- dating website. Even if you aren't wanting to get into anything serious, you can meet people who just want to be friends. Before I met Lauren, I went on a dozen dates via Match.com. 3 of those ended up as cool friends. It's not always about putting the thingy in the other thingy, sometimes it's just about connecting with like minded folks.
- do you have work friends? I attended after work events. They weren't my favorite people, but they provided company which was nice.
- not a strong suggestion, but it helped me and I don't know if it's doable in your situation but I picked up a second job at a sub shop. Few nights a week and I got to listen to my music. Boss was intimidated by my age (he was younger than me) so he never got onto me about anything.
Dunno if that's helpful at all. Just speaking from experience. I've been in that place. But to get out of it, ya gotta step outside of your comfort zone a tiny bit. Community stuff will present you in a positive light and people will respond to that. If you need anything we're all here for you.

Neader, I don't know how to tell you this but, the first step is to take out the biggest loan you can. Second step, buy a home an hour from where you are now.

neader how much longer until you hit 2 years and can be exempt from that part of the agreement? it feels like you're well versed enough in moving at this point that you could pull it off well enough if that $20k thing wasn't over your head (obviously very understandably so)

I am forever on team work hard and make sacrifices in your 20s so you can do more of the things you want later in life but I did not follow those tenets in my actual life so I get it.

I think neader should really reconsider changing his career, mainly so that he won't have to give up another giant patch of hair to get another gig

re: tim
i've done meetup and dating apps and haven't found them to be too successful in terms of long-term friendships. goes back to it being exhausting. i mean ultimately that's on me but yeah. can't really hangout with work friends since no one wants to hangout with hr, and i'm literally the only person on the salary side who works here under 30, plus it's rural NC, not exactly the type of people I'd spend time with on my free time.
re:alady the 20k wasn't given to me as a fat check but includes the cost of movers and breaking my leasees and such
re: wretched, for nashville it'll be next march, for charlotte the april after that.
also am currently overlooking the 54 resumes of people who applied to my current position out of curiosity and they like all have 10+ years of experience which is making me have second thoughts on leaving.

Nearer how many more months until you hit 2 years ?

March 2019 for my Nashville move and April 2020 for Charlotte.
But that doesn't mean they won't move me again before April 2020. In fact, I was explicitly told I will be in Charlotte two years at the most.

I would assume. Like I said in my og post I'm talking to our old director of comp who handled this stuff about it. I do honestly think that our company doesn't care enough to go after people for this. It's kinda crazy that they could fire you and then demand you pay them back that much $$$
edit: yeah it definitely applies to both since I signed one for each move.

That's insane, so if they move you every 18 months you're just constantly starting this cycle over and over again?

Maybe you can just figure out a way to get yourself fired that doesn't fall under the "misconduct" umbrella.
