the cubs would have to deal russell, schwarber and at least two top prospects to get machado. for real. Yup. And that's too much for a guy whose just gonna sign with the Yankees next year anyway

haha.
not sure the yankees will go for him, particularly if gleybar and/or andujar shine this year. that said, far more likely they go for machado than harper.

I'm starting to buy into the "Harper wants to play with Bryant" rumors despite my better judgement. That being said, Schawrber and someone else (probably Zobrist since Heyward's contract is ridiculous) will have to go in the next year if that's the case

I'm glad I don't have to worry about buying into those because I don't like Harper.

Can't wait for the White Sox to over perform this season and make a run at Harper.
A guy can dream.

more excited about yankees potentially trading clint frazier plus for fulmer or cole. I love Clint Frazier and it would be cool if the Yankees had an outfield of the three strongest men alive. That being said, Frazier for Cole would be awesome.

Is that something the Mariners get in on? Or Giants?

I dont get why MLB continues to allow ownership groups to run the Marlins that way. Not good for baseball.
Happy to see the hot stove heat up quite a bit today though, there have been a number of free agent signings as well. I can't believe how much some of these relievers are getting, so much for the GMs getting bargains by waiting.

Playoffs the last few years have proven that the bullpen is the most important part. Gotta buy for that much when the demand is that high.
As for the fish, Deadspin had an article that basically echoed what you're saying. The fact that MLB let an ownership group take on 400 million in debt, knowing they didn't have the money for the team, is really irresponsible on a number of levels. Huge baseball community in Flordia getting screwed by bad teams (the Rays at least appear semi-competent).
Who would've thought Jeter would be more despised than A-Rod at this point

MLB never should have sold to that group if they had no way to pay down the $400 million in debt that Loria saddled them with. Loria had already been threatening to crash and burn the franchise, but this isn't any better.
The way they tried to intimidate Stanton into accepting their terms to a trade shows how inexperienced and unqualified this ownership team is.

White Sox evidently have the best offer on the table for Machado. Either Giolito or Kopech.

There's been some speculation that Hahn might try to flip him to the Yankees, but I'd assume Angelos would include some sort of clause to prevent that if he's really dead set on keeping Machado off the Yankees?
Hopefully there's a negotiating window if this does somehow get done.
*quickly looks to see if Machado is represented by Scott Boras*
Phew!

I would rather they just wait a year and try to sign him as a FA.

There's a better chance of getting him now if they have an exclusive negotiating window rather than going up against 10 other teams head to head.

I'm struggling to understand the rush to trade for him. The Sox would be trading years of control of their young prospects for 1 year of Machado in a year they are still "rebuilding". Even if they extend him, it is not like the Sox will get a discount. The man is going to get paid either way. Why not hold on to the prospects, go after him in free agency and if you miss out spend the money elsewhere. It's not like Machado is the leader they must have either. The dudes been a hot head.

They could give him a massive frontloaded contract with an opt out after 3 years and a no-trade clause, where he could make something like 120 mil in the first 3 years.

They do get the chance to negotiate with him. If they do extend him it will still be for a boatload of money which they would pay him in free agency as well. They don't have to bid against other teams - sure - but they're also giving up an elite prospect(s) to do so. Control of young talent is worth so much more than the opportunity to negotiate an extension.

I agree, Machado is not going to give the Sox any sort of discount. Why pay prospects in addition to dollars? Better to be patient, we're gonna suck this year no matter what anyway.

I don't think they're making this deal based on the idea they'd get a discount. They make this deal so Machado doesn't have to make a direct comparison between a 65 win White Sox team and a 90 plus win Yankees team offering him the same money.
