Yesterday I did a mini-marathon of Nic Cage movies. I might keep the same idea up for some themed movie days while I’m still furloughed. Anyway,
Con Air was marvelous even though it dragged in the middle. Can’t believe I didn’t see this movie when I was like 15 when it would’ve blown my fuckin mind. It was still a perfect slice of ‘90s action and Malkovich rules.
Continued with Bangkok Dangerous which was not very good, but still somehow very easy to watch. I have read that Cage himself enjoys this movie a lot but I can’t figure out why.
I was disappointed to not enjoy Bringing Out the Dead as much as I’d hoped to. I’ll always watch a John Goodman performance so that helped. But I just couldn’t get into a groove with this one and wasn’t really saved by Cage.

Friedkin Rankings: Tier 1 1. Excorcist 2. To Live and Die In LA 3. Sorcerer 4. Cruising 5. The French Connection 6. Blue Chips - B+ basketball movie A+ Shaq performance 7. The Boys in the Band
Tier 2 8. The Night They Raided Minsky's 9. The Guardian - This was very dumb and clearly a Sam Raimi rip off but also there is a sacrificial tree baby tree that bleeds when u stab it and that's cool. 10. The Birthday Party 11. Rampage - The first 45 minutes of this were among the most tense portrays of serial killers in its normality (reminded me a bit of the most recent LVT) and the last 45 was a boring episode of Law and Order 12. The Brink's Job
Tier 3 13. Deal of The Century
Tier 4 14. Good Times

I always assumed theatres wouldn't making it mandatory since they are still selling concessions. I'm probably gonna cancel A-list regardless since all of the AMC theatre's are downtown and I don't think I'll be taking public transit anytime soon.

Godard is an absolute madman for this one. Did not feel like 4.5 hours though I did watch it over two nights ![](https://images-na.ssl-images-amazon.com/images/I/71tLAT-8l0L._SY445_.jpg)

The Way Way Back - Sam Rockwell is still the best part of this. Didn't realize this was done by the same guys who won the Adapted Screenplay Oscar for The Descendants.
Walk Hard - Still pretty damn funny, and lots of star cameos ("is that...?").

I still think about the scene in the hospital way too often... ‘We need more and less blankets’ and then John C Reilly’s delivery of, ‘This hospital and its many blankets have saved me,’ is so good.

friday season finale of Joe Bob was Hellraiser II (still fucking rules so hard. it's not as scary as the first one but the world building and designs are 10x crazier) and Hell Comes to Frogtown (in which Roddy Piper's dick is placed under government control in order to inseminate women displaced throughout a kingdom of tyrannical toad people. it's exactly what you'd expect and yet nothing like what you'd expect.)
saturday we watched Atlantis: The Lost Empire for the first time in 20 years and umm holy shit movie is crazy good? it's such a shame a lot of those Disney movies got forgotten in the time span between hand drawn animation and computer animation cause a lot of them are still great. Emperor's New Groove, Atlantis, Road to El Dorado, etc. and then i introduced Eric to House (the Japanese one from 1977.) god that movie only gets better with age. i don't think i've ever seen Eric laugh and scream simultaneously before. really good fun.
last night we watched the new Gretel and Hansel. absolutely gorgeous film with a creepy atmospheric vibe but honestly virtually no story at all and really difficult to pay attention to after about 30 or 40 minutes of the same stuff. shame, cause the actors were all great but clearly had nothing to work with. and then Eric sat me down and finally made me watch Southland Tales and hooooooooo boy is that a film. still collecting my thoughts on it but my gut reaction is that i'm on team #buriedgem more than team #worstmovieever, but i can definitely understand the arguments against it. i was into the batshit decisions it made tho.

I think I'm on the 'buried gem' team for Southland Tales as well, towards the end I was laughing at all the absurdity.

I also hit 100 recently, but with 34 rewatches. letterboxd.com/mattgignac/list/quarantine-film-rankings/Yesterday, I checked out The Stuff on the arrow video channel - great shit. I was hooked from the opening shot. Then we got about halfway through Presumed Innocent on HBO before falling asleep. This morning I opened the first of two Vinegar Syndrome titles i ordered, and watched Ice Cream Man for the first time since college. Who decided Clint Howard should talk like he does in the movie? Contemplating a Parker Posey marathon in the very near future, consisting of: Waiting for Guffman, Clockwatchers, Columbus, and Best in Show.

The Stuff! I haven't seen that movie in over 25 years, but I loved it as a kid.
Growing up the local video store by me would only prevent kids from renting R movies for sex, and not for violence - and anything that wasn't a new release was 25 cents to rent. Needless to say I've seen just about every main stream horror movie that was released in the 80s.

Party Girl, House of Yes, Broken English, and Clockwatchers sounds like a much better marathon after researching these suggestions. I imagine Best in Show will still factor in as well.

![](https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/7/7f/Wait_Until_Dark_1967.jpg) first time watching Raising Arizona in full in one sitting. it was fine. Wait Until Dark was not bad. pretty good acting against type for arkin and hepburn, from what else i know of them.
