idk if it was a weak year, but 20 feet from stardom was critically beloved and also a box office success when it came out. i seem to remember it being the frontrunner and not a surprise win.

I saw 3 of the 5 nominees that year but not that one. That was the same year as The Act of Killing which seems like a no brainer

friday we watched Child's Play 2 and 3 (have never seen any of them until recently. Eric showed me the original last weekend so now i fear the next few weeks will be dedicated to finishing the whole series.) both perfectly good stupid fun mostly because Dourif.
saturday we watched Kung Fu Hustle for the first time in a long time and it's still so damn good.
trying to sit Eric down and finally make him watch Enemy before it's taken off Netflix next month.
also i guess that new horror movie Relic is gonna get dropped on VOD next month so that'll become a priority pretty quickly!

Watched a few movies this weekend and they were all at least interesting.
Wavelength is wild and I don’t necessarily “get it” but it’s definitely something I’ll be thinking on for a while.
Chimes at Midnight is pretty cool, I’m not a huge fan of films set in that era but an insanely beefy Orson Welles was more than enough to make up for that. King of gathering mass.
Imitation of Life is not a happy movie by any means but it’s probably more relevant than a good majority of other films right now. Just absurdly ahead of it’s time and totally destroys the idea that white savior movies are just a product of their time. Really loved this one and I’ll be thinking about it for a while.
A Matter of Life and Death takes two genres I don’t love, war movies and fantasy, and turns them into a delightful and gorgeous mix that is absolutely perfect. Fantastic stuff.

The Red Shoes is probably my favorite of the Powell/Pressburger films I’ve watched in the past couple weeks but it’s an extremely close second

The Eric Andre special was great, pretty much the same thing that I saw at the chicago theater last year but it was fun to re-live it a bit

I watched parts of some movies recently.
Porno - not actual porn...but kinda close. I think this is by the same folks who worked on Mandy bc aesthetically it was very similar. It was good, for what I saw of it and maybe some day I'll finish it.
Kurt Cobain: Montage of Heck - this is in HBO Max whd I'd always heard good things. The most interesting aspects were the unseen tapes of him bone thin. He looks like he has AIDS, honestly, but its obviously the heroin. But damn. Haunting stuff. A lot of fun interviews and I dug the early live footage. Alas, my attention was often diverted but what I did see was good.
Hudson Hawke - so little known fact, the first movie I can remember seeing as a child is Die Hard. My mom wasn't too restrictive of a parent on what I watched, and so by the time I started first grade I thought NYC Cops jumped off of exploding buildings (as opposed to now, where I just want cops to jump off buildings). Anyways I saw a trailer for HH and correlated it to Bruce Willis being my hero and blah blah so my mom rented it. Being a wee lad I naturally fell asleep at the beginning and never got around to watching it bc my mom said it was really stupid. 19 years later and I can confirm that my mom was right about at least one thing she told me as a child.
Becky - the best part is seeing violence performed on Kevin James, I'm assuming as payback for Paul Blart.
Edit: I also watched Da 5 Bloods over the span of a week. It was pretty wild. Managed to finish that one too. Delroy Lindo is crazy AF.

Caught up on some Affleck the last couple weeks.
Never heard of 200 Cigarettes but it is a very fun 90's movie with a huge ensemble cast including every actor who has ever lived. Basically a less charming Can't Hardly Wait. Paul Rudd, Courtney Love, Kate Hudson, Dave Chappelle, Kate Hudson, Jay Mohr, Christina Ricci, Janeane Garofolo, Ben Affleck, Casey Affleck, and Elvis Costello. Had to illegally stream it since it doesn't exist otherwise. Definitely worth breaking the law to see this.
Reindeer Games was such a colossal pile of shit. I remember liking it when I was 12 and I was excited to rewatch it but holy shit it is bad. The entire movie is an excuse to tell Christmas puns for 100 minutes. I read that Charlize Theron knew it was awful when she accepted the role and that she only took it because she wanted to work with John Frankenheimer. I assume that's what the rest of the cast did too since there is real talent here (Theron, Affleck, Gary Sinise, Donal Logue, etc). The movie could have been genuinely super fun and good if it just leaned into the campiness but it took itself so seriously even though everything happening on screen was inexplicable and outrageous.
Boiler Room still holds up even though it's weird watching it after just seeing Wolf of Wall Street again. Still super rewatchable since Ribisi is excellent, but the movie doesn't really know what to do when it dips its toes into interesting waters regarding race, class, religion, etc. Affleck only gets a couple scenes and does his best Alec Baldwin impersonation but it works. Nia Long should have had 50 more minutes on screen. I think people who incorrectly disliked Wolf of Wall Street for glorifying that lifestyle would probably enjoy this more.
Joseph: King of Dreams is a 70 minute straight to DVD animated musical about Joseph and his amazing technicolor dreamcoat, but it is NOT Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat. Did this need to get made? Of course not! Does it glorify slavery? You bet! Is Affleck a good voice actor? Not particularly! The animation is actually super cool at times since his dream sequences are basically Van Gogh come to life, but that's about it. If this movie was 20 minutes longer I probably would have quit the Affleck Project.
Affleck Rankings 1.) Good Will Hunting 2.) Dazed and Confused 3.) Shakespeare in Love 4.) The Way Back 5.) School Ties 6.) Dogma 7.) Boiler Room 8.) Mallrats 9.) Chasing Amy 10.) Going All the Way 11.) Bounce 12.) Armageddon 13.) 200 Cigarettes 14.) Phantoms 15.) Forces of Nature 16.) Reindeer Games 17.) Joseph: King of Dreams 18.) Glory Daze

Apparently the original ending had one of the ripped off clients storm their office with guns to get revenge, but they scrapped it and just ended it early.

This may come as shock to some, but time has not been kind to Jaws 3-D.

![](https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/1/1d/The_Wrecking_Crew_%282008%29_Poster.jpg) Vast of Night is pretty enjoyable as homage to, like, the twilight zone, super 8, and close encounters of the third kind. the first 10 minutes or so don't have the same vibe as the rest of the movie, though. i thought that was a weird choice. Wrecking Crew is just a bunch of session players reminiscing about getting in on the ground floor of rock music studio work. a huge yawn.
