This comes out officially tonight, and while I don't do an AOTW post anymore, I did want to shout out this one. Its already become quite divisive because of how minimal it is compared to their 2010s output. It's more stripped down, and my review of it points out how it veers into the FLips own definition of "Americana." Now, I haven't listened to the Terror in some time, but I feel like American Head is the best work they've done since Embryonic. Everything clicks for me on this one, and it's been awhile since I truly adored a Flaming Lips record. The assists from Kacey Musgraves are solid, though one is clearly better than the other ("God and the Policeman"). Some may have felt the lead up singles were too "traditional" sounding, and thats what a lot of the criticism is. But after a decade of bizarre projects and detours, it's kinda nice to have a straight forward record from them. In addition to that, the new Doves record is also very good and worth your time.

I've been reading British comedian James Acaster's book Perfect Sound Whatever, which is half a memoir about his life falling apart in 2017, and half a series of album write-ups confirming his hypothesis that 2016 was the best year for music ever. Finding a ton of great records through this (Xenia Rubinos, Rocks and Waves Song Circle, Johnnie Frierson, Yohuna, Market), but this one (Laura Mvula - The Dreaming Room) has been my favorite discovery. Any fans here? Hard to describe her style w/o being a bit reductive, so I'll just recommend checking out the track "Let Me Fall" if anyone's interested.

It's kinda fallen off after the first 3-4 songs but those 3-4 songs are some of the best hip-hops I've heard this year

This is absolutely terrific. Might be the best album of the second half of 2020 so far (IMO either this, Courtney Marie Andrews, or Advertisement)

I listened to this yesterday and thought it was fine but the EPs he put out earlier this year are much much better, especially the one with The Alchemist. I will leave it to other, better hip-hop knowers around here to make some Alchemist recs

Flaming lips take. Why are drugs named on every single song? Also, why are most of these songs good in album format?

Been a little obsessed with this one this week. Time to go through the Malkmus/Jicks catalogue in earnest - I've only heard Real Emotional Trash and his three most recent LPs before.

Angie McMahon: Salt - Definitely wins "best Spotify bio" for today, "yells words into microphone." Kinda reminds me of a stripped down Angel Olsen or Sharon Van Etten. I finally got around to this album in my backlog next to GBV discog. Awesome songwriting in this one. Looking forward to future releases from her.
