Some new records I really liked today. Bill Callahan is, of course, great. Didn't strike me as hard as his last, but his records always grow on me with repeated listens. Mike Polizze (of Purling Hiss) delivered one of the year's best folk releases here, by my ear. I guess Kurt Vile collabed on a number of these tracks too? Good stuff - extremely Aquarium Drunkard-core. And finally Gum Country, a Canadian band, who I saw recommended somewhere (maybe by someone here? I don't remember exactly), but this is totally Board Friendly. They almost sound like a jangle pop band thrown through a light shoegaze filter (think more loud YLT than MBV). I really dig it. I also listened to that Flaming Lips record, but thought it was just alright. I was p. distracted during it tho, so I'll give it another chance soon.

Gum Country is a Courtneys side project.

This has slowly crept into my top 10 Lianne La Havas if you aren't familiar. Very soulful and she has a great Radiohead cover in the middle.

Finally listened to Whole New Mess.
I loved All Mirrors last year but there are definitely multiple tracks that benefit from the stripped down production. Really great collection of songs.

the new Deftones is going to be in my top ten of the year. That's all I'll say for now.

This is significantly better than Crack-Up and I enjoyed that one a decent amount. Can I Believe You, A Long Way Past the Past, and It's Not My Season all stand with the best FF songs, imo

Looking forward to checking it out tonight. 55 minutes is a lot to ask of a listener during the work day

Its apparently chocked full of guests too. Kevin Morby's on it, Chris Bear and Daniel Rossen of Grizzly Bear, Hamilton Leithauser, and several that I'm unfamiliar with. I tried to listen while making breakfast but too many distractions.

I listened to this yesterday and I think it's interesting that Joey basically made an album about 2020 issues in 2017 and nobody cared then. Yes it's not as good as 1999 but still.

This really hit the spot today. P4K kinda shit on Aaron Dessner's production, but I dig it (Hannah Georgas - All That Emotion)

Another really good album from Widowspeak. I still think they have the untapped ability to make an absolute powerhouse album but kinda cool that they are unable to make anything bad.

Potentially a top 5 FF song for me after one listen.

I think I've heard this one like 5 times in the last two days? Still digesting parts of it, particularly the tracks on the last 1/3 of it, but I really love this record. Feels very spiritual like Kevin Morby's last record - like a prayer for everyone trying to survive this hellish world, and a eulogy for those we've lost.

I don't think it's my favorite Sufjan album but it is pretty damn good and I'm gonna need to listen to it like 50 more times.

Not really feeling this new Sufjan record after 1.5 listens? It's good, in that I appreciate the beauty of its composition and there are parts that absolutely jump off the page as immediate highlights (Tell Me You Love Me, Goodbye To All That, Lamentations), but too much of the album was repetitively downtempo that it made the whole thing seem like a chore to want to revisit in full after one listen. Will these songs reveal more to me on more listens? Will I end up liking this more a month from now than today? Almost assuredly. But right now I'd definitely slot it below pretty much everything he's done since Enjoy Your Rabbit? ( Aporia excluded) ... sorry, Suf.

Agreed on Sufjan unfortunately. I describe it as being stuck in the same gear for over an hour. I don't hate it, but it's definitely repetitive.
New Idles is pretty much what I expected, although I don't think I like it as much as the last one.
Not enough time today to get to Deftones or Bob Mould unfortunately.

I feel like they have fully embraced Sergio at this point. Hearing a lot more grooviness. Killin it on bass. The drums and arrangement on Error... might be my fave so far.
