Started the Lucy album, but wasn't in the right headspace for it Just finished my first listen, and ooohhhh man this was great. Lucy is my favorite of the Boygenius crew and this is def my favorite of their recent solo releases. Not sure how it stacks up with Historian (my 2018 AOTY), but it's right up there. Lots has already been said about the intensely personal songwriting here, but I want to highlight the excellent album sequencing. Hot & Heavy as a punchy opener, the heavy singles (VBS, Thumbs) spread throughout the album. Going Going Gone struck me as a closer at first, but Triple Dog Dare's closing catharsis was perfect for that placement. Lots of good stuff here!

I am so far behind in new releases, but I was finally able to start April albums today and I dig both of these quite a bit:

Listening to this new record by Djinn now, and this song is probably the best jazz track I’ve heard all year. Spellbinding. Reiterating that this is one of the best albums of the year, and now I'll confidently call it my favorite jazz release of 2021

I listened to To Pimp A Butterfly and DAMN. today for the first time in a while. It kind of shocked me how much I don't really enjoy DAMN. (give or take a couple amazing songs) compared to TPAB.

Yesterday and today's Phish listens, brought to you by MonasteryMonochrome! 10/31/94, Glen Falls, Glen Falls Civic Center- LivePhish Vol. 13 - This was the White Album Halloween show; first set is a killer tho, and def the highlight of the night. Sparkle goes haywire at end segues perfectly into Simple; Harpua was fun (and, reading about on Phish.net is consistently weird as fuck), plus they tossed some War Pigs in there. I also loved the gorgeous Horse > Silent. Golgi came next as a beautiful, tight 5-minute set closer. White Album was impressively performed, but without much jams / arrangement variations. Best moments were Rocky Raccoon and the bluegrass take on Don’t Pass Me By. Third set was fun - rocking Bowie > Bouncing were faves, and it closes with an extended Squirming Coil outro w/ Page’s piano going full Keith Jarrett, just how I like. 10/21/95, Lincoln, Pershing Auditorium- LivePhish Release - Awesome show - whole thing rocks hard. Tweezer Reprise sandwiched the first set, great Reba jam > Wilson; Lizards is amazing, especially the closing solo; Strange Design sounds gorgeous here; Good Times Bad Times cover perfectly melts back into Tweeprise. The moment of realization that they've moved from jamming the GTBT solo into a Tweezer solo was my favorite part of the show. Set 2 has a wild Bowie jam > Lifeboy, a long YEM that’s just okay, and closes with a great Hood jam & a Suzy Greenberg with multiple Michael Jackson riffs (it was rumored they'd play one of his albums that Halloween, it ended up being Quadrophenia.

An underrated classic! Blew my mind on first listen a few years back that Parquet Courts' "Slide Machine" was a cover

I love this stupid band (Also the Mike's Song on here FUCKS) Have you been to a show yet? Can't remember Nope! I was originally planning on trying for at least two MSG / NYC-area (rumored to be in Long Island, no?) around NYE, but after this recent obsession, I've been idly plotting a trip to Hershey in August. Just trying to see how it'll fit in my work schedule, but hotels there are like $80 a night and there's still tix available for both shows, so...

Reading Liz Phair's memoir and finally listening to her non-Exile albums - really enjoying this one. Obviously "Supernova" is a big one, but Chopsticks, Go West, Cinco de Mayo, and Whip-Smart are all awesome too.

She's supposed to be releasing another memoir called Fairy Tales sometime in the future.

Squirrel Flower was pretty good as well. Loved this one! Thought her album last year was promising, but this one is a total step up - only gave it one listen so far, but I'd really recommend it. Felt like Adult Mom or even Joan Shelley at times.

Okay - how come no one's talked about this one yet? Finally got around to Spellling's latest, The Turning Wheel, and it's an instant AOTY contender. The comparison I've seen often today is Kate Bush meets Broadway with a dash of the darkly pulsating pop of her last album. It's a truly exceptional album. Also - when I was halfway thru my first listen, I saw on Twitter that Fantano *just* gave this a 10/10 today. So I expect it to be in a lot more online music discussions this year. Saw what you will about him (I'm no fan), he's much bolder with his praise than most outlets.
