I listened to 8 R.E.M. LPs, one EP, and two live shows today. It was a good day. For fun: 1. Reckoning 2. Automatic for the People 3. Murmur 4. Life's Rich Pageant 5. Chronic Town 6. Out of Time 7. Document 8. Fables of the Reconstruction 9. Green interesting green placement and im not sure i disagree I think it suffers from the chronological listening I did yesterday. It doesn't really add much sonically that isn't there on Document, and its hallmarks (at least to me) of heavy drums, less jangle, more general loudness were getting fatiguing after a few songs. On its own, it's a fine album - all of these above are at least good. But I really did not enjoy that particular listening experience yesterday. Was relieved when Out of Time pivoted to its lighter, melodic production style.

Listened to some new music this afternoon. Enjoyed the Lightning Bug record recommended earlier - the first two tracks especially were really stunning. I sort of let my attention drift during the back half, but I'll be giving it another listen soon. Also heard new stuff from Cameron Knowler, a Texas-based guitar soli player, who put out a wonderful duet album with Eli Winter earlier this year. Cam sounds great here, no crazy flourishes a la Yasmin Williams or Nathan Bowles, but some really fine melodies. Would recommend as an excellent mood piece for a calm morning. But this record by Saddle Creek signee Ada Lea was my favorite. Stereogum gave this some shine last week, and its opening track, "Damn," hooked me on first listen. The whole album is great - wry, reflective lyrics and melodies and instrumentation that calls back to recent records by Adrienne Lenker and Julia Jacklin. Would think many on this board will enjoy this record. Try it out!

New album today from Howlin Rain - one of my favorite / the best under-the-radar psych jam groups. This one's honestly their opus - the title track is an absolute behemoth, a progged-out suite with psychedelic firework guitars and soaring vocal melodies. The other tracks are similarly incredible, "Rotoscope" and "Under the Wheels" especially. Would think most/any fans of Garcia Peoples would love this, it's kind of a better recorded version of their sound - but it doesn't lose the scruffy magic of the former. I'll be eagerly awaiting my preordered LP copy, and hopefully they tour the East Coast soon?

This was a lot better than I expected, I thought it was supposed to be a quiet singer/songwriter type thing, but it was not. Another good Chicago act. (Lala Lala - I Want the Door to Open) Man, I really like about half of the songs on this album, and the other half is pretty skipable. At least it's better than the previous album of theirs I tried to listen to (TWIABP - Illusory Walls)

Really enjoying this new BBNG album! Probably wouldn't have spun it if not for a positive P4k review this morning that compared it to Pharoah Sanders. Well, I don't know if that comp holds water, but the album itself is gorgeous and wonderful. Extremely tuneful, layered, and - as the review also emphasized - focuses less on their hip-hop beatmaking chops than progressive jazz influences. Really great stuff!

(Lala Lala - I Want the Door to Open) Just gave this a listen and I'm pretty much in complete agreement. Was lukewarm on their past efforts, but really enjoyed their Pitchfork set a few years ago. This record was a really nice listen - and finally an indie-rock foray into electronics that is actually interesting? "DIVER" is an excellent track, and the highlight for sure.

Where do we all stand on DONDA now that its been out for nearly two months? I'm holding onto my extremely boring opinion that it's better than his last two LPs, approaches the highs of TLOP / Yeezus, but doesn't consistently deliver enough to make me want to listen to the whole thing uninterrupted. "Jail" is incredible though, as are like 8-10 of the other tracks. Gonna be hard to figure out where to slot it in year end lists.

I admire goodson's commitment to the "all extremely popular music is good" bit, but Donda is a phenomenal EP surrounded by 80 minutes of piss and shit

My bit can be never listening to Donda. I’m pretty committed. Never listened yet but it’s next on my list after Lingua Ignotia and Telethon so I should be able to give a formal ruling over the weekend somewhere. Also you only have 2 Pistons players

Been listening to this a lot lately. Y'all are getting the big image because it's a.) just that good, b.) only on bandcamp, and c.) I forget how to resize Some experimental shit that some of the Heads here might enjoy. It's kinda jazzy? And very psychedelic? And leans into jammy territory on many occasions? I saw it described on Twitter as 1974 Grateful Dead meets Weather Report meets fusion-era Miles. A good one!

I listened to the Lingua Ignota album yestreday and I don't think it's better than carligula but it is still very good and deserves more championing around these parts. I also listened to the Lala Lala album which I thought was good not great. Can definitely feel NNAMDI's influence all over it but I think I like the act better when it sticks in those indie rock moments.
