Bartees Strange album was really nice.
This drake album is probably the best album he’s out out since If You’re Reading This but it’s good not great.

This Pink Dolphins EP by Anteloper is really fucking cool. Looking like I might end up seeing them and the others at the international anthem showcase @ Thalia instead of John Fogerty

The new Band of Horses record is super decent. Who'da thunk it.

This was good, but he has moved away from the bombastic style he's developed over the last few albums. (the new Perfume Genius) Agreed on the new Bartees Strange, he's having a pretty solid streak so far

Sorry, catching up on 2 weeks of album listening. Another great short ep by this band, very worth a listen for the emo leaning folks on the board. Still waiting for a Chicago show from them.

Yeah they were originally announced as opening that Joyce manor show and then they dropped off before the on sale. Maybe a late riot fest add? What’s up with that!

Been spinning this one a lot lately (MJ Lenderman - Boat Songs). Sorta like a scuzzier, more acerbic and gutpunching take on Dougie Poole? The P4k review also compared him to Sparklehorse, which feels apt to me. "Hangover Game" and "TLC Cagematch" are must-listens. I bet plenty of folks on the Board would be fans. Check it out! Another way to pitch this album would be: If Alex G was good Just got around to this and it's really great.

Gonna be posting in here a bit today (hopefully) as I catch up on the releases I missed over the last month. First up - Goose! It's solid! Some really nice tracks on here (Hungersite, Whales, Honeybee) and some real clunkers (whyyy did they slow down and add horns to Hot Tea? Gotta respect their commitment to the jamband tradition of neutering your big live vehicle). And speaking of tradition, Trey sat in on their Radio City show on Saturday night. I had tix but was in Sicily, so I'm happy with that trade-off. Probably not gonna win a ton of new fans with this record, but it's a good addition to their catalogue. Just listen to Alive and Well to figure out if they're for you.

Up next was the new Bartees Strange. I'm actually halfway through a second listen of it right now, cuz I felt like I was distracted the first time around. I'm enjoying it, but I wish I liked it more. Felt that way about his debut too. Like, I love his voice. His songwriting structures are intriguing. But something about the melodies / instrumentation just doesn't connect with me. Gonna keep giving it some spins going forward though - there's def a lot going on here that I could see it growing over time. "Mulholland Drive" is a banger tho!

New Soccer Mommy album rips. "With U" was so good my jaw literally dropped. Incredible sounds on this record and her vocals remain as arrestingly nonchalent and suddenly saccharine as ever. Need to listen further to catch more of the lyrics specifically, but it's probably gonna be my favorite of hers, and I really liked Color Theory. Actually, I think I've liked each of her albums better than the one preceding it. Maybe the only member of her cadre of indie rock singer-songwriters that I feel that way about. Cool stuff!

Jaimie Branch is such a versatile, fascinating musician. Seen her play in like four different combos in the last year alone - always excellent. Need to listen again to that 14-minute closer, but I loved Earthlings - even though I'm not usually sold on her vocal tracks. The one before it was great too.

Impeccable summer vibes from this Malawian duo. The guitar playing on this shines like the sun, and is accompanied by the babatoni, a type of massive, single-string bass used in Malawi. The whole record is up-tempo, upbeat, and infectious - would highly recommend.

WOW. This is a lot to chew on. I knew going in that this was less overtly accessible than his other LPs, but I actually anticipated something more largely instrumental or less tuneful than the record turned out to be. This thing is an epic. Much more outre than his previous output for sure, but no minor work. I couldn't believe some of the turns the production took. Teeth, Eye in the Wall (that bassline!), and Hellbent especially were incredible. It won't slot into playlists and be as earwormy as Set My Heart On Fire or No Shape. But it deserves your attention and its praises. I saw someone on reddit compare it to Julia Holter's Aviary, a comparison I think I get. Two large, ambitious, emotional resonant works that weren't afraid to eschew the melodies that made past releases so popular. Try it out!

Missed this last week - really f'n good. Keep coming back to this. It will most likely be in my top 5 at the end of the year. Yea I really liked this one. Wasn't sure after the first song but it gradually won me over by the end. I appreciate how it's zigging where every other UK post-punk band is zagging, featuring hauntingly sung, sustained vocals and using sparse, repetitive lyrics instead of the wordy, speak-singing approach. Loving the bass-heaviness going on here, reminds me sometimes of Protomartyr instrumentally, though it doesn't really go as dark as they do. Very interesting project! Not sure it'll be super high in my year-end faves on a personal level, but I'm intrigued to hear more from this band.

Some quick thoughts on new albums I heard yesterday:
-- Horsegirl: Didn't do it for me. Ended up listening through twice because I was focused on a task while listening and let it loop and still nothing has stuck with me the day after.
-- MUNA: Very fun, slick indie-pop. Not something I'll probably go back to a lot, but it was a good listen. Silk Chiffon is a song I've gone back and forth on but its won me over by now, even if I've cooled on the whole Phoebe Bridgers adjacent scene.
-- Grace Ives: I really really liked this one. 10 hooky, off-kilter bedroom pop songs in less than 30 minutes. Memorable lyrics, fun delivery. This one will get a lot of replay from me.
-- Weak Signal: Saw these guys (Mike Bones from Endless Boogie) open for Howlin Rain last night and they ripped so I checked out their record and enjoyed it. His live guitar tone is massive and viscerally cutting - and you get some of that here but it's not as thrilling on record. Songs are short and simple, with a drawl akin to Ira Kaplan or Spaceman J. "Yr Deal" is the highlight - and also crushed when it was extended out beyond 10 minutes last night. Good band!

Asher Gamedze: Put out a new record, following up his 2020 LP Dialectic Soul, one of the best jazz records of the young decade. This one is a split of sorts. Two 20+ minute improvisational duets with different saxophonists. The first one didn't arrest me, but the second - featuring Alan Bishop of Sun City Girls - is some of the best new music I've heard in 2022. It's highly conversational, occasionally ugly, and similarly beautiful. Not for the faint of heart and not something I'd throw on in any type of social setting, but a wonderful slice of music nonetheless.
700 Bliss: Tried this one out and it didn't really hit home for me. Moor Mother is awesome, but I don't know if this was my favorite setting for her. But! The dark dance beats and splatters of noise were undoubtedly very cool and I'd bet it'd find some fans here.

This is legit terrific. Maybe my favorite new discovery of 2022 Just finished this up - it's really good! Reminds me of like a mashup between Jonathan Wilson and Matt Berninger. I was disappointed at first that "Steppin' Out" wasn't a Joe Jackson cover, but damn that was a great track. Thanks for the tip!
