Love it on first listen. I don’t think VW has ever come whack, but this is an improvement over FotB simply based on the fact there are only ten songs and none of them are horse shit….I’m looking at you My Mistake. Also love that the production is just bonkers. I agree with whoever said they didn’t FEEL any of the songs, but also I’m sure I will as I don’t feel most songs the first time through.
Also listened to Phosporescent which I will need more listens to love more. Nothing struck me immediately the way Revelator did on first listen.
Also J. Cole which,,,,,bruh….ok?

Listened to the new Katie Pruitt a couple of times. It’s good, not great. The lead singles seem to be the strongest material. A couplefew clunkers. Still quite interested in her show here next month at Bowery Ballroom. Kinda wild that she is playing Thalia in Chicago; I wonder if she has radio support from XRT? Or maybe it will be vastly undersold.

Does anyone else have flashbacks to that one Primitive Radio Gods song when the beat drops in Mary Boone or is it just me? Edit: Both songs sampled the beat from Soul II Soul's "Back to Life", so I guess that explains that. I thought it was Standing Outside a Broken Phone Booth as well.

I just got a chance to listen to OGWAU straight through. I enjoyed it, but I guess it felt like a "safe" VW album to me, vs FOTB which felt more like the next evolution of the band.
I also got through the first half or so of Ohio Players which was surprisingly really good. I'll reserve judgement until I finish the album but good for Beck for making The Black Keys sound fresh again, even if it's just for a few songs.

Wish I liked the new Vampire Weekend more than my first reaction. Everything sounds nice, but it didn't really make me feel anything in particular. Just like "Oh yeah these are nice Vampire Weekend songs." I imagine that'll change for me upon more listens, "Pravda" def the early standout though. Shoulda been a single. Totally. VW is a great playlist band to me. Haven't enjoyed a full album from front to back since the debut. Now that I have your attention after that hot take, I highly recommend the new Cindy Lee. If you were hesitant with their previous material bc of how uhhh weird? it was, not to worry, this is the most straightforward Pat Flegel has been ever. Just 2 hours of lo Fi pop with not single skippable moment in my book. It's streaming only via YouTube: It's AOTY material. Not exaggerating.

Really liked the album. Connect and The Surfer will be songs I skip in the future.
Can't believe most people seem to be off their early albums, those are by far my favorite albums from them.

Really liked the album. Connect and The Surfer will be songs I skip in the future. Can't believe most people seem to be off their early albums, those are by far my favorite albums from them. I was driving to/from Newark last night to see Caetano Veloso (killer show), and XMU was doing a Vampire Weekend takeover, playing songs from across their discog and mixing in the new stuff + some influences (Wire, Phish (!), Depeche Mode). Was a really nice way to revisit their catalogue and yeah those early albums still hold up IMO. I think there's a twee-ness there that people shy away from or see as a little cringe these days. But the songs fuckin' bang, and no one was writing like Ezra back then. I enjoy FOTB quite a bit, but would still put at least 2 of their earlier records above it (tbh my 2-4 VW rankings are pretty changeable, they're all good/great). Hearing them last night, it struck me how vocally forward their 2008-2013 work was. The songs are arranged such that you can't help but pay attention to what he's saying. Now, I'm warming up to the new one since I've heard it 3-4 times, but it's still missing something for me. I kinda wonder if that's cuz the denser/busier arrangements bury the vocals a bit - or at least make the vocals/lyrics feel secondary to the songs themselves. Or I may just be overthinking all this - idk!

Wait….there is a subset of VW fans that think Father of the Bride is the band’s artistic peak? Huh….

I've had a lot of different answers to this question over the years but as of today I'd say Contra.

I think qicity hit it on the head saying the best thing about this album is its length. I saved "Classical" and "Gen-X Cops" to my year playlist. I think it'll grow on me. I don't know how I'd place it on their discography and don't wanna play that game right now. This album isn't really a needle mover to get me to the Northerly shows either

Does everyone just forget that Modern Vampires of the City exists? That's their peak (for me).

Agreed though, I don't think OGWAU and FoTB are as good as to Modern Vampires.

I like Father of the Bride - some great songs, but also some really bad misses. This is a step forward from that album, and like I said, I'm genuinely psyched to hear some of these songs live. Modern Vampires is their best, though.

MVOTC is a wonderful album but it's also not better than either of the first two albums. Those first two albums are perfect front to back.

What’s wild to me in all of these takes is that the first album has the most notable skip in their entire catalogue. No skips on Contra or FotB though

my hot take is that people have sucked so much vampire weekend dick on here over the last 5 years that it seems to be genuinely startling to this board that they're capable of putting out music that is somewhere between okay and pretty good, and that some of that music has also adorned their former albums

They don't have any bad albums, but they have some bad/mediocre songs. I've listened to OGWAU 3x now and I enjoy the album but it's probably their worst. I reserve the right to change my opinion down the line.
