my hot take is that people have sucked so much vampire weekend dick on here over the last 5 years that it seems to be genuinely startling to this board that they're capable of putting out music that is somewhere between okay and pretty good, and that some of that music has also adorned their former albums There's literally multiple people in here talking about how some songs aren't good or skip-able

i mean its startling to people that vampire weekend can put out an album of "good songs" as opposed to thinking it was going to be incredible

My hot take is that the Kim Gordon album is very good. Vampire Weekend b-side with lyrics that double as a shopping list incoming.

What’s wild to me in all of these takes is that the first album has the most notable skip in their entire catalogue. No skips on Contra or FotB though Rich Man and My Mistake exist Two great songs. What are we doing here

I love it, too. It's funny to act like a couple of pages of discussion about a band's discography is out of place on a message board obsessed with music.

i mean its nothing new for us but yes its very funny to me that upon the release of a highly anticipated album, the topic dominating the conversation is where it would slot in against the rest of their work, and very little to do with the album itself
i would also posit that this board is far more obsessed with lists than we are music so im not saying its out of character. but it is funny.

Even the Pitchfork review of OGWAU spent like over half its word count describing the sounds of the record in relation to their catalogue. It's def funny and in character for this Board, but the album itself seems to be in conversation with the music that preceded it.

Alright Mr critic man let’s hear your thoughts I think they've hit a groove where something can just "sound like a vampire weekend song" now, and that's what most of the album is. They used to stand out enough that their albums felt really special, and this one doesn't. That doesn't mean its bad music, its fine. Ice Cream Piano had me convinced of a slight return-to-form, but I thought most of the rest of the album just plodded along. The album title and cover are fantastic. I don't have much else to say lol

Is there any band that's at least 5 albums deep where you don't talk about their back catalogue in comparison to their new stuff? Seems like a natural music conversation.
