Listened to the new VW album two more times today, and I am bummed to confirm that it is by far their weakest album.
I went back to Father of the Bride afterwards, and I think their strongest track on OGWAU would literally be like 14th on FOTB

Was worried this was taken off Spotify since it disappeared from my big Prince playlist. But worry not, it's still there. Elevate your Wednesday morning with a 19-minute "Purple Rain"!

New METZ is not their best. A few decent songs on there, but probably won't go back to this one much

I just listened to Cowboy Carter finally and, man, I would like this so much more if she straight up cut everything from Dolly P thru The Linda Martell Show. Woulda been chill if she'd covered an actual Linda Martell song too, but cutting 11 songs is already nitpicking enough. Overall, a fun enough time but not nearly as fun/good as Renaissance.

This Reznor/Ross score for Challengers DJ remixed by Boys Noize is pretty fun...was a little surprised when some Trent vocals popped up

Maggie Rogers was good and still house plants was Fine.
The best new album I listened to this week was a tie between Sarah shook and GloRilla

I guess the Dolly song was something she recorded in the immediate aftermath of Jay-Z cheating on her, but it’s also maybe the worst song a global superstar has put out in a minute

The debut from Nicolette & the Nobodies came out yesterday; I checked it out since they're opening for Sarah Shook & the Disarmers here next month. Some solid stuff; looking forward to seeing them live. Worth checking out rango420 krentist Tweet et al.

Only halfway thru it, but this really is wonderful. Highly worthy of the P4k 9.1 and super cool to see so much of the indie world going out of their way to support this one. Need lots more time/listens to really digest it, but an easy AOTY contender.

Wish I liked the new Vampire Weekend more than my first reaction. Everything sounds nice, but it didn't really make me feel anything in particular. Just like "Oh yeah these are nice Vampire Weekend songs." I imagine that'll change for me upon more listens, "Pravda" def the early standout though. Shoulda been a single. Totally. VW is a great playlist band to me. Haven't enjoyed a full album from front to back since the debut. Now that I have your attention after that hot take, I highly recommend the new Cindy Lee. If you were hesitant with their previous material bc of how uhhh weird? it was, not to worry, this is the most straightforward Pat Flegel has been ever. Just 2 hours of lo Fi pop with not single skippable moment in my book. It's streaming only via YouTube: It's AOTY material. Not exaggerating. CO. SIGN.

Yeah seeing that 9.1 gave me old school P4K feels. It's such a great booster for independent artists. Wonderful album, it's basically the only thing I'm listening to lately. It's now free on their website, tho a donation is asked.

It's now free on their website, tho a donation is asked. Just copped a download, sent some $, and did the legwork of converting it to MP3 (rather than keep 2 gigs of WAV files on my computer). Second listen is even better than the first.

I've been a huge critic of Cloud Nothings since they pivoted on Life Without Sound. Since then I haven't cared for anything. But the singles for this new one were promising and the album is solid. Best they've done imo since Here and Nowhere Else.

31 songs. I’m not a big fan but this album does nothing for me. No way I make it through in one sitting.

EXTREMELY MIDDLE-AGED WHITE MALE MOVE: I'mma wake up and listen to the new Pearl Jam first thing this morning.
It's pretty good. Best of their late career output.

I've heard it's good but still a little hesitant to get my hopes up for a PJ album in 2024.

31 songs. I’m not a big fan but this album does nothing for me. No way I make it through in one sitting. I tried a bit last night (to the first half, the double dip get extra sales second half wasn't out yet) and I found it incredibly uninteresting musically, the production felt really unoriginal and uninteresting. It was like more lowkey kind of like Folklore/Evermore but far less thoughtful and interesting. Also with very few exceptions albums shouldn't be more than an hour long much less two hours long

I will not be listening to a 2-hour Taylor Swift album, but I will be cracking up at this throughout the day:

Just finished the Taylor album as the local informed hater. Easily her worst album lyrically by a mile, I really don’t know how any of these songs got past first draft stage. Not a lot going on musically that keeps me engaged with it, Jack’s production is still Jack’s production. Thought that maybe he’d loosen the grip seeing how much everyone likes the Lana albums that manage to sound different from everything else he touches but it appears that’s not the case. Dessner produced tracks are a little bit better but still pretty boring. Say what you will about Florence and the Machine, much of it is valid even if I am a fan, but it’s wild hearing someone with an interesting voice singing on this album for a track and it really highlights how safe Taylor has been playing it for a long ass time.

I've heard it's good but still a little hesitant to get my hopes up for a PJ album in 2024. Same, but my superfan friends who went to the listening party on Tuesday night recommended “Waiting for Stevie” and “Setting Sun” so I listened to those two last night and if nothing else, I think they will be pretty great additions to the live set this time around.
