Anyone have some favorite 80s AUD tapes?
I'm trying to listen to a bunch of great AUDs as I read Mark Rodriguez's book on Dead tapers and would appreciate some more recs for the 80s, beyond heavy hitters like 11/30/80 and 10/10/82.
Right now I'm listening to 5/13/83 at the Greek and it's incredible. 83 Dead is like the anti-Dead & Co. Every song is like 10 bpm faster than normal and, on this show, Jerry is fluttering beautifully in and around the hyper-charged foundation. A great show.

Anyways, here are my write-ups from the batch of AUD tapes I listened to over the last two weeks. Some real incredible music going on here. 6/24/70 (Ken Lee)- AUD only tape - no SBD exists (Bear was on tight parole in CA awaiting his sentencing). Acoustic first set is nice, but the fireworks (literally, provided by some dude with “Boots Pyrotechnic Services” emblazoned on his jacket, as per taper Ken Lee) are saved for the electric set. In love with the NFA > Easy Wind transition, the latter is the best I’ve ever heard it. Jerry’s mercury-slick leads and Pig in control (after the song he quips “Hand me that cee-gar, Bobby, he was aiming for me,” presumable re: a fan). Then after Uncle, Jerry intones “Mickey has to get his gongs all together, we’re gonna do Dark Star. There’ll be a minute or two of respective silence while Mickey fiddles aimlessly around the stage.” Then someone (Phil?) whispers a few times “Silence… silence for Mickey…” lmaooo. Dark Star is an epic, essential Dead listening. DS > Attics > DS > SugarMag > DS > SS is absurd. Highlight is the gorgeous electric Attics leading seamlessly back to DS and a Feelin’ Groovy (?) jam. The vamped SM intro grooves too. Not the best AUD tape but the best show only available on AUD.
8/6/71 (Rob Bertrando) - Unreal fidelity from the get-go - Jerry’s Bertha leads soar with the energy of a Live/Dead 16-track. Bobby after Bertha: “You there with the microphone - if you want a decent recording, you gotta move back about 40 feet.” Mr. Charlie is great, Bill plays with swagger and Jerry’s solo is fabulous. Hard to Handle solo is insane, rated the GOAT on Heady, and the crowd singalong to Casey Jones (whoo whoo!) is infectious. On the TOO reprise, Jerry plays with a proto-WRS intro lick, then drops into a Floyd-esque space.
6/10/73 (Monte Barry)
- First recording from Monte Barry, he was taping on LSD at RFK Stadium, the Dead did three sets with the Allmans opening and sitting in on the third set. Audio is less pristine than I’d like, but you can still immerse yourself. Major S1 highlights were They Love Each Other, Bird Song (best of the set), and PITB (loved hearing the crowd go wild for Donna’s scream). Jerry teases “Jessica” for a second at the end of Eyes into Stella Blue. Fireworks blasting off all throughout show - cool at times (Stella) but gets annoying really quickly. Then woah - a killer Dark Star here. Very melodically creative - Jerry takes it into a blues direction, Phil moves it into space, then the acid jazz of 73., then back into Allmansy bliss. Then Phil goes full Seastones around the 20 minute mark. Sounds incredible on the AUD.
6/23/74, Miami, Jai Alai Fonton (Moore)
- First set of this one is nice - recording is great. Only GD version of Berry’s “Let it Rock,” JGB played it more. To Lay Me Down is the S1 highlight, great solos. Seastones is short and wild then a jam leads into the GOAT Ship of Fools. Massive highlight. Black Peter is really lovely too - slow but swings instead of sludges. Good Dark Star > an incredible, hard-hitting Spanish Jam > loose, jammy segue intro to US Blues. Similar to what happens later that week in Boston (DP12).
12/5/79
- It’s a fine first set, nothing spectacular though. Bob does a Just Exactly Perfect joke as they ready Easy to Love and the Althea is quite nice. That’s the keeper of the set.
9/14/82
- Really strong start with Jack Straw > Peggy-O. Very brisk and muscular. CC Rider goes pretty hard on AUD tapes. Starting to “get” it more. Oh my god this Bird Song is divine. Jerry brightening the corners all over the solos. Deal, Rider, and Samson solos all pop too. Sound is incredible here and Jerry is on fire. High Time is beautiful, vocally top notch. He’s Gone flirts with an extended jam before a super short D>S (tape cut out) that melts into Iko Iko - very pretty and unique melodic jam for the first 2 mins. Transition into Truckin is much more jarring.
10/9/82
- Idk I kinda feel like this show is a little over-hyped. The tape (Rango) is impeccable, absolutely cannot believe it’s not a SBD at times. Everyone is crisp and clear, Bob especially shines on rhythm. Performances are good for sure - a good, fun listen. But nothing that screamed essential to me. Deal was a ripper and Eyes was a lovely sub-10 min version, the tape fidelity here shines the brightest. Get a lovely, powerful Morning Dew in S2 to send us home happy.
5/13/83
- Absurdly good AUD tape from Rango. Fidelity is crystal-clear and powerful and the great is hyped. Cold Rain opener goes hard, but show really kicks off at a razor-sharp Loser. LRR is super fun w/ the crowd literally whooping and hollering along. Bird Song is the fastest I’ve heard and Garcia is fluttering beautifully everywhere. Let It Grow is a banger and then the outro jam gets free and amazing. Jerry is locked in. Vibe continues to a perfect 80s China > Rider, plus fun moment where Bob doesn’t play his intro part, so Jerry covers for him and they harmonize on it together to the crowd’s delight. Best C>R I’ve heard since 74. Estimated is nice but Eyes is just perfect. 20 perfect minutes of blissful, peak-era Dead jamming. Even has a pretty little wind-down jam and space into Drums. Throwing Stones melts seamlessly from Space - one of the best Space transitions I’ve heard. Great version.

Loooooooolololololololol this is crazy - "creative differences?!??" How're you gonna force Billy outta this fuckin' band? I was planning on going to one last D&C show this summer, but now it's only gonna happen if the ticket is $20 or less. Insane.

Some are speculating it’s because Phil is sitting in at Cornell and there’s the Jill Lesh issues which would be maybe the funniest possible outcome

Some are speculating it’s because Phil is sitting in at Cornell and there’s the Jill Lesh issues which would be maybe the funniest possible outcome Saw this too, but idk it seems like wishful thinking. Tho there is something deeply funny about breaking up the band to play a $1,000+ show at Cornell to celebrate the hallowed… 46(?) anniversary. Reading some of the discourse online about this has me more inclined to believe it’s a tempo issue that finally boiled over.

Bobby has def gotten slower even in the last 4-5 years, but I dunno I would about imagine Bill could wait it out for 20 more shows lol. I’m feeling an extremely cheap re-sale ticket for this tour as well

I guess On Tour Brewing is streaming this show so I think I'm going there with a buddy for that
Bill didn't play half the fuckin tour last year I think he's just old and tired but the timing of it all gives me some real "kicking Brian and Al outta the Beach Boys" vibes and I can't say it's good

while spring cleaning a bookcase today, the better half found a ticket stub to a fall 1998 Mickey Hart and Planet Drum show at park west that she attended w/ some friends a couple years before we met. There are recordings on the web of shows right before and right after this one, but I couldn't find one of this.
Looked up that the drummers then included Sikiru Adepoju (who was also part of Hart's band when we saw them at the lakeview music festival on sheffield in 2008, and who has played with Mickey for what seems like every solo album he's done), Giovanni Hidalgo, Zakir Hussain (who is at ravinia this summer as part of shakti) and Tower of Power's Dave Garibaldi.

Been busy so missed posting about it, but my favorite live dead show turned 50 on Thursday. Sometime in early 2017 I turned it on on a long drive from Chicago to ~Edwardsville on a whim and it's stuck with me ever since. Probably listened to it cover to cover a dozen or so times- not nearly as many times as others or other deadheads who have their favorite shows, but it's a lot for me. The run from "Don't Ease Me In" to "Row Jimmy" is among my favorite stretches of music, and 2nd set is all killer no filler. This got pressed to vinyl for the first time a year or two ago and I usually end up playing a side from this show when I host a poker game. Check it out.

Howdy! Please enjoy this Fall 73 mixtape, loving curated by yours truly from the mini 8 show run from 10/19 thru 11/1. It's 3 hours long, 21 songs, sequenced in a setlist-like fashion. I included a text document with my notes on each song / show too, to give some context why I chose particular tracks, as well as album art from the web. I'll post the tracklist below. Lemme know if there's any issues with the Dropbox, I'm relatively new to it as a sharing platform. www.dropbox.com/scl/fo/wxewhduqhwj3lmtojd7pt/h?rlkey=op1dndm1wjac4d5ftrttgpahv&dl=0Fall 1973 Mixtape 1.) Here Comes Sunshine 10/25 2.) Beat It On Down The Line 10/21 3.) Row Jimmy 10/19 4.) Black Throated Wind 10/21 5.) Tennessee Jed 10/29 6.) Mexicali Blues 10/23 7.) Big River > 10/27 8.) Playin’ in the Band 10/27 9.) He’s Gone 11/1 SET BREAK 10.) Dark Star > 10/25 11.) MLB Jam > 10/25 12.) Dark Star > 10/25 13.) Eyes of the World 10/25 14.) Truckin’ > 11/1 15.) The Other One > 10/29 16.) Drums > 10/23 17.) Space Jam > 10/23 18.) Weather Report Suite 10/23 19.) Stella Blue 10/30 20.) Casey Jones 10/23 ENCORE 21.) Johnny B. Goode 10/19 Show Notes: 10/19, Oklahoma City, Fairgrounds Arena: - Row Jimmy is a fave version - slow, steady with heart-wrenching solos. Bill crushes it too. Even closes with a ripping JBG. [Ed. note: This is Dick’s Picks 19 so the whole show rules - check out the Dark Star > Morning Dew] 10/21, Omaha, Omaha Civic Auditorium: - Funny BIDTL count-off flub (“We need to teach our drummer how to count to twenty”) and World Series winner announcement pre-Loser. Band locks in afterwards: Billy crushing BTW. 10/23, Bloomington, MN, Metropolitan Sports Center: - Fun Mexicali w/ Bob shouting “It’s Polka Time!” at the start. S2 is wild, with… a minimal but sleek Space jam. Leads perfectly into Weather Report Suite, the show’s highlight. Beautiful jazzy, liquidy tones from Jerry/Bob. Prelude is maybe the most interesting I’ve heard. Let It Grow peak and jam is a-tier jazzy Dead, and Keith’s solo is the moment of the night. S3 stops halfway thru when security beats up a fan. Phil shouts “Knock it off,” then the band cuts while he says (x3) “Ok asshole! That’s it for you - you’re through!” Jerry: “Hey, don’t beat on our audience, guys.” Crowd sounds raucous. “That’s a bad scene! That’s not very good!” says, Bill (?!?) of all people. Sounds almost twangy. Bob: “Would you rather hear music or rather get punched?” 10/25, Madison, Dane County Coliseum: - Here Comes Sunshine is the standout of S1. Either Phil or Bobby is doing some gorgeous moving lines during the later solo section. Dark Star w/ MLB > Eyes is the meat of the show. They drop into MLB before even getting to the verses, then come out and the jam swirls into increasingly darker, further-out directions, before dropping into an emphatically joyous Eyes. Phil is high in the mix and has some great runs. A stellar sequence. And a Dick Latvala favorite. 10/27, Indianapolis, State Fair Coliseum: - S2 anchored by PITB > ½ Step > Big River > PITB sandwich. Some really cool transitions, especially love Big River melting into a liquified Playin’ jam. 10/29, St. Louis, Kiel Auditorium: - S1 is really crisp, Tennessee Jed was actually my highlight - really bouncy with a great peak. TOO comes in HOT. Jerry’s leads and even his little fills are scalding. Then everyone drops out into a minimal, space section, before storming back w/ dissonant attacks, Phil nears blows out the speakers. Then Keith pulls us out of it with some beautiful, near-classical piano rolls. 14-17 he owns the band. Pulls them from the abyss to the blissful melody and back into song itself. No shit. It’s the best thing I’ve ever heard him play in the Grateful Dead. 10/30 St. Louis, Kiel Auditorium: - Second jam shines into an all-timer IMO Stella Blue. [Ed note: do not miss the Playin’ and Dark Star > Eyes sequences in this show, they just missed the cut here] 11/1, Evanston, McCaw Memorial Hall - Only S2 circulates. It’s a very cool segue fest tho. A gorgeous, stately He’s Gone feat. some of the best vocal work I’ve ever heard on this one. Harmonies kill, Donna shines, it sounds studio polished. Another Truckin > Wharf Rat and Sugar Mag to close. Truckin’ seems normal but Garcia hits an insane lick at 7:40 that honestly peaks the entire set. Holy shit.

Listening to 1/18/78 now, I really appreciate that ReListen queues up shows from this day in history. They definitely sound tired here but Terrapin>Playin is tremendous. I think Jerry fucked up his voice a bit earlier in the run so occasionally he sounds rough but it’s worth a spin for sure.
Related I think today in 1969 is the infamous “dosing the coffee pot at the playboy club” incident
