in honor of jerry's birthday and the more-than-i-expected amount of dead fans on the board
what shows have everybody been grooving on lately?
for me i have been going back to the europe 72 stuff and while i love the insanity and messiness of a like late 80's or 90 show, this shit is so fuckin good - like their is a version of "greatest story ever told" on vol 2 that is incredible
also merch-related but i am this close to pulling the trigger on an online-ceramics.com tee because they are so fucking sick and the guys are super nice

The only Grateful Dead song I've ever listened to is Casey Jones. It's good.

May have mentioned it here before but Carousel Ballroom 68 has been a trip. What a wild dead era. Somewhat unrelated but I think there is a Dead Head Thread in the bands part of the board

Not a huge Dead fan but it has been fun watching John Mayer recently. Dead and Co. John Mayer is so far and away the best iteration of John Mayer. Love where he's at rn.

Yeah it’s like they unearthed something in him. Personally I’m a fan of this thing the band members have been doing where they tour dead songs with younger artists as a part of the band. It’s a new era of The Dead and I love it.

mentioned it in another thread, but i fell asleep during the drum solo at a dead '81 show. i mean, it was a neat experience, but 13-year old me just didn't get it at the time.
also, one of my highschool friends followed the dead until they broke up in 95 and he turned his dead-following candlemaking hobby into a business where he made 100k a year.
and i'd like to see the john mayer dead version.

What shows would y'all recommend for someone who has listened to 1.) Workingman's Dead, American Beauty, and the debut 2.) Only heard the Cornell 77 live album so far but loved it
Been wanting to dive into their shows for the longest time, but am v. intimidated by the size of the catalog.

Also for early shows my first was Pembroke Pines 77. All of the spring 77 is top tier Dead, Europe 72 is a great place to dig in a little deeper. 5/8/77 is my favorite and regarded as their best but it sounds like you checked that out.

really glad we didn't name the radiohead thread "talkin' head" Counterpoint: C'mon xam, let's make this happen I am probably due for my annual Dead revisit at some point this fall. The only development that I have is that I recently bought an original pressing of "From the Mars Hotel" for $5 and it is dope

I never got too into the Dead and I think that many of their songs are genuinely quite terrible, but they are capable of making truly terrific music.
Things I hate: Way too many lazy lyrics about opposites ("sky was yellow and the sun was blue"), two drummers, noodling
Things I like: American Beauty, John Mayer, old hippies.

I've been listening to JGB's Kean College show a ton lately. That After Midnight > Eleanor Rigby > After Midnight is delightful.

I saw a tribute group called "Play Dead." They were okay although I only recognized 2 songs. Never really got into the Grateful Dead. Now, my wife's aunt who is an ex-hippie-now 65 year old, she knows them all.
