Figured I'd start this one.
I'm headed to Italy (fly into Rome) for 14 days in August/September with my girlfriend. Have done a good bit of research but would love some more tips on where to go and what to see.
Right now our leading candidates for places to visit are Rome (obviously), Florence, Bologna, Amalfi Coast, and Lake Garda (Alpine lakes). Want to hit 3-4 of those probably. But definitely open to ideas.

Yeah you can have a fun three days in Florence. Highlight for me was the Michalngelo Plaza or whatever across the river. Great view of the city, I had a book and just read on the steps, also did the same on top of the dome and saw the sunset which was beautiful.
Rome you can do in 4. One day for the vatican, one for the coliseum/forum, and then one just for a general tour/pantheon/trivoli fountain.
I did a day trip from Rome to Pompeii and that was awesome, spent a few hours in Naples on my way back and had some awesome pizza. I can't remember the place but I can look it up.

Both of those suggestions fit into our current rough itinerary so that's good to hear.
We're thinking 3.5 days Rome, 3 days Florence, 3 days Amalfi Coast, 3 days Italian Alps/Lakes. Then 1 day trip from Florence to Bologna/Modena, Siena or maybe even Venice in between Florence and Lake Garda in the Alps.

I've done Rome, Pompeii, and Naples on a 10-day trip, and it was awesome. Definitely recommend. I know of a great hostel in Pompeii if need be. Stopping in Naples is worth it for the pizza, though you'll probably be able to do well enough for that just about anywhere in Italy.

I'm guessing the Napolitano style pizza will be prevalent in Rome and Amalfi. Pompeii is worth doing one of those day trip tours though?

All the pizza is good and the differences are marginal. Pompeii is totally worth it. I booked it last minute and had the option of doing a $20 tour with like 50 people or a $80 tour with a group of 6. I went for the later. Ended up just being me and TWO tour guides for three hours, it was amazing and my favorite tour the whole time. You can go and not do a tour but there's so much I learned and wouldn't have picked up on if I didn't. Here's their link www.viator.com/tours/Pompeii/Ancient-Pompeii-Small-Group-Tour/d24336-20455P1

If you do that, then you may as well stop at Naples on the way back since it's along the way. When we went to Naples, we went to the archaeological museum there. It houses a lot of stuff from Pompeii as well as Roman landmarks, such as the Baths of Caracalla (one of my favorite landmarks in Rome). If you leave Pompeii in the morning by train, you can stop for a few hours in Naples and then get back on a train and be back in Rome in time for dinner.

Also, I highly recommend the Capuchin Crypt in Rome. Very beautiful, but very creepy. The dude who assembled all those bones was a madman.

Thanks guys! Always great to get restaurant and tour recs for international trips. Harder to get a grasp.
Really would love peoples' thoughts on Amalfi as someone in their mid 20s without thousands to spend.

Head's up to anyone traveling through Midway soon. Most of the food options are closed during renovation, starting Friday: chicago.eater.com/2017/5/11/15623410/midway-airport-food-renovations-new-restaurants-may-12It’s a major facelift for Midway as only four previous restaurants—Reilly's Daughter Pub, Gold Coast Dogs, Pegasus, and Nuts on Clark—will stay, the Trib noted. According to that, that would mean Manny’s Coffee Shop & Deli will also vanish from Midway. Work will start on Concourse A, then Concourse B, and then the main concessions area.

No, if you read the Tribune article linked they're being replaced. There will be food options open - the existing place closes one night and then the replacement will open the following morning.
I have a friend who works for a hospitality group that manages restaurants in these airports and have heard stories about just huge crews of people descending on them to get five or ten restaurants flipped to something completely different overnight, it's pretty awesome.
Not happy about Potbelly being removed, though.

We have a 3 hour layover at Midway on Monday, so good to know we'll still have some options.
I wonder what will end up taking the spot of Harry Caray's.

Went through Midway yesterday afternoon - restaurants near A gates have received a bulk of the updates so far. Biggest news is that Harry Caray's will close by end of week and will be replaced by The Go Go White Sox Bar and Grill.

Dumb thing I keep track of throughout the year: Southwest will open flights for the next two months (through 1/7) tomorrow morning.
I have a habit of just impulsively booking flights every time this comes around and cancelling them if they get cheaper before they come up or I decide I don't want to go. Especially during the holidays and cold months...

I usually have to do that for Denver-Kentucky flights, because there's only one non-stop option available each day and it fills up pretty quickly. SW is introducing a route from Denver to Cincy next month, so hopefully that helps.
We are not planning on going anywhere for the holidays this year.

Also, Por Que No? for tacos. Drink beer. So many breweries/taprooms, brew pubs. I liked Commons Brewery a lot. And Cascade Barrel House for sours.
