Sincere thanks everybody. That's a huge help and a lot of these places sound awesome.
A bunch of them are names that I'm a fan of or recognize from the beer scene here and we're really excited to check out the physical spaces.

We have a Jolly Pumpkin here now so I didn't include it. Up that way though, Short's is whatever but I've heard the food is great. I did not know that! That's cool.

It's in Hyde Park. We went last week before the Courtney Barnett/Kurt Vile thing. Probably the best option in the area for Rockefeller Chapel shows, though I bet the Promontory has better cocktails. The pizza was legit.

So you may not be in luck. Actually, last year we had one of the worst cold fronts in a while, it was below zero here when I flew to DFN, and that was the front that crept all the way down to Houston in the middle of RTJ's set...

Midwest in winter - it's not really all that predictable.

dates I'm looking at are Dec 2nd and 3rd so being first part of month might help
That'd only be a day there but that cuts down a night of hotel stay/imposing on someone, and I'd be getting in at like 9 AM Saturday and leaving at 8 PM Sunday. $80 isn't really much to spend at all for a full day and a half in Chicago

It's not like you're going to Chicago in December for the beautiful weather, so I'd just cave and get the tickets. Use the potentially bad weather as an excuse to eat more great food or something.

I just clicked the flexible dates button on the homepage for southwest, put in December. I'm not sure why the deal on that page is so much more expensive
I'm also searching in Incognito mode sometimes that helps because flight prices are weird

RTJ/Queens is that Saturday night if you're trying to get spicy.

RTJ/Queens is that Saturday night if you're trying to get spicy. I saw that
Pretty expensive but also that's a super fun bill and QOTSA seems to be avoiding Texas so if I don't end up with other plans I may be there

LA for four days next week. It's my first time. Any must-dos in the Santa Monica area? My nights will be pretty well dictated by my group but I could get out on my own during the day probably.

You'll obviously be right by Santa Monica pier, which is one of the cooler things there. You can do the Hollywood walk of fame touristy stuff, but you'll probably get tired of that pretty quickly. The Griffith Observatory is worth the drive and walk up the hill though.
Edit: Venice beach is like a mile away from Santa Monica pier too. Wasn't really into that though.

hard to complain for the price. like, it's mediocre bucket seats and you get advertisements the whole flight (both on intercom and by attendants) and you have to pay for any drink or snack and you probably still only get 1 carry on bag. but i mean for ~$20 to go between major european cities...i was fine with it. just put in your headphones and take a nap or read.

Only advice I've ever received related to RyanAir is to make sure it's a short flight. It's not equipped for normal size human beings.

I've flown Ryanair a few times and had pretty fine experiences. All of them were under 2.5 hours I think. Much better than Spirit, Frontier, etc, but you still feel like you're on a budget airline. How long of a flight is it?

I think like 2 hours. Just trying to cobble together an interesting layover.
