Bears finally signed Roquan Smith. Hopefully he has enough time to learn the defense for the opener.

I hope you are all ready for me to shitpost about the Browns here every Sunday. Apologies in advance and I look forward to this forthcoming dialogue with myself.

Browns should at least be interesting this year. The Hard Knocks spotlight only adds to the intrigue.
Bless 'em.

The good news about fantasy football is that it's hard to completely botch the draft and you only need to pay attention to your team like 20 minutes per week

I played last year and it was fun watching the scores move around but at the same time many of my players were awful

I'm caaauutiously optimistic right now, but I'm ready to go full on Super Bowl or bust mode if we win Week 1 and/or Baker looks good at literally any moment on the field this year. Be warned.

The good news about fantasy football is that it's hard to completely botch the draft and you only need to pay attention to your team like 20 minutes per week I think it's pretty easy to screw up a draft if you're not prepared. I've seen people make all sorts of stupid moves. Taking QBs in the first couple of rounds. Not waiting until the final two rounds to take DEF and K. Drafting second QBs, TEs, DEFs and Ks. Picking well-known players who are well past their prime (ex: Jordy Nelson). You don't have to have a great draft to have a good season, but there's no coming back from a terrible draft (unless you're in a league with a bunch of other managers who don't know what they're doing, either).

This is amazing and I hope they are checking the beer regularly as there's a non-zero chance it'll go bad before they win a game

Just got this from the Bears fan group in Denver:
BEARS George McCaskey and other personnel are to meet briefly with our group, after the Bears-Broncos practice ends today (Wed Aug 15th) about noon. Congregate at the upright (goal post) Field #2. Please communicate this to any Bears fans who you know are at the practice.
Why?

Figured y’all might have some advice on this:
I am commish of a fantasy league (lol) and we’re doing our draft live on Friday. I’ve never done one much less run one before, so I’m looking for advice on how to do so. It’s a 12 team league and everyone will be there except for one person who will be Skyping in. Aside from time limits on picks, anything else I should do?
I’m planning to randomize the draft order (numbers out of a hat), allow people 20 minutes to strategize, and then get going. I’m thinking 2 minutes per pick

Also you should have some large draft board.
Also you should do an auction league.

My deputy commish has a board he’s bringing. The league runs the range of patience levels so we’re not doing an auction league this year, though we might implement keepers

I've only done live in-person drafts for a couple of leagues over the years and it seems like just agreeing to keep it moving is the best strategy. A timer feels draconian when everyone's together. It also puts a significant burden on the commissioner when you have to a) manage the big board, b) manage the timer and c) manage your own draft strategy.
I think giving people 20 minutes to figure out what they're going to do once the draft order is sorted out is too much. Everyone should be arriving with a good idea of how their top 25-30 players are ranked. If they're not, then 20 minutes isn't going to make much of a difference. If you're using Yahoo!, there's a setting where you can have the system randomize the draft order well in advance of the draft. I'm guessing other sites probably have similar features.

This happens every year during my live in-person draft. Often more than once. There's also a fair chance every year that some folks will absentmindedly try to draft either a) retired players like Demarco Murray and/or b) injured players like Derrius Guice.

We used an Excel spreadsheet to eliminate that problem - all available players in the first tab, delete them once they are selected.

I'm not in love with my team but I usually do pretty good in trades/waivers so I'm not worried about it. Picking the Bears D in the 14th round was dumb but 6 drinks in whats a guy to do

Bears open up the season with Green Bay, then Seattle. I'd just drop that defense now and find a better streaming option. I'd also drop ASJ in favor of additional depth at WR or RB.

I'm definitely dropping the Bears, I'm just waiting to see what the field is like. Same with ASJ, though I might trade Kelce so we'll see

Curious what they had to give up. Raiders were asking for two first round picks.

Curious what they had to give up. Raiders were asking for two first round picks. From what I've read so far, it's at least two first rounders. There might be a third rounder included or a Bears defensive player. I have mixed feelings about the trade. It's a lot to give up, but Mack is a true difference-maker. Then again, it's not like he's the final piece of the puzzle that's going to propel them to the Super Bowl. But damn, the defense looks promising. They already had a chance to be top 10. A pass rusher like Mack can make them a top 5 unit. In a way, I think this puts a shitton of pressure on Trubisky to perform well. From what I heard, they had to scale back the offense because he wasn't "getting it". I hope I'm wrong, but I remain skeptical that he will be a franchise QB. (Yes, he is by default, but I'm not sure he lasts as a starter beyond his rookie contract).
