Damn that one is really powerful. Pretty early in my college career I took a Buddhism and eastern religions class and a big assignment we had was to spend a half hour practicing real, genuine, mindful meditation in the quietest environment we could find. It was wild to think about how one can use the slightest sound for some form of escape from thinking about their real problems. I can look back at times when I was doing poorly in school and would have headphones in on campus when I walked from class to class so I wouldn’t have to think while no one was talking to me. I’ve always wanted to try one of those quiet rooms, maybe I’ll see if there’s one near me. Might be good for some self discovery around now.

Seriously. I stopped being the guy who loudly told people that they should wear them, but just know that I'm judging/disgusted with all of you when I don't see you wearing earplugs at shows. This story is a great reason why.

Doesn't he come to the conclusion that after 40+ years of not taking care of his ears at shows his ear damage isnt that bad?

Good for him, but I already have a moderate case of it after ~15 years of going to shows.
I do think shows have gotten louder in general.
My initial response is more self pity/disappointment than anything about the author.

That was cool. I've been reading some more of his pieces since they announced he was leaving P4k, and his Albert Ayler piece is worth checking out, too.
I have some mild tinnitus at best as well, and I would be interested to see what my experience would be in a chamber like that.

Tinnitus or not I feel like it would be overwhelming. I also forgot how loud shows are day one of Lolla when I forgot to bring my ear plugs in.

If you think you don't have tinnitus, you will find out extremely fast that you most likely have a mild form of it in those rooms. It honestly is disorientating being in those rooms, it's very surreal not hearing any sound bouncing around the room at all. And you can even hear your heartbeat, if you are quiet enough. It's pretty wild.

oh man. working at a fiber to the home company for 2 years -- even tho i was in engineering and only did a handful of house installs -- i can confirm that basically every horror story about being in any strangers' house is true
think the nastiest one my friend in Installs told me was when the customer had a snake he let roam around downstairs. the skins it shed (that he left lying around, mind you) made it look like it was probably a good 6 or 7 feet long and they all gtfo
