Okay and my list is done! Going to post it in a minute, but I'm very happy with how it came out. I tried to be mindful of balancing the stuff that got me deeply into music around 2010-2011, with my current preferences. A handful of these records were unheard by me up to like a month ago, which I think is really cool. I appreciate all the recommendations and lists from other users here that I used for help/inspiration along the way. I'll say one more thing - I had no idea what my #1 would be until I finally came down to my last four choices. That record has always been special to me, but I never really thought back on how much it continues to resonate and evolve as my life moves onward. If I were to make this list again in six months, who knows? It might not be up top. But for now, it felt like the right choice. God bless John Darnielle. 38. Black Star - S/T What's this? Is it the Talib Kweli/Mos Def collaboration? Cuz if so that came out in 1998.

Yeah they re-released it in 2002. Don't worry, we're doing the 90s next.

2001 had so many good records. I’m kinda hoping one of these years end up being really bad so I can get through one in a week or something.

2001 had so many good releases. The only other year that comes close for me is 2008. But only bc of Deerhunter, No Age, and Women.

Man, I cannot stop stumbling into albums I forgot about. My list is going to look a lot different than what's posted in that thread right now.
A few just from the past few days...
Ween - Quebec AC/DC - Stiff Upper Lip Flaming Lips - At War With the Mystics

I vote for Fiona Apple and Jens Lenkman - I hadn't heard that Fiona record until this project started, and it shot way up my list. Also, c'mon, let's have the same list.
Also, Disintegration Loops is one you can listen to in bits and pieces in between really anything. My favorite loop is #6, fwiw

If you don’t listen to Madvillainy and Mclusky I may never stop crying.

I feel pretty confident I have my top 10 set. Everything else is relatively fluid, I just wanna make sure I tackle everything on my list before I hit submit
Also I apologize in advance for adding nothing to our gender diversity statistics on this one, I think I count 3 bands with women in them in my top 30. Gets a little more balanced later on down there, but, yeah, I'm not as progressive as I thought!
For you old timey boarders: y'all remember when opti asked if you prefer male or female voices on albums? I don't remember anything about the specifics of that thread, but I bet that would be a trainwreck of a read right now if we still had it

If you don’t listen to Madvillainy and Mclusky I may never stop crying. Madvillainy has been on my to-listen to list forever. I didn't even know what Mclusky was until this project and I'm not too proud to admit that

I was gonna make a list for this project but it would have just been Madvillainy over and over again and then like, Kid A or whatever.

Gonna spit some takes!
Madvillany: Wouldn't say it's forgettable but it didn't strike any chords with me!
Cat Power: Who the fuck didn't tell me to listen to that one sooner?
Women: Ripped then, ripped now
The Killers: Are the Killers

Hot Fuss was maybe the first sorta "indie rock" record I heard/acquired as it was released, which still feels like a big deal to me. 2004 was a big turning point in what I listened to. It was mostly just like AC/DC and Aerosmith before then.

Have had a bit of a love/hate relationship with Okkervil River, but this debut record is pretty solid.

Mclusky are not only the last good rock band but possibly the only good rock band.

this is probably the most difficult album list i've ever tossed together.
the first cut was 262 albums. then i picked out 80-some albums that seemed like no-brainers and ordered them. but i threw out a few of those. so i made another list of 40-some to fill the 20-some open spots. and then i re-ordered things for a while.
year breakdown:
2000 - 11 2001 - 15 2002 - 14 2003 - 13 2004 - 12 2005 - 9 2006 - 6 2007 - 8 2008 - 4 2009 - 8
no real surprises there.

So we've got 13 lists so far, and a few weeks left for this. It's interesting to see how diverse everyone's list is, there will be no unanimous no. 1 or even top 10 at this point. Right now, it looks like Boxer could take the top spot, but I haven't done any formal tabulating yet, so thats just based on looking at the lists. Interestingly enough, no one has the same #1.
A lot of you have taken lots of time to do your lists and I dig that. It's a pretty massive undertaking, so hopefully we get some more to make a complete list. Remember, the minimum is 20.
