How is Halloween (and I guess Goosebumps 2) the only horror movies coming out this month? How'd they fuck up this bad? Netflix has a couple spooky titles coming out like Haunting of Hill House (mini series, I know) and Gareth Evans new movie, Apostle. I’m excited for Halloween, Goosebumps and Suspiria as well so all these together make a pretty decent October run. I’m also seeing Hell Fest tonight but my expectations aren’t high.

01. Hellraiser (1987)
Couldn't wait to throw this on as soon as I got home from work. I've only seen this maybe three other times, and this was my favorite of them all. I was way more engaged and supremely creeped out. What stuck out the most was the truly dreadful score. The delivery of "Jesus wept" is hands-down the best part of this movie. Best Cenobite: Chatterer

It took me decades to finally watch that and when I finally did (like 5 years ago?) I was legit horrified and disturbed by the makeup and effects used. Grotesque is a good word for it. Not sure I care for the storyline but it's entertaining nonetheless.

1. The Omen (1976)Surprisingly a new to me film, something I enjoyed a lot. Love the focus on the eyes. Everything in this film works really well, especially the creepy ass kid and Gregory Peck. A couple of lulls but they didn't last long enough to justify trimming anything. Big fan of this one!

02. Hellbound: Hellraiser II (1988)
The fact that this basically starts with "Previously, on Hellraiser" is something I feel like I've seen before in the Halloween franchise - maybe II does that to recap the first one? Either way, it's goofy as hell but I love it. What I don't love is that this sequel feels like the same movie as the first one - something even more apparent when you watch them back to back. Hellraiser II is a lot harder to pay attention to, and lacks much of any purpose.

this is impossibly hard, but i guess at this exact moment:
nightmare on elm street the exorcist the thing friday the 13th part vi: jason lives mulholland drive routinely scares the bejsus out of me so i'm inclined to put that. otherwise,
halloween. phantasm
also, alien would be the best movie (but third scariest) if i were to include it, this is just so hard to categorize and rank

Thought this was an elegantly told and beautifully envisioned ghost story. Has a lot to say (sometimes very explicitly) about the role ghosts serve in our lives, but doesn't get bogged down in its ideas. The historical backdrop added a lot to both the themes and the stakes. Wasn't the scariest movie to kick off the month, but the ghost design is as eerie and striking as you'd expect from Del Toro.

03. The Devil's Backbone (El espinazo del diablo) (2001)Unsurprisingly, this film is GORGEOUS. A beautiful change of pace from my '80s camp wheelhouse. I'm still in the middle of this, watching it for the first time. I was very drunk the other night and started looking at cheap horror movies on the iTunes store on my phone - this was only $7.99 so I bought it. I'm extremely happy to own this. Disclaimer: I don't own the Criterion version, its just the cover I chose to post

House Videodrome Phantom of the Paradise Society Antichrist
This is a list of the best halloween season movies and also the best party movies. I have shown people Antichrist at 3 different parties and have retained all of those friends somehow

Not in my top 5, but a poorly received movie I thought was amazing during the delirious 4-6 a.m. stretch of an overnight marathon was "The Incredible Melting Man"

Texas Chainsaw Massacre is my #1. After that, probably Halloween, Rosemary's Baby (I know : /), Suspiria and Night of the Living Dead. Videodrome and House are great picks too.

Man I watched Rosemary's Baby a couple years ago hoping it wouldn't hold up so I wouldn't have to feel bad about thinking it's a good film and nope it's really good and it frustrates me.

1. The Cube
Had never seen this one before. It was very much a "hot couch" movie but the existentialism stuff was cool. Too bad there werent a few more cool kills

Fell asleep to this last night. Intended to watch the whole thing just because I like Wes Craven, and it's literally called "Wes Craven Presents They" - about 40 minutes in, I finally grabbed my phone to see what the fuck Wes Craven had to do with this movie, because it was hot trash. Nothing. He had nothing to do with the movie except he "presents" it, as if you walked into a video store and Wes Craven threw the movie at you. Chvrchbarrel presents: this movie sucks ass.
