are u a roth fan? imo him and rob zombie are really the only two original stylists we have working in horror rn it's crazy how much hate zombie is getting nowadays (idk if it's because of the music or halloween remakes) cause most of his original stuff has been fascinating at least if not legit fantastic It's because his first couple movies it was like "woah this guy has got some interesting tricks up his sleeve" and than after like 3 movies you realized "oh he only has 4 tricks"

Eli Roth's willingness to be problematic makes his movies more fun and campy and he's never self-serious which is fun. not sure i'd call him an original stylist he mostly just plays off of existing tropes and stuff. Cabin Fever is one of my favorite movies ever though even if its literally just a series of references.

Tonight I’m watching The Invitation, which is a movie I haven’t seen since it was in theaters in late 2015. I remember some parts of this but not much. I’m also having some nice scotch (Laphroaig 10 Year)

3. HellraiserHavent seen this shit in forever but it rules so much. The monster design universally rules and the story is surprisingly edgy while still being as campy as I remembered.

Imaginative and horrifying, but the first hour gets dulled by confusing motivations, obtrusive score and whatever Sean Chapman is doing. I'd love to see this movie with anyone else playing Frank. The last half hour is perfect, tense and gruesome, until the goofy final two demons. Counterpoint: the final two demons rule

Counterpoint: the final two demons rule I think I could have enjoyed them in another context but I thought they threw off the balance of campy and genuinely eerie that the main cenobites set.

06. The Loved Ones (2009)Took this suggestion from the Twitter thread that rango shared. It looked wacky and it ended up being really disturbing, or maybe I'm just bad with torture movies. Oh, and make no mistake - this is a torture movie.

Tonight I’m watching The Invitation, which is a movie I haven’t seen since it was in theaters in late 2015. I remember some parts of this but not much. I’m also having some nice scotch (Laphroaig 10 Year) Oh I forgot how much I liked this one. Seeing it in theaters was pretty neat. All I knew was that my friend told me it had gotten good reviews and we were going to go see it. We piled into the car and drove an hour and 15 minutes to the closest theater that was showing it. I was interested in the concept, but was starting to disengage from the film, and then the last 25 minutes happened and I was kinda blown away. I think calling this film a slow burn is a disservice to films that take their entire runtime to build up to an amazing end. This film takes it's time, sure, but sort of just explodes in the last 25 minutes. Not to be a hot couch guy (thanks rango) but I feel like they made a lot of mistakes during the end that I would not have made. I also respond poorly in crisis so that probably isn't very likely. Whatever. Anyways, I enjoyed this film a lot on a second viewing, especially 3 years removed from it. I would have given it 4 stars a few years ago but I think a solid 3.5 is where I'd place it. Enjoyable watch, good scotch. I'm happy with it.

07. Blood for Dracula (1974)Took this recommendation from bosma's list posted a-ways back. I just did a basic Google search for the movie and it popped up in full on YouTube, so I decided to just give it a go. It's...usually pretty gross (in a scummy, rapey way, not a horror way) due to the super perverted take on Dracula. But somehow, the whole thing is encased in hilarious comedy. I'm constantly reminded why I shouldn't be laughing, but I can't help it. The scene where Udo Kier vomits blood into the bathtub is true A+ however.

Yeah it's really bizarre like that and I probably should have given a better warning, though I saw it in late high school at some point and I don't remember there being that much rape so my apologies on that one.

only got around to Psycho last night but should be free ever night for the next 5 or 6 nights to binge hard on some more classics before diving into genre specific stuff.
im sure everyone in here already has Shudder but in case you dont, they just added a healthy dose of Carpenter and Hitchcock and i think if you sign up via amazon it's only $4.99 a month

That's alright! The weird and bizarre are some of the best to encounter on these month-long binges. Carnival of Souls and Vampire Circus were both like that in previous years (not rapey, just weird) blair witch 2 was so fuckin good?? wow texas chainsaw 3 tonight You know, I see this opinion a lot but don't really get it. What do you love about it? I guess you're supposed to treat it like a standalone movie and ignore that its called "Blair Witch 2" entirely? I just know the VHS cover always freaked me out in the video store

4. As Above, So Below
This was p entertaining if low impact. Had some good jump scares and some fun ideas. Wish the ending didnt just devolve into "theres a little bit o everything in this dang catacomb!"

I think I'll start that free trial on Monday and get what I can out of it. shudder is easily my favorite streaming service so far and is definitely worth the full membership, imo (i think a few different sites are offering promos that will extend your free trial to 30 days, if you want it) also if anyone wants quality commentary with their B horror films, definitely watch any of the Joe Bob Briggs series that are on shudder, amc, tnt, etc. he's fucking hilarious and an absolute savant of trash horror flicks

The only horror movies I watch aside from my "comfort food" (Nightmare, f13, etc) year-round are during these October marathons, so while I love the genre, the service doesn't have a ton of appeal for me.

Loses sight of itself by getting caught up in slapdash origin stories and a weird fixation on puzzles. You still get plenty of grotesquerie, but as the movie goes on the chills get undercut by the convoluted fantasy/adventure story. I respect the ambition to build the world, though, and it does produce some cool imagery.

if you guys haven't read any of Barker's novels, i definitely recommend it. he does a way more thorough job of explaining the cenobites' world and backstories.
consequently it makes them less scary cause you basically find out that they're rejected angels that have extreme BDSM fetishes, but it makes for better storytelling than the bulk of the movie sequels (II has some great imagery though, i agree)
