The only horror movies I watch aside from my "comfort food" (Nightmare, f13, etc) year-round are during these October marathons, so while I love the genre, the service doesn't have a ton of appeal for me. it also has a pretty great collection of sci-fi and thriller stuff as well. and they're getting more and more classic films (like i said, a good portion of hitchcock films just came out this week) understandably not for everyone but it's pretty much all i watch nowadays. I am also one of those "I'll do the free trial" guys and then I end up totally converted. Maybe the reason I don't watch any horror year-round is cause there's never any good options streaming!

5. The Loved OnesThis fucking ruled. Some great scares and violence without being over stylized to the point of not being upsetting. A really nasty movie

6. The Predator (2018)My expectations were so low that I actually thought this was pretty fun. Doesn't live up to its potential as a Shane Black movie but has a very low key late 80s/early 90s vibe without being kitchy. The whole "crew" were extremely 80s and good fun/well cast.

About 45 minutes into this movie I was extremely ready to call chvrchbarrel and rango babies and then the rest of the movie happened. Goddammmmmnnnn that was brutal. I loved it.

08. Poltergeist II: The Other Side (1986)I'm not sure how I managed to never see this, but it's odd to say the least. Despite the PG13 rating (which I'm sure Poltergeist would have had, had it come out later), it seems pretty kid-geared. A lot of the scare tactics barely even make sense to me because they're either aimed at such a different audience (the 'spooky supernatural' haunted stuff, 'creepy town-folk' etc all seems immature), or they're direct re-hashes of what worked well the first time. I know the first one was also a "kid-friendly" movie (even though it terrified tons of kids, myself included) but this sequel is dumbed down. With that being said, it's goofy fun in a Disney sort of way, watching Craig T Nelson play "cool dad" and of course Zelda Rubenstein: Ghost Take: "They're baaaaack!" makes me flinch harder than anything in this one.

7. The Devil's CandyThis was on its own pretty good but kind of a let down in comparison to "The Loved Ones". Had a couple interesting spins on the standard tropes but nothing fully pushed it past haunted house movie. Definitely a good watch though and had some legitimately disturbing stuff The kid in this movie has the same taste in metal music as the board tho.

I know aiming for 31 would be foolish, but I did watch this for the first time last night: I generally appreciate self-aware films, while also understanding that I can't fully appreciate the degree to which this was a very new and unconventional take at the time. Holds up well for the most part, and I had not had anything spoiled, so I was fully engaged and guessing up until the end.

Yep! Knew absolutely nothing going in, aside from the mask of the killer. It was really interesting reading the development history and how impactful it was on the overall course of the film and its story structure.

It is one of the most rewarding films for repeat viewings. There are just so many homages to other films in it, they're fun to catch.
-Billy "Loomis" -The school faculty member (janitor?) wearing a Freddy sweater -In the beginning, Casey's dad tells her mom to "Go to the McKenzies" which is ripped from Halloween -Linda Blair cameo

I was hoping to watch Event Horizon last night cuz it was one of the traumatic movies of Ashley’s childhood, but it wasn’t on any of the services.
Ended up hopping on the Hellraiser train since I hadn’t seen it, and really enjoyed it. All about the sci-fi and world-building aspects, and the pacing is so effective. Might check out the books.

8. Into The Dark: The BodyIt's cool there is going to be a low budget blumhouse movie every month but I have no idea how they decided that this should be the first one. This shit was so bad, just absolutely joyless and humorless and scareless with maybe 3 inspired moments in 85 minutes.

9. DollsThis movie rules. They should make more movies like this. Significantly creepier than Annabelle or whatever but crazy goofy too. I like how the Dolls didnt need to have like personas or whatever they are just some scary as shit dolls.

10. FrailtyA first time watch. Also an extremely hot couch movie but also really well made and pulpy and legit disturbing. Too bad Bill Pullman never really directed anything else other than that golf movie.

11. Hellbound: Hellraiser 2I think this was a first time watch? Altho maybe I saw it when I was a little kid. Regardless, this movie makes no sense and I had to check the wikipedia a couple times to make sure i didn't miss anything because it would feel like I had to but also this incredibly rules. The imagery is many times more insane than the first one. Definitely not as "good" or as scary but it really succeeds at staying full batshit and upping the batshit which is easier said than done.

12. The VVitchI didn't hate this and probably would've liked it more if I saw it in theaters but man something about low budget acting with the settler accents just makes me feel like im at a Medieval Times and its v hard to be scared while at a Medieval Times. Black Phillip fucking rules tho

Yes, when I said that Roth was extremely hit or miss for me and that I mostly just enjoy his concepts, I called him one of horror's remaining auteurs

Playing a bit of catch-up on what I've watched this weekend (was pretty internet-free) 09. Interview With the Vampire (1994)
I loved and loathed this all at once. Kirsten Dunst and Antonio Banderas were really spectacular, but I didn't really think Pitt had the "theatric" chops the movie was trying for, and Cruise was just hammy in it. BUT, it was occasionally fun and even freaked me out. One thing I will credit is the wardrobe, which was far more entertaining than the storyline and a real treat to watch throughout the film. First time watch for me - this seems like it would be a great read, so if anyone would recommend the Rice novel, let me know.

10. Scanners (1981)
HOW have I never seen this? This ruled. I was way more interested in the horror/sci-fi element than the mystery, which really takes over in the second act, but the final Scanner-showdown was sick.

Have some catching up to do - I was in a wedding this weekend without much free time, so this is only #4 for me. Loved the tone throughout - t he dreamy, uncanny atmosphere builds well without many bells or whistles. Didn't expect actual chills at first, but got a few by the end. It keeps you on your toes by dipping into both religious and psychological elements without totally embracing either, and the final "reveal" doesn't overexplain.
