Have some catching up to do - I was in a wedding this weekend without much free time, so this is only #4 for me. Loved the tone throughout - t he dreamy, uncanny atmosphere builds well without many bells or whistles. Didn't expect actual chills at first, but got a few by the end. It keeps you on your toes by dipping into both religious and psychological elements without totally embracing either, and the final "reveal" doesn't overexplain. I love this!!!

Playing a bit of catch-up on what I've watched this weekend (was pretty internet-free) 09. Interview With the Vampire (1994)
I loved and loathed this all at once. Kirsten Dunst and Antonio Banderas were really spectacular, but I didn't really think Pitt had the "theatric" chops the movie was trying for, and Cruise was just hammy in it. BUT, it was occasionally fun and even freaked me out. One thing I will credit is the wardrobe, which was far more entertaining than the storyline and a real treat to watch throughout the film. First time watch for me - this seems like it would be a great read, so if anyone would recommend the Rice novel, let me know. By far my favorite of the Anne Rice novels that I have read. She has a very specific style of writing though - pretty dense. Like, a description of a room can go on for a couple of pages. But, the book is great. I thought the movie did a pretty good job of following the novel. Agree about Cruise. Kirsten Dunst was incredible and I really liked Stephen Rea.

We were in a used bookstore the morning after watching the movie and I would've 100% picked it up if they'd had it, but they didn't. It seems like something I'll find at Half Price Books for a couple bucks.

I think I'mma get to 31 anyway but does Venom count as a horror movie? *like* for yes *rt* for no I'd say "no" categorically, but I always say you get to decide. Did it scare you beyond how bad it probably was? If a non-horror movie scares you, why can't that count? If a non-horror movie doesn't scare you, why bother.

14. Murder PartyThis is super fun. Homie clearly hated art school. Not as interesting as the movies that came after I guess but super inventive gore, physical comedy and great pacing

A lot of pieces I enjoyed but as a whole, a little disappointed. Still impressive for the time.

Amityville Horror was an example of a 70s horror movie that should be remade even tho they fucked it up

This was sooooo frustrating and dumb and the acting was SO bad. There were some elements that could have worked well but together it was jumbled and stupid.

13. Bride of Frankenstein (1935)
Better than the first? Maybe. I enjoyed watching the first one more, but this is clearly a better-developed film on all fronts. Sad that the Bride is reduced to the end of the movie. I guess they didn't just name stuff "Frankenstein 2" back then and had to call it something.

the first half when it is doing horror is so sick and then it transitions to an action movie and this dude 100% did not know how to direct that so it looks insane and i love it so much
i'm about to watch "monkey shines" because i need to chill out after the fucking "angst" movie which was too much

Maybe minor spoilers? I'm probably taking for granted that this movie is a big part of why explicit trope subversion and self-reference is so often the name of the game these days. So credit it's where it's due. Regardless, I liked this movie less and less as the satire took up more and more of the air. It works when it's used to tease victims, and less so when it starts defining every beat - it doesn't have enough bite to warrant that. Still, the playful mood carries you most of the way, and there are plenty of thrilling sequences.

Not to discredit your opinion, but you are spot-on with your assessment of how influential this movie was. For example, not that the Child's Play series was ultra-serious all the time, but they revived the franchise as a satire in direct response to Scream's success. I mean, look at the poster for crying out loud:

15. Jeepers Creepers (2001)
This starts relatively strong, and then just sort of unravels. I'm a fan of the early-'00s horror movies though, this one fits that bill as expected. Again, not sure how this escaped me at various movie nights throughout HS.
