Some actually awake musings: this fest was great and fun. I’m annoyed that B-52s weren’t on the main stage. Seemed like a super dumb decision and it was stupid crowded, but I still enjoyed the set. Jack White is the lamest motherfucker alive and I liked the Racs set a decent amount in spite of him rather than because of him. Village People were an odd booking choice but everyone seemed to have fun with it, Nick Lowe was amazing, and Guided by Voices kicked ass. I had never seen them before and was blown away.
My feet are swollen and sore and are not thrilled to be in dress shoes but it was well worth it for such a good weekend. Shoutout to mookie for the ticket hook up, Wretched for the couch hook up, and the rest of you folks for the good times hook up.

After only doing Saturday and Sunday I gotta say I miss 2-day music festivals. And while this fests has its issues (the same one year after year) it is mostly well run and the booking is top notch.

Yeah, despite the pile of free tickets, I'll still buy a 3 day as soon as they sell a cheap one. They can have my money.
I didn't miss skipping Friday too much either. No major complaints this year, except for how do they keep running out of Larceny at the main bars before Sunday night is over???
Favorite sets were Manchester Orch, Cursive, AM!, and Ganser. Cheesies and Pizanos pizza were some pretty decent food choices. And man, the food lines were horrible dinner time Saturday, but that was because I think Story So Far was the only band playing.

what a practically perfect weekend! great to see as many people as i did but y'all know i bounce around this fest a lot so im sure there's a few folks i missed. -was very glad that security was a breeze all 3 days (it was nice of them to have separate lines for bags/no bags but it kinda defeated the purpose to not have it explicitly called out so you had bag people in the no bag line getting moved around or throwing a fit cause they had to change lanes lol) -weather was really perfect. so perfect i got myself a nasty tanline friday cause i dont know how weather works anymore! minimal rain on sunday was kinda nice just to cool off -i thought they did a tremendous job taking care of the grounds, even making sure to put down woodchips and sand wherever it seemed too muddy or slippery -i do find $10 beers frustrating BUT it was a big upgrade to have goose island tallboys over dos equis and tecate again. sucks that they ran out of Riot Fest Sucks Pale Ale and Natural Villain so early in the weekend but im not surprised. the 25 oz silos were probably the way to go --food lines were so upsettingly shitty on friday that we didnt bother really eating at the festival again all weekend. i heard it got better saturday and sunday tho -layout was good again but a few really dumb scheduling choices made the Radicalz stage miserable (Village People and B-52's should've been on the Main stages and Bob Mould and Skating Polly could've been on the side stages.) glad to have wrestling back but ugh it's definitely the same shitty backdoor company from years prior and it's legitimately not safe or well thought out so you spend a lot of time just cringing and hoping no one gets seriously hurt. the firedancers and tall people were fun tho! -whatever argument they wanna make for the sound issues on Friday is horseshit imo. we've all been to festivals with high winds at some point and it never cuts out THAT badly. also the decibel limit can't be true because there were plenty of other sets that were loud as shit that day spread across all 5 stages. it just seems like whoever was doing sound for senses fail, violent femmes, blink 182, and a few other sets royally fucked up and RF and/or the bands aren't gonna mention it. also pretty much every band saturday and sunday sounded great so i just dont think there's a good excuse for the fuckups friday. -ubers on saturday were such a grotesque mess that we had to walk up past roosevelt to get one even remotely affordable enough to get to my apartment just so i could drive us to the metro. buses home on sunday were the way to go. - Xamnam and thebosma are the best guests ever EVEN IF THEY'RE ALWAYS TRYING TO START FIGHTS RAWR still easily the best chicago fest and my favorite weekend of the year

okay one more write up!
Friday:
-The Garden was fucking WEIRD. like i really dug it but idk how to explain what the fuck was going on. just a weird drum and bass duo who were doing a Faith No More meets Orwells dumbfuckery but much more self aware and hilarious
-Anti-Flag from the ferris wheel was really neat! good set from good people with good values
-Hot Water Music sounded so fucking good but i think chuck had blown his voice out the night before cause he didnt do most of the vocals and they skipped a few of the #hits cause he clearly didnt wanna sing
-Hot Snakes were great and im sad i had never seen them before but at least this was a good sounding set
-i was so excited to finally see Violent Femmes again (only other time was coachella 2013) and wow was i fucking deflated by the time i got close to 10:15 near the rail and realized how bad the sound was. i seriously gave up halfway through and left the park
-Hot Chip fucking rules. everything about that show was perfect -- besides the crowd. way too much of a brodeo. i dont even know why a lot of people were there since they just wanted to drink and talk for the whole set. regardless, the band killed it and we had a lovely dance party on the floor. the Beastie Boys cover is dope af. the new stuff is a hoot live.
Saturday:
- THE FUCKING HU. sweet merciful mongolian gods. that band is gonna be huge and they deserve it. that was a wildly perfect set.
-Cherry Glazerr was way tamer than the p4k set a few years ago. i wasnt super into it.
-drakulas was so goddamn dumb but pretty fun? idk i guess it's some dudes from rise against pretending to be goth so it was a solid 10 minute joke that just went on for too long
-Gwar was Gwar. they disemboweled trump. they gave caitlyn jenner an abortion. idk.
-Selecter sounded fantastic but fucking hell people, dance please. crowd was so dead even for the title track and james bond. was sad skanking by myself.
-Damned Things were meh. the last hit was good but the rest of the set didnt sound great to us and again the crowd was totally dead.
-Testament from the back sounded really good but same set they always do.
-Anthrax from the front sounded really good but same set they always do.
-ended up seeing all of Rise Against just because and it was really really fun. hits on hits and the crowd was going wild for it. much better than i expected in 2019
-Slayer was Slayer and idk im kinda glad it's over cause tom clearly can't do it (or doesnt want to) anymore. setlist was fine but honestly not what i wanted for a farewell show. also trying to throw shade at the fest for agreeing to an allotted time at a specific price point is a really tired hat in 2019 but of course tom tried to say they were getting kicked off even after they played the exactly same set that they've done everywhere else this tour, so he's full of shit.
-Against Me! doing Eternal Cowboy and New Wave is an all time emotional evening for me. i guess Pink Sweat$ got their own headlining show beforehand so they had to bump the AM show to starting really late. i think the doors opened at like 12:15 and Sincere Engineer played while people were coming in. AM went on at like 12:50.
Sunday:
-Dead Swords were so loud and so good. only played to like 10 people on a mainstage but it was worth getting in early for. definitely recommend to doom and shoegaze folks.
-White Reaper did their thing. it was fine.
-okay i personally didnt like the Village People set at all. they did what, 5 songs-ish? the dude spent the whole set reminding everyone he's the only original member and didn't sound very good. i get that it was a novelty booking but i didnt even really feel like laughing or dancing much.
-Ride was also really loud and really good!
-Against Me! doing Axl Rose and TDB was phenomenal. awesome crowd and the band is on a whole new level of energy and excitement right now. dunno if it's the new bassist or what but they're all having so much goddamn fun and Laura is really coming into her own as a badass frontwoman.
-B-52's crowd was insane. dunno if it was more for them or Ween campers, but still it was good wholesome seafood fun.
-had never seen Patti Smith before but she was phenomenal. far be it for me to ever judge a goddess musician like that, but i wanted less covers and more of her songs. but it looks like those covers are pretty standard things in her set so who am i to judge. it ruled regardless.
-okay Raconteurs were SO much better than i had hoped for in 2019. i've come around to liking the new album a bit and all those songs live fucking ripped. they fit in a ton of stuff from the first albums too so i was beaming from ear to ear. JW was honestly on good behavior -- the others clearly keep him reeled in and make sure they keep plowing through the setlist without his usual bantering horseshit. he was still clearly being a bit up his own ass but as long as he keeps moving through the setlist, i can deal with that. the other 4 guys did more than enough to make up for his tomfoolery. i had no idea Dean Fertita was gonna be able to tour with them this time either so that's neat!
-Bikini Kill was okay. i honestly dont know them very well but i enjoyed what we saw. wayyyyy bigger crowd than Jawbreaker or some other sunday headliners previously.
-Taking Back Sunday did their thing and it was nice but i still just wanna hear the hits from those albums mostly.
K I'M DONE LOVE YOU ALL BYE

-B-52's crowd was insane. dunno if it was more for them or Ween campers, but still it was good wholesome seafood fun. I ended up at Ween for a couple of songs, and it seemed like their crowd wasn't very big (The Starting Line/TBS crowds surprisingly seemed bigger). I think it was just that the majority of the crowd wanted to watch the B-52's, which makes sense, given that they are a legit legacy act that also fits the novelty act mold for a lot of people (and it was supposedly their last Chicago show).

There were Ween campers that inflated the B52s crowd - but halfway into the set or so it cleared up a bit. Still, they should have been on one of the main stages.
Ween had a pretty modest crowd, I walked through it on the way out.

It was very spread out...I guess Ween fans value personal space more than Blink fans, which was suffocatingly packed well past the soundboard.

I walked past a guy telling his friend that he got free tickets from the "Lollapalooza message board". I was gonna introduce myself but I was carrying a hundred pierogies and two beers.
Sorry, stranger.

first, big ups to Pale Hose for sunday. i avoided a car crash directly in front of the main entrance and hoped that it wasn't a harbinger for the day ahead. i made it in for nick lowe. as always, he was a delight. but once he turned it over to los straitjackets, i walked over to white reaper. then later on my friend said they only played two songs before lowe came back to finish the set. i should've stuck around. although, white reaper was perfectly acceptable. i then caught a few songs of the beaches. ride sounded fine, but they came off whiny. oh, you only got 40 minutes? sure, talk about it between every song. i guess i understand why they were on a main stage, but less than jake had a way bigger crowd. sincere engineer was good. something about their singer's voice reminded me of sarah shook. what i caught of against me was good, though did they end pretty early? i only caught 4-5 songs and expected to hear more. the b-52s were fun. they were one of my more anticipated sets. crowd near me for them was great, except for being in the smoking section. teenage bottlerocket was their usual. someone hit kody right in the chest with a beer - probably the best arm of the day for chucking things on stage. i caught the last 3 songs of patti smith's set and was content with that. i watched a little bit of the raconteurs. they sounded bad from where i was standing. the set i saw at all points east was way better. i hiked over to the ergs for a few songs and then back for bikini kill. they're one of those bands who i always heard more about than actually hearing their music. so i'm not too familiar with their songs. they sounded fine for a reunion. but kathleen hanna's brief diatribe about this country only being for rich people was sort of ridiculous since her household net worth is probably the most of any riot fest performer this year.
