John Kezdy, lead singer of early Chicago punk band, The Effigies, died at Evanston Hospital yesterday after a collision in Glencoe when he was riding his bike in a non-protected bike lane on Sheridan Road, and there was a collision with an Amazon truck that was illegally parked in the bike lane.
I went to high school w/ the drummer of the band, and I know a lot of other people who are horrified by this death.
John was the older brother of Pierre, who played in Pegboy, Strike Under, and Naked Raygun, and who died from cancer in 2020.

She and Dave Coulier (of Full House) hosted 'America's Funniest People', a similar 'funny stuff on camera' short-lived show that followed 'America's Funniest Home Videos' Sunday nights on ABC back in the early 90's. Young zircona1 used to stick around for it after AFV/The Simpsons. Didn't know about the Harley Quinn success, good for her.

you gotta be sober for 6 mos to get considered for a liver transplant. apparently mr. harwell didn't have friends and family that could help him guarantee that.

I actually still unironically listen to some songs from Astro Lounge. I just had “Who’s There” on in the car the other day. Astro Lounge would’ve been one of the first CDs I ever owned. I eventually had to get another copy because I’d scratched up my first one so much.
Also, do certain albums remind anyone of particular video games? Astro Lounge always puts scenes from Crash Bandicoot: Warped in my head because of how much I listened to it while playing that. Another one would be thinking of Ratchet & Clank most times I hear any of the Green Day singles that were on International Superhits.

Songs that were in sports games between 2003 and 2007 is a whole musical genre in my head Also most of the Tony Hawk soundtrack is still tied to those

Idk if this is the right space/place, but what is with 90s bands and shamelessly touring without the original lead singer? Smash Mouth has - unbeknownst to me - been doing it for years. Alice In Chains, Sublime, and (most egregiously IMO) Blind Melon. I guess they still got bills to pay.

The others have been pretty egregious acting like it's still the original band Though also had I not read the article about Smash Mouth replacing the singer a while back and caught like a 2 PM set at Lolla, which is probably the way I'd see them if I ever did, I'd probably not even notice

Alice In Chains, Sublime, and (most egregiously IMO) Blind Melon. I guess they still got bills to pay. This isn't isolated to 90s bands, there are plenty of examples of acts that continue to tour without their lead singer (Journey, Foreigner, Lynyrd Skynyrd, and Foghat are some other examples). Dead & Company might not have used the Grateful Dead name, but they are/were more or less doing it as well. I don't begrudge these musicians for going out and making money, even though I'm generally not interested in seeing what are essentially cover bands pretending to be the real thing. It's worth noting that with almost all of these examples, the band's draw without original prominent members is significantly diminished. Still, there seems to be enough people who are willing to pay good money to see them that they continue to go out and tour regularly. FWIW regarding Alice In Chains: Jerry and Lane were essentially co-lead singers. They each took the lead on different songs and had lots of harmonies as well. They also have the rest of their "classic" lineup in tact, which is more than some of these other bands can say (I will admit, William Duvall won me over when I saw them opening for GnR during the original reunion tour).

Yea I hear this, I think it just surprises me to see this happening to relatively “young” bands, as opposed to groups from the 70s. Maybe I just need to re-evaluate my standards for what constitutes an “old” band. But like it would be super weird if something happened to, like, Paul Banks, and Interpol just hired a sound-a-like and carried on. Random example but it feels like a practice that’s more acceptable for 90s bands than 00s. Fortunately, there hasn’t been many test cases for the latter. Just a random thought that struck me today. RIP SH, Astro Lounge rules. As did his tweets shitting on the Oakland A’s management.
