RIP to Richard Davis, the legendary jazz bassist. If you're on this Board, you've 100% heard him on one record or another. That's him on "Meeting Across The River" on Born to Run. He was also the session bandleader and appears all over Astral Weeks. He also, of course, played on a bunch of incredible 60s-70s era jazz records. This includes one of my favorites of all time - Davis was the last living member of the tragically short-lived Dolphy/Little combo that recorded at the Five Spot in 1961. He also cut Out to Lunch with Dolphy three years later. Davis was 93.

Charlie Robison, a semi-independent country singer-songwriter, who played / headlined the Taste Stage at the Chicago Country Music Festival part of Taste of Chicago in 2001, and who had three children with Dixie Chick Emily Erwin, and one with his second wife, died in San Antonio today, six days after his 59th birthday. He was the older brother of country musician Bruce Robison, and his former sister in law was country singer Kelly Willis.

A couple losses this week in the world of sorta unhip (but actually awesome) 60s music. First, Terry Kirkman, lead singer of The Association passed away at 83. Very schmaltzy multi-part harmony group that scratch that eerie nostalgia itch for me. Produced by Curt Boettcher, one of the progenitor's of sunshine pop.

And yesterday David McCallum passed away at 90. Most famous as an actor (The Man from UNCLE, Ducky from NCIS), but he also made a string of albums in the mid-60s featuring songs he conducted or composed. These got sampled a bunch, including this one here - immediately and obviously recognizable as "The Next Episode" - check it out:

I don't care if it's schmaltzy, I still like this song, Windy, and Along Comes Mary.

Dj Teri Bristol, who has had some health problems in the last few years, has died. She DJ'd Smart Bar a lot in the 1980's and 1990's, and I assume she had many other gigs around the US and the world.

Wishing every one who was complicit in having her serve out this term and die in office a very rot in hell. I obvs didn’t agree with her on many things, but she deserved some fucking dignity.

Burt Young. Lots of good movies, but he was great in Back to School.

saw Twilley and his band at Mississippi Nights nightclub on Laclede's Landing in Saint Louis in 1984. I can't find a setlist or an exact date (other than it was some time after Sab played Kiel in February, and before Helen Reddy, Glen Campbell, and Tom T Hall played the VP Fair in early July).
A band called Turning Curious opened, who today I found out was from Champaign, and had Mitch Easter produce their power pop REM-soundalike EP. The members moved on to other C-U bands; the lead vocalist and the drummer have since also died.
Also, retrospective articles about Beatle Bob say that although he used to dance around at other things, Bob got the idea to make a career out of dancing by himself when he saw a pal dance by himself at a Saint Louis Twilley show. It does not specify that the MS nights show was that show, but it is highly probable.
