Damn, I still remember how back in 94 all I ever wanted for Xmas was the Superunknown CD. Sad sad news, the soundtrack of my high school

Badmotorfinger will always be my favorite but i didn't give Superunknown its credit (mostly cause of "Black Hole Sun"'s overplay factor) until much later and now it's got some of my favorites ("Let Me Drown," "Mailman," "4th of July")
i always find Ultramega OK getting overlooked too. "Smokestack Lightning" and "Beyond the Wheel" are fucking great.

never saw Soundgarden back in the 90's, and saw Arcade Fire at Lolla 2010. I did end up seeing them in Vancouver and at The Gorge on July 29-30/2011. Cool_name and I picked up Hansford and Sutton in Seattle and went out to The Gorge with them...good times. The day after we flew to Chicago for McCartney at Wrigley and Lolla 2011 the next weekend.

Super haunting that he sang a refrain from "In My Time of Dying" during their last song last night

Super haunting that he sang a refrain from "In My Time of Dying" during their last song last night I thought so too but it wasn't the first time he had done it so that changes the impact a bit.

I only just heard about Chris Cornell. So fucking sad. Just saw them for the first time on Wednesday. One of my first favorite bands.

This is such a colossal bummer. Soundgarden was the first band my brother showed me when I was a kid; they were my introduction to real music.
This has been met with scoffs when I've expressed this opinion over the years, but I genuinely think he was the greatest rock singer of all time.

He's definitely in the upper echelon - depending on how tightly you characterize "rock". If you exclude metal guys like Dio and Halford the list is even smaller. Plant, Daltrey, Mercury and the GOAT Geoff Tate... maybe a few others

Cornell fronted 3 bands that were all extremely successful, and he was successful as a solo artist as well. I can't think of any other front men who can make that claim, he's definitely up there.

Dude could hit notes in any genre. Solo stuff was pretty eclectic. He's fairly unique.
I'm sure most will not love this comparison, but I've always held Weiland and Cornell as the best frontmen of the last 30 or so years. Weiland was probably a bit more underrated because of his issues.

I have no issue with prime Tyler being in the discussion on pure vocals. Obviously Steve Perry too.
If we're talking pure frontmen live I would easily put Weiland over Cornell. Weiland was always amazing just on pure presence - wasted or not.

Chris Cornell's wife issued a statement that he was taking prescription medication for anxiety which has "paranoid or suicidal thoughts" as a side effect at high dosages. She says she spoke to him the night he died and that he said he may have taken an extra pill, which was why she called for someone to check on him :/
