The higher the malt content/ABV of a beer, the better the chances the flavors will preserve or enhance. For IPAs, double IPAs, some saisons, or other hoppy ales, my experience is that they do fine with some time if refrigerated.
Odds are if you leave something like Lizard King in a cupboard or something, it’ll lose the brightness/bitterness and you’ll be left with a sweeter beer and more of the hop residue (pine!) than actually balanced flavor.

Fun/sad story: my brother became obsessed with Russian River after visiting the brewery several years back and purchased several cases of Pliny the Elder. He drank maybe two bottles and held onto the rest. I received one as a gift two years after he purchased it and it's one of the worst beers I've ever tasted.
Fresh ones are clearly amazing, but follow teek's rules and don't age hoppy beers.

I generally only hold onto stuff that is barrel aged, but even that isn't a steadfast rule. Lactose is sometimes used in those beers and can impact taste if you don't drink it immediately.

Triple post: I'm brewing beer for the first time since kiddos came around next weekend. My brother is going to be in town and we're getting cigars. I'm very excited. Hunting down recipes tomorrow.

I would like to point out that this is not intentional beer aging and more of an “oops I found this beer in the fridge I guess I’ll drink it”

Sorry I beer geeked.
IPAs are kind of iffy if they sit for more than 90 days, generally. The REALLY hoppy stuff needs to be consumed within like 2 weeks. Mostly if the label says something like DRINK FRESH you should definitely do that.

I had an 8 year old Dogfish Head 120 Minute Double IPA over the weekend and it didnt even taste like an IPA. Was smooth with hardly any bitterness and went down like a strong ale or slight barleywine. With was very good.
Also, uncle sent me something called Nut Sauce by Blue Earl outta Delaware that I...well... busted out last night. Choclate/Peanut Butter imperial stout that legit tasted like alcoholic Reeses at 14% abv. Apparently they clogged up their machines with how much pb they used. Practically a meal in a can as its gotta be like 600 calories. Needless to say it was a sipper over a few hours.

Tbf the "fresh" version of 120 Minute doesn't taste much like an IPA either.

Scoots is it hard to make beer? My current fermentation project is making me want to try more but I am extremely scared of accidentally poisoning myself

Nah it's not difficult. Recipes are generally pretty easy to follow as long as you stick to the timing required and keep all of your utensils clean. If you have a bad batch that either means you didn't measure ingredients properly (which generally makes for an okay tasting beer but nothing along the lines of what you planned) or you accidentally introduced some outside bacteria by not keeping everything clean (which can be undrinkable).
Bottling is a pain in the ass, though.

This is good to know, I know there’s a decent upfront cost so I’ll probably wait for a few more batches of garlic honey and ginger beer before I get into the real stuff

Randomly found a 4-pack of Bodem while out and about today. Half Acre availability here is very inconsistent and generally only Pony and Daisy Cutter, so this was a lovely discovery.

Half Acre: Beginning today, we welcome you back into the beer garden at Balmoral. Along with the updated procedures below, we've distanced all tables, will be operating cashless with a digital menu and using compostable cups. We look forward to having you back on campus. -Reservations are 90 minutes, limited to seated guests in parties up to six people. -All guests will be required to wear a face mask when not seated at their table. -Reservations are weather dependent, we will call to cancel your reservation when inclement weather is expected. -We are currently 21+ only and are not able to welcome dogs or children. -You may purchase beer to take home at the end of your reservation. -We are not currently serving food or allowing outside food....and there's a $15.45 reservation fee

The reservation $15.45 goes towards your bill & if you get rained out, it turns into a credit to the bottle shop. I think that's a pretty fair system.

My friend's bachelor party was supposed to be this weekend, but now we're just getting together for a day in someone's backyard for some socially distant beers. He has lived out of state for the past few years & is involved w/ the Denver beer scene.
Any recommendations/favorite Chicago(land) only beers I should bring? Planning on picking up some middlebrow, something from Half Acre's wyld series, and want to grab a couple more 4/6packs.

The Off Color "Beer For" series has been pretty great for outside drinking this summer. Can't go wrong with anything from Whiner for interesting but not like Marz level out there canned saisons/sours if you want to impress someone with something that might not be in Denver.

Alarmist's Le Jus won the 2018 GABF gold medal for Hazy/Juicy IPA. It is one of my favorite beers.

Haven't had since shorty after it won and remember thinking it had changed a little bit. Seems like a good time to pick some up. Also have been meaning to check out the Beer For series from Off Color. Lot of interesting stuff going on in those.

Begyle charges $10 for a reservation and does not give you any sort of credit for it, so it's not unprecedented.

If you're looking for something unique to bring to Denver, try Hop Butcher if you can find it anywhere. Your Wish Is Granted just came out today and was brewed about two days ago. It's a double IPA.

Pipeworks, Hopewell, Spiteful everywhere else. I like Miskatonic and Brickstone in the burbs. Destihl if you wanna go pinky out
