Pitchforks Tracks lists have always been packed with popular radio stuff. Check their older lists.

it is so fuckin sick that the 1975 have become the thing that will finally tear this board apart

I can't believe a boring M83 track is in the #1 spot.

Having not listened to them and having no plans to, I am far more annoyed by the discussion of said band than anything they have actually done.

Overall I didn't think the songs list was bad (especially in the 60s to 10s).
But I do take issue with omitting Father John Misty, Parquet Courts, Frankie Cosmos and Hop Along. Definitely shocked by the first two omissions.

Questioning people’s musical taste is beyond stupid. We could just turn into total fucking insanity like inforoo, if you wanted. I only lurk there but Jesus Christ Seriously It’s approaching Reddit levels of awfulness

Guys the bigger issue is that ‘Shallow’ made the list.

Irv and I are already feuding because he gave The Adventures of Buckaroo Banzai Across the 8th Dimension 2 stars on letterboxd

Only take I have for y'all today is that the 1975 is good, but their last album was better than this one

thoughts:
Shouts out 1 and 2
Jon Hopkins at 16 and Koze at 3 were really surprising.
Glad Deafheaven, Iceage, and Sleep all made it for some heavier stuff.
Glad that overly monotonous snoozefest YOB album didn't make it.
Shouts out Adrianne Lenker.
I don't get Robyn. Lyrics are meh and aside from the two singles all the other tracks are meh. Maybe I'll come around to it but this seems to be a trend with all these Nordic pop singers singing in English.
That Sheck Wes album is absolute garbage and I will never understand the appeal. Dude can barely rap and his "singing" is painfully tone deaf. He sounds like he's trying to be a less catchy Chief Keef.
Some BNM Omissions:
Saba with an 8.7 didn't make it (he's always sounded like a Chance copycat to me).
Car Seat Headrest with an 8.6. Maybe because it's a rerecording though. Also album has way too much pointless downtime that he could have cut.
Tim Hecker with an 8.5, though the album was way out there and far less engaging than his previous few.
Father John Misty with an 8.5 - His stuff's been on a decline for me and it just seems like he crawled up his own butt lately. Was odd that Pitchfork basically said this in a track review for the album then gave it BNM
Mount Eerie at 8.5 despite his 11 minute mopefest song making their tracks list - Always hated the angle of exploiting your dead wife for bigger gigs/better reviews and to marry a Hollywood star. Like “boo hoo my wife is dead for two albums and less than two years later I’m married to a famous actress.” I love Microphones but this just rubs me the wrong way
Jean Grae & Quelle Chris - Everything's Fine with 8.4 - I appreciated what they're doing but nothing about this appealed to me. It just seemed like a bunch of inside jokes between the two of them and some surface level critics of other rappers
Jeff Tweedy - Warm 8.3 - It’s fine but also could have just been a fleshed out Wilco album.
Joey Purp - Quarterthing 8.3 - I like his energy but a lot of this just seemed like him copying/riffing off of other rapper’s songs and it seemed lazy.
The Carters - Everything is Love - Did anybody even remember a single track that wasn’t “Apeshit?” I certainly don’t
Lucy Dacus (not BNM) - How did her album not make it but that Boygenius ep did? Her album is so much better.

It definitely makes the BNM accolade seem less important. I think it's a decent list overall tho. Some surprises. I'm guessing they'll do a top 20 rock, top 20 rap, etc like they've been doing.

Good list actually. Great top 5. Makes sense.
Once again, shocked FJM didn't make this or the songs. And Parquet and Dacus seemed like 7.somethings that could make this.
Crazy Beach House got a 9.1 then ended up #20.

So Cardi was put in the "Pantheon of Great Rappers" after her debut album, but P4K then puts like 5 better rap albums ahead of her? lol.

So here's the website I write for's list: soundblab.com/lists/21260-albums-of-the-year-2018Obviously a lot of similarities, but this was a huge undertaking for myself. I had little help on the content, tabulating, etc. I wrote a lot of the descriptions. Pretty happy with the overall list, but next year, if I'm still on this site, I'll be making some massive changes.
