What cards are you guys using for points? I need to get in that game. Chase Sapphire Reserve. It's one of the best decisions I've ever made. You get 50,000 points to start ($750 in buying power). Opened one each in summer 2016. We've gone to Italy and about to go to Chile without paying for a flight. 3x points on all restaurants, bars and travel (counting Uber/Lyft).

When I signed up it was 100,000 points to start, and I accrue so many points from bars/restaurants/ubers/hotels. I haven't paid for a flight in a really long time.

ive got one too. how do you guys redeem the points for flights? i hear the chase portal gets you the 1.5x bonus, but i've also heard flights are often more expensive there then on like kayak or whatever. do you transfer points to airline-specific rewards programs or have you had luck through the chase portal?

Damn, I went the wrong route with my credit card. Although I don't really use it enough to rack up rewards points.

I almost exclusively transfer them to Southwest and book through them. That has been the best return per point for me.

It's a hefty annual fee ($450), but I think once we start traveling again I may go with that card. Plenty of great perks.

I use the Chase portal. I would not say it's more expensive at all on average. Honestly, I've found cheaper/different options there plenty. Saved $200 on the flight to Santiago.

Unless I'm reading this wrong you only get the 50,000 bonus points if you spend $4,000 in the first three months of opening an account.

That's how all credit cards work. They don't just give you points.

Plus they paid for my TSA Precheck/Global Entry ($100). That plus the signup bonus covered the actual $150 fee for like ten years.

CPF knows what he's talking about. The Sapphire Reserve is the best pound for pound credit card out there IMO. Mrs. Pale Hose and I paid for all of our flights and hotels on our trip to Spain using the reward points (we both got the 100k point sign up bonus).
In addition to all the perks previously mentioned, you also get free airport lounge access at almost every airport in the world. It's amazing.

Sometimes it's better to transfer to one of the partner airlines (Southwest, United, Air France etc), but usually I've found it's a better deal to use the 1.5x travel bonus to book directly through the Ultimate Rewards (Chase) website. You have to check and see every time, but it's worth it IMO. Either way you're getting a deal.

I have a Chase Sapphire Preferred, though I'm thinking about upgrading it to the Reserve. But I definitely at least recommend the Preferred if the annual fee scares you, though the Reserve is worth it if you travel much at all
I've so far just redeemed through the Chase portal and I've never found it to be overly expensive. Haven't used it a ton though

Anyone with only the Preferred wanting to get another bonus should downgrade that to a Freedom (regular or unlimited, both have $0 annual fee) and then open up a Reserve, you'll get another 50k points.
Whereas if you just upgrade a Preferred to a Reserve, you won't get the points bonus.

this is the weirdest turn a thread has ever taken.
and i'm including the time that the old pitchfork thread turned into a conversation about literally butts.

AMEX Platinum for me and mrs ten15. The free monthly Uber credits alone take care of 75% of the fee. Also, pay for precheck, give us status at hotels, Centurion Lounge access at airports. And those AMEX only presales.
Also, they have a killer travel group that books hotels and often gets unpublished perks like room upgrades or free breakfast/drinks credits, etc.

I actually just put in for the United Club credit card because my work pays for the annual fee for that after having been here for a year (they'll pay for that or just a United Club membership instead of the card but the card has a few nice extra perks). I wouldn't normally get it but the bonus miles are gonna be awesome and probably pay for my vacation this next year, and most airports ive been to have a United Club so I'm excited about that.

I really hope this fest happens again. Good balance of new, popular acts for the kids, established acts for the grownups, and experimental stuff for the weirdos.
