So, monasterymonochrome kinda hit it out of the park last month. I decided that I would have to think of a good theme for when I get his name. Little did I know it would be this soon. Since he is a history guy, I thought I would provide a slight historical retrospective of power pop, one of my favorite genres. Not too surprising, I suppose given my love of The Beatles. Pete Townsend was the first to use the term when describing The Who’s “Pictures of Lily”. Power pop enjoyed some strong popularity throughout the 1970s until The Knack released its mega hit “My Sharona”, which caused a huge backlash against the genre, given its ubiquitousness. However, there were some notable power popacts in the 80’s and 90’s including The Smithereens, and one of my all time favorite bands, Material Issue. The playlist is kinda/sort of in chronological order. I avoided some of the biggest hits/obvious choices from some of the groups to make it more interesting. The name comes from a Steve Albini quote when he was asked about power pop. Hope you enjoy. I present This Music is for Pussies and should be Stopped1. The Who - Puctures of Lily 2. The Shoes - Happiness Is In This Beat 3. Big Star - In The Street 4. Badfinger - No Matter What 5. Raspberries - I Wanna Be With You 6. Utopia - Love in Action 7. (The) Sweet - Fox on the Run 8. Cheap Trick - Oh, Candy 9. Dave Edmunds - Deborah 10. Nick Lowe - Shake and Pop 11. The Knack - Good Girls Don’t 12. The Nerves - Hanging on the Telephone 13. The Romantics - She’s Got Everything 14. The Spongetones - She Goes Out with Everybody 15. Marshall Crenshaw - Someday, Someway 16. The Plimsouls - A Million Miles Away 17. The Smithereens - A Girl Like You 18. Jellyfish - The King is Half-Undressed 19. Material Issue - Li’l Christine 20. Beach Slang - Nothing Can Change You (Tommy Keene cover)

Kings Go Forth - Don’t Take My Shadow 6. Violent Femmes - Gone Daddy Gone 7. Jungle Rot - Pumped Full Of Lead 8. Volcano Choir - Island, IS 9. Garbage - Only Happy When It Rains 10. Zola Jesus - Sea Talk 11. Scallops Hotel (milo) - Bought My Kid A High Chair 12. Die Kreuzen - Rumors 13. Steve Miller Band - Jet Airliner 14. Plasticland - Alexander 15. The Promise Ring - Why Did We Ever Meet 16. Bon Iver - Towers Listening to this while sitting in beltline traffic on my commute to work felt extremely Wisconsin. Thank you teekoh. I’m excited to listen to the last segment of this. I knew a surprising number of these songs and I like most of them (though I don’t see myself getting into Jungle Rot or Steve Miller Band) Another fun fact about this playlist, when I was a kid I thought the lyrics to Jet Airliner were “Big old Chad Adolina” and I was always like “wow way to call out their one fat friend” and this playlist brought that memory back so thank you teekoh

Hey neader, this is for you. You're always bitching (like all the time, it's the only thing you actually do around here consistently) about acts coming to your shitty racist state. So... I did some digging on local artists. Book one of these local rappers for your next pity party. There's apparently a rap "supergroup" called the Justice League, and some of these folks belong to it, hence overlap. Also threw in some singer songwriters since for an entire year straight your only post was "omg julien baker." Track list for Neadful Things1. Floating Action - Don't Stop Loving Me Now 2. Deniro Farrar - Trap Hall of Fame 3. Andy The Doorbum & Justin Aswell - It's relative 4. Edgar Allen Floe - The Righteous Way to Go 5. Banknote Mitch - New King of the South 6. Kate & 9th Wonder - Soul Dojo 7. Khrysis - All About It 8. Ski Beats/Locksmith/Mac Miller - Time Goes 9. King Mez - MF+G 10. The Away Team - UpNAtem 11. 9th Wonder & L.E.G.A.C.Y. - Third Person 12. Gina Taree - Picnic 13. Arsena Schroeder - So Many Plans 14. The Songbird Raven - Why Ain't You Under My Tree

I was pleasantly surprised by a lot of it. Some silly ass names in there, but the talent is there. I picked up vibes of Talib Kweli on some of this stuff.

My playlist is for sleeping, and my theme is Natural Disasters. I knew I wanted to start it with "Natural Disaster" by Marian Runk, my favorite local artist, and I knew that I wanted the centerpiece to be "Vesuvius" by Sufjan. Filling in the gaps outside of those two was a fun journey. Hope you like it! Natural Disasters
1.) Marian Runk - "Natural Disaster" 2.) This Is The Kit - "Earthquake" 3.) Beck - "Earthquake Weather" 4.) MS MR - "Hurricane" 5.) Regina Spektor - "Tornadoland" 6.) Neko Case - "Middle Cyclone" 7.) Jonsi - "Tornado" 8.) Sufjan Stevens - "Vesuvius" 9.) Sharon Van Etten - "Tornado" 10.) Zola Jesus - "Avalance" 11.) Andrew Bird - "Natural Disaster" 12.) Eleanor Friedberger - "Early Earthquake" 13.) Mercury Rev "Coney Island Cyclone" 14.) Fruit Bats - "The Earthquake of '73" 15.) Neil Young and Crazy Horse - "Like a Hurricane (Live)"

I decided to put in some work on my playlist today and got it to a spot I'm comfortable with. Half the songs have been on the playlist since 2/1, the other half has changed constantly. My person this month is pigs and we all know he loves Modest Mouse, but what else does our Pigs love? Well, last year cracked open the piggy bank for the Smashing Pumpkins tour, so I had that to go off of - there's some shoegaze toward the end that I attribute to the Pumpkins' rabbit hole. I also ran into quite a few 2019 tracks that I really like over the past few weeks, and wanted to incorporate those. The result of all of this is just a "all these songs sound good together" playlist, but it does draw from those few influences. Definitely flows through a few different feels, but hopefully it does so with grace. I'd like an honest take on this one - I don't know TOO much about what you like, but this was fun to put together! Hard For a Rich GirlFor: Pigs 01. Sharon Van Etten - Seventeen 02. Stars - Elevator Love Letter 03. American Football feat. Hayley Williams - Uncomfortably Numb 04. The Hotelier - In Framing 05. The Cowboys - Now With Feeling 06. Julia Jacklin - Pressure to Party 07. Jade Bird - I Get No Joy 08. Maggie Rogers - Retrograde 09. Stephen Malkmus - Viktor Borgia 10. Broken Social Scene - All I Want 11. Drop Nineteens - Winona 12. Panda Riot - Golden Age 13. School of Seven Bells - When You Sing

Hey zircona1, here's a playlist for you. I saw Sharon Van Etten the other night, and she did and incredibly moving Sinead O'Connor cover, so it got me thinking I should compile some of my favorite covers for this whole little project. Here's some of my recent and overall favorites - I tried to avoid the ones that everyone knows of or that would be on a "HERE ARE THE BEST COVERS OF ALL TIME" lists, so hopefully some of these are new to you. It's a little more low-key, but it's winter and that's just the mood I'm in. Hope you enjoy! It's Been Coveredfor: zircona 1. Chris Thile - Heart In A Cage (Strokes cover) 2. Sturgill Simpson - In Bloom (Nirvana cover) 3. King Princess - I Know (Fiona Apple cover) 4. Sondre Lerche - Wrecking Ball (Miley Cyrus cover) 5. Soccer Mommy - I'm On Fire (Bruce Springsteen cover) 6. Seu Jorge - Life On Mars? (David Bowie cover) 7. Alkaline Trio - Metro (Berlin cover) 8. LCD Soundsystem - (We Don't Need This) Facist Groove Thang (Heaven 17 cover) 9. Rihanna - Same Ol' Mistakes (Tame Impala cover) 10. First Aid Kit - Walk Unafraid (REM cover) 11. Ty Segall - Every 1's a Winner (Hot Chocolate cover) 12. Sylvan Esso/Collections of Colonies Of Bees - Funeral Singers (Califone cover) 13. The Decemberists - I'm Sticking With You (Velvet Underground cover) 14. The White Stripes - I Just Don't Know What To Do With Myself (Dusty Springfield cover) 15. Elliott Smith - Thirteen (Big Star cover)

chvrchbarrel you’re great at curating soundtracks to critically acclaimed Netflix original series about some dude who falls in love like an idiot that people absolutely love for some reason that I can’t figure out I can’t figure out if I’m missing a reference or if I don’t remember several of these songs being in Master of None or if you just liked / didn’t like the playlist. But I’m here to find out.

Your turn, @timbo!
So, the PNW is a big part of my life right now. My best friend of like 20 years moved to Portland with her husband about a year ago, and I’ve been visiting them frequently. They’re in town this week, and we were discussing strip clubs at dinner. Strip clubs are a major part of Portland. For those who don’t know, they don’t have the stigma that they do here in the Midwest; they’re more like a replacement for bars. Whenever I visit, we end up going to a couple each night we’re in actual Portland.
I found some shitty list of “the best 17 strip clubs in Portland” online, and together the three of us found a song that not only captures the vibe of each place, but would actually be played there (or in some cases, songs that one of us got a dance to).
1. Union Jacks: The White Stripes - “The Union Forever” 2. Sassy’s: TLC - “No Scrubs” 3. Club 205: Ringo Deathstar - “Two Girls” 4. Dv8: The Who - “Pinball Wizard” 5. Rose City: Sleater-Kinney - “Light Raul Cayote” 6. Mary’s Club: Hope - “Doll Parts” 7. Lucky Devil: The Velvet Underground - “Ferrtboat Bill” 8. Acropolis: Massive Attack - “Angel” 9. Casa Diablo: Ella Fitzgerald - “Get Thee Behind Me Satan” 10. Devil’s Point: Def Leppard - “Pour Some Sugar On Me” 11. Club Rouge: Nicki Minaj, 2 Chainz - “Beez In The Trap” 12. Dancin’ Bare: Sylvan Esso - “Just Dancing” 13. Hawthorne Strip: Kurt Vile - “Dust Bunnies” 14. Safari Show Club: Animal Collective - “My Girls” 15. Kit Kat Club: Tom Waits - “Chocolate Jesus” 16. Pussycats: iAmMosho - “Cat Drip” 17. Golden Dragon: Anti-Flag - “Drink Drank Punk”

This month's selection goes to andrewvb . I know you like some left-of-center music - I think you and I are two of the only people on this board who like Ariel Pink - so, here's a mix of weirdo/experimental (mostly) pop songs. The title comes from a Ween lyric. Enjoy! 1. Guttersnipe - Loaded From Vector Trap 2. Gary Wilson - You Keep on Looking 3. Half Japanese - One Million Kisses 4. Ween - Object 5. Dr. Octagon - Earth People 6. ILL - Space Dick 7. U.S. Maple - Home-Made Stuff 8. Frank Zappa/Mothers of Invention - Prelude to the Afternoon of a Sexually Aroused Gas Mask 9. The Soft Boys - Old Pervert 10. Need New Body - Show Me Your Heart 11. John Maus - Running Man 12. Screamin' Jay Hawkins - Hong Kong 13. The Bitter Tears - Frank, U.P., and the Monkey 14. Brainiac - I Am a Cracked Machine

I'll be honest, I didn't care for most of the songs - every time I hear My Girls I like it less and less - tho major props for that underrated VU cut. Another View gets such little love, and while it doesn't compare to their immaculate 4 LP run, it's got some good stuff on it. Interesting mix though, and I applaud your efforts to bring this to fruition. I'd google the locations but I'm at work right now.

The person I got works a pretty hectic job with what sounds like pretty wild hours. I remembered back to when I worked the worst fucking hours ever in retail and it would drive me insane that I couldn't just relax and go to bed when I came home. I needed time to wind down and relax, as many people do after their workdays. Anyways during that part of my life I would spend hours listening to music from youtube while I desperately tried to fall asleep and like 80% of the time I ended up in a weird rabbit hole and that's why I've seen hours and hours of 9/11 footage. SO for chvrchbarrel here is a playlist of a lot of those songs that made my winding down playlist, organized in a way that gradually takes you down to some classical pieces with no vocals. These were the tried and true songs that got me to relax after a long day. I hope you enjoy it (there are, admittedly, a couple guilty pleasures on this one but it was nice that we talked about those the other day on plug.dj) Wind it Down, a playlist for chvrchbarrel 1. Joan Baez- Sad Eyed Lady of the Low Lands 2. The Beatles- I'll Follow the Sun 3. Bibio- Lovers' Carvings 4. Wilco- You and I 5. The Lumineers- Slow it Down (don't judge me for liking this one song by this band) 6. Paul Simon- Soft Parachutes 7. Billy Joel- She's Always a Woman 8. The Mamas and the Papas- Dream a Little Dream of Me 9. Simon and Garfunkel- April Come She Will 10. Rush- Rivendell 11. Claude Debussy- 2 Arabesques, L. 66: No 1 in E Major 12. Frederic Chopin- Nocturne in B-Flat Minor, Op. 9 No. 1 13. Frederic Chopin0 Nocturne in E-Flat Major, Op. 9 No. 2
