Now that the public can no longer see us, we can drop the act and discuss what this topic was meant for all along.

"LIYL" for: zircona1 I started with one of my current favorite tracks, and then moved exclusively through related artists to find the following track, trying to maximize the variation while still having a fairly natural progression. I'm pretty happy with how it came out, and I hope you enjoy it!

This playlist goes out to irvred - and it's inspired by a common connection between irv and I: the fact that we both have lived in Ohio. Irv, to my knowledge, lives in/near Columbus, and I grew up sbout 2.5 hours away in Youngstown, a small, former steel-making city in the vicinity of Cleveland and Akron. I'm not sure how familiar Irv is with the music of those triad of cities, so this playlist will serve as a primer of sorts. So here's presenting... Know Thy Neighbor: An Introduction To Cleveland/Akron Punk In The Mid-70s
I researched this topic about a two years ago for a college radio special - and decided to spruce it up and update it for Irv and The Board's enjoyment. Northeast Ohio - believe it or not - had a budding proto-punk scene running alongside the big contemporary movements in NY and London. I'm kicking off the playlist with a famous Human Beinz track - as they are literally the only successful band to make it out of Youngstown, Ohio. And then comes a live VU number, recorded at one of their frequent shows at Cleveland club, La Cave, in 1968. Those shows were attended - and cited as formative influences - by many of the figures who would populate bands in the next decade. This includes members of Rocket From The Tombs, electric eels, and Mirrors - all of which were active and recording music before the Ramones rise in 1975/76. These groups were all relatively short-lived, but other acts were formed as their members spread out. The two most well-known of these were the Dead Boys, who actually made waves playing at CBGBs in NYC (also note: lead singer Stiv Bators was also from the Youngstown-area!) - and Pere Ubu, whose avant-leanings steered them away from widespread popularity but won them a devoted cult-following (and a shout-out in "Losing My Edge"). Meanwhile, these bands dipped down to nearby Akron - the Rubber Capital of the US - to play shows and similarly inspired a movement. 15-60-75, aka The Numbers Band, were the progenitors of this scene - with their numbers going on to play with Tin Huey (whose membership included saxophonist and composer Ralph Carney), The Waitresses, and DEVO. The Akron sounds was a little more strung-out and bouncy then its more pulverizing Cleveland kin. And eventually it broke out in a major way with national success stories like The Waitresses (see, the greatest Christmas song ever: Christmas Wrapping), The Pretenders (Chrissie Hynde was famously from Akron, tho the rest of the band was British), and - maybe the quintessential NE Ohio band - DEVO. The scene was basically dead by the onset of the 1980s, with the local groups splintering and the success stories moving their bases out of Ohio as their respective stars rose. This is a common theme among NE Ohioans. Perhaps John Morton of electric eels summarizes this effect the best: "Basically, we were all trying to function in a vacuum. I have nothing nice to say about Cleveland, at least as a cultural bastion...I did get a lot of visual inspiration from the lift bridges over the Cuyahoga River: blast furnaces, ore boats. Basically though, Cleveland was and is a great place to leave." So there you have it! Hope you dig the playlist - and I encourage y'all to dig into your hometown's local scenes! The research process is fascinating and, IMO, you'll probably find some killer music. NOTE: Two of the songs here got their titles bungled by Spotify. "Drano In Your Veins" is actually "You're Gonna Watch Me" by Pressler-Morgan and "Splittery Splat" is actually "Tele-K Killing" by Broncs. Also, a few dope bands didn't have their stuff on Spotify, including Human Switchboard and Bizarros. Full track list is here, note that the songs are organized geographically, then chronologically. Youngstown 1. Human Beinz - Nobody But Me (1968) New York 2. Velvet Underground - What Goes On, Live at La Cave, Cleveland (1968) Cleveland 3. Rocket From The Tombs - So Cold (1975) 4. electric eels - Agitated (1975) 5. Mirrors - Shirley (1975) 6. Dead Boys - Sonic Reducer (1977) 7. The Styrenes - I Saw You (1977) 8. Pere Ubu - Non-Alignment Pact (1978) 9. The Pagans - Not Now No Way (1979) 10. Pressler-Morgan - You’re Gonna Watch Me (1979) 11. Broncs - Tele-K Killing (1981) 12. Defnics - 51 Percent (1981) Akron 13. 15-60-75: The Numbers Band - Narrow Road (1976) 14. Rubber City Rebels - Kidnapped (1977) 15. Jane Aire & The Belvederes - When I Was Young (1978) 16. Chi-Pig - Ring Around The Collar (1978) 17. Tin Huey - The Comb (1979) 18. The Waitresses - No Guilt (1980) 19. Pretenders - The Phone Call (1980) 20. DEVO - Gates Of Steel (1980)

This was a bit of a passion project for me, and the lion's share of the research was done like in Feb 2017, tho I updated the tracklist and added the write-up this week - hope you like it!

Ok, teekoh. Apologies again to you and everyone else for being late. Thanks for your patience. I wanted to make a simple, genre-based playlist this time, and it’s no secret that I enjoy sharing IDM/downtempo/ambient stuff with folks. Playlists are my preferred way to listen to the genre, as albums are generally more sporadic and lead to a poor listening experience, in my opinion. I focused more on tying songs together and the general “flow” of the playlist rather than who or what was on it. While there are some bigger names and songs, this is not meant to be an introduction to the genre or a Who’s Who of it. I also intentionally kept it on the shorter side (50 minutes) because I feel like ambient stuff holds a shorter attention span for most folks. This is one of my favorites that I put together. I really hope you enjoy it!

Oh hell yeah This playlist is choice. I've never listened to Lana Del Rey, Campdoggz, or Warpaint, and R.E.M. might be my biggest music blindspot. Also "Siberian Breaks" might be the GOAT MGMT song for all of you goobers who gave up on them after their first album

A couple weeks ago, Spotify played "Stillness is the Move" by Dirty Projectors and "Movement" by LCD Soundsystem back to back, so my idea for this month was to make a playlist with songs containing the word "move". It ended up being quite fun digging for some of these, and I ended up leaving some heavy hitters out. This one's for you, alady Motion1. Harry Belafonte - "Move It" 2. A Tribe Called Quest - "Keeping It Moving" 3. Dirty Projectors - "Stillness is the Move" 4. DJ Koze - "Moving in a Liquid" 5. Kate Bush - "Moving" 6. LCD Soundsystem - "Movement" 7. Syd - "Moving Mountains" 8. George Michael - "Move On" 9. The Supremes - "You Move Me" 10. Curtis Mayfield - "Move On Up" 11. The Rolling Stones - "You Gotta Move" 12. Tom Petty - "Time to Move On" Hey, this was great! I hadn't heard the Harry Belafonte, DJ Koze, Kate Bush, Syd or George Michael songs before this and the rest were artists I really enjoy. And the last three tracks are GOAT. Thanks dij!
