Here's a playlist that I put together after reading Clover Hope's The Motherlode: 100+ Women Who Made Hip-Hop, one of the best music books I've read all year. These are tracks that I liked from many of the artists covered in the book. Didn't include everyone, just tried to keep this to songs that I dug. And it introduced me to loads of artists who I'd never listened to before - from more forgotten folks like Boss, Bahamadia, and Lady of Rage; to huge names I'd never gotten to like Da Brat, Foxy Brown, Eve, and Remy Ma; plus awesome flashes in the pan like JJ Fad, MC Luscious, and L'Trimm.
Check it out!

I’m glad to hear you liked the book. I have it sitting on my coffee table, but haven’t started it yet.

As promised, here's my playlist from reading Steve Krakow's My Kind of Sound: A Secret History of Chicago Music. It collects his long-running Reader column and was an excellent read. I listened to every artist I could find on Spotify / Youtube and pared a much larger playlist ( ~300 songs) into this 100 song selection. It was originally 92, so I padded it with tracks from legends who get frequently namechecked in the book, i.e. Muddy Waters, Howlin Wolf, Chicago.
Give the playlist a listen! It prolly works best on shuffle, as right now it's just organized alphabetically. Would be curious to hear if any of y'all have seen / are familiar with some of the groups on here, especially those from the 70s-90s.

I also further categorized the artists in the playlist into subgenres - to make it a little more user-friendly for anyone interested in a particular sound or style, but who didn't feel like playing needle in the hay for an 8-hour playlist.
Weirdos / Oddball - Algebra Suicide - Bil Vermette (of VCSR) - Care of the Cow - Skafish - Vyto B - Wazmo Nariz - Yezda Urfa
Garage / Psych - American Breed - Aorta - Butterfield Blues Band - Cave Dwellers - Cryan’ Shames - Del-Vetts - Dirty Wurds - Finchley Boys - Food - Pisces - The Shady Daze - The Troll
Soul / Funk - Baby Huey - Betty Everett - Boscoe - Captain Sky - The Five Stairsteps - General Crook - LaVern Baker - Melvin Jackson - Rinaldo Domino - Rotary Connection - Ruby Andrews - Simtec Simmons - Soul Messengers
Blues - Arbee Stidham - Blind Joe Taggart - Doctor Clayton - Earl Hooker - Fenton Robinson - Robert Petway
Hard Rock / Metal - Amulance - Coven - Gollum - Medusa - Midnight
Punk / Power Pop - Epicycle - Fuse - Green - Pezband - Shoes
Jazz - Art Ensemble of Chicago - Booker Little - Eddie Harris - Hal Russell NRG Ensemble - John Klemmer - Johnny Griffin - Malachi Favors - Maurice McIntyre - Philip Cochran & the Artistic Heritage Ensemble - Roscoe Mitchell
Soft-Rock / Horn-core - Chet Nichols - Friend & Lover - The Flock - Ides of March - The Ship
TWANG - Hayden Thompson - Heartsfield - Mason Proffit
I don’t know / Folk-Soul-Country-Funk-Really Good - Terry Callier
And finally, here's what I'd consider the "Must-Listens" in the book:
Must Listens: - Algebra Suicide - Little Dead Bodies - Baby Huey - A Change Is Going To Come - Booker Little - Milestones - Captain Sky - Super Sporm - Dirty Wurds - Why - Epicycle - You’re Not Gonna Get it - Hal Russell NRG - Raining Violets - Heartsfield - Music Eyes - Mason Proffit - Two Hangmen - Maurice McIntyre - Jays - Pisces - Dear One - Renaldo Domino - Not Too Cool To Cry - Simtec Simmons - Bootlegging - Terry Callier - Oh Dear, What Can The Matter Be - Vyto B - Electronic Enforncer - Wazmo Nariz - Checking Out The Checkout Girl

Trying a new thing where I make a playlist at the end of the month full of the songs I really loved / discovered that month. Just an attempt to collect all this random music somewhere so it has less a chance of falling through the cracks of memory. Anyways, if anyone's looking for some new stuff to dig into - try this maybe?

A friend of mine who recently moved to London asked for a playlist of fall-tinged British folk. I pulled this together yesterday and figured I'd share it here. Tried to get as many traditional songs as possible (she's big into trad folk) but there's quite a few originals here too. Perfect for crisp, cloudy afternoons. Try it with some tea.

Idk if this will be the more popular one, but I decided to split my Country Music playlist into a couple different installments. This first one roughly covers 1922-1949 (there are surely exceptions w/ specific songs but basically I tried to do everything from Eck Robertson in 1922 up through the rise of Hank Williams).
Some really cool stuff here! Some of it is American Anthology of Folk Music material, then it branches into the major figures of early country. The Carter Family, Jimmie Rodgers, Roy Acuff, Bob Wills, Ernest Tubb, with other big singles included. I think it's all pretty great or at least cool to hear. Ernest Tubb prolly sounds the most 'modern' of all these folks, though I love hearing the jazz interplay in Bob Wills' music. Check it out!
Edit: Only major figure I left out is Uncle Dave Macon, who just could help himself from saying the n-word in his biggest songs...

This first one roughly covers 1922-1949 acuff and grandpa jones are trapper kept, because they both still played live in the early 1990s.

And here's the second installment of this series! This one roughly tracks the development of Country Music from Hank Williams through the rise of the "Outlaws" in the 70s. Basically, then, this serves as a primer for 50s-60s country, dipping a bit into the pop of the early 70s. I'm gonna make one for the 70s today, but decided to keep this one its own entity for the sake of brevity.
Check it out! There's incredible stuff all over this, my personal favorite discoveries this time were Ray Price, Skeeter Davis, and the Buck Owens live at Carnegie Hall album.

Okay! Here's the final installment of these playlists for now - Whiskey Bottle Over Jesus: a snapshot of 80s-00s country. Note: I am very new to this era so don't expect this to be super comprehensive. I tried to snag a bunch of mainstream and alt-country tracks that I really enjoy / love though, and I hope to keep adding to it with new finds too! So, who am I missing? What tracks/records should I check out?
Edit: Also apparently these Spotify previews only list the first 100 songs? Regardless, there's 140 total right now.

have seen everyone on your list live, except keith whitley (who died a little too young), ronnie dunn, iris dement, and tupelo before it split into 2.
I'd add my 2 favorite country albums of all time -- merle haggard live at anaheim stadium (1981), and marty stuart's this one's gonna hurt you (1992). and you have some old 97's but are missing "champaign, illinois."

Looks like you already have one track of Robert Earl Keen, who is one of my favorite songwriters ever. Check out "Love's a Word I Never Throw Around" and "Feelin' Good Again". Also Billy Joe Shaver's "Live Forever" is an elite song. I've been going through a phase of this country era as well so I can't wait to dig into your playlist.

Love what I've heard of Robert Earl Keen! I was actually planning on checking out a record or two of his this week, so I may as well just do it today. Also re: nana, "Champagne, Illinois" is awesome, reminds me of "Desolation Row" for whatever reason. That whole Grand Theatre record sounds great this morning.

Every couple years I make a long playlist around this time of year, when you're still sort of calibrating to the sun setting before you leave the office. Give it a follow if you ever want to throw some roughly-cobbled mellow vibes at your seasonal depression.

Something I put together last night after spending the last 2-3 weeks listening to Screwed Up Click / Swishahouse shit on repeat. Big recommendation to Lance Scott Walker's DJ Screw biography.
(also - used Screw as the starting point, hence why no Geto Boys / Scarface)
