I voted for nevermind, even though I never liked it while Kurt was alive. Same. I definitely like it a lot more now and can't even fathom how someone would think that Is This It could possibly compare in impact and influence. Live Through This lol

yeah the difference is popular rock music after the strokes has been 100% indebted to the strokes. With Pearl Jam and the Smashing Pumpkins popular rock music was gonna sound like grunge regardless. I feel like these are the two most wild claims in this thread and they are back to back. 1. What is "popular rock music" and how is it indebted to the Strokes? Popular in real life or popular with this board? 2. In a world where Nirvana didn't exist the Smashing Pumpkins are going to shift the landscape? Gish came out months before Nevermind and it was barely a blip. This honestly reads like a Billy Corgan pullquote.

It should also be worth noting that Ten came out before Nevermind as well, but also didn't take off until Smells Like Teen Spirit changed everything.

And also like 80% of modern hip-hop would not exist without it.

My wife refers to it as one of my "classic TED talks" when I start to get really into it.

Perhaps it's a generational thing. I was just starting high school when Nirvana exploded.

Wasn't that album written by Kurt Cobain? I mean, idk if you're trolling - if so I apologize, but that's a by-and-large sexist narrative created because people couldn't fathom that Courtney was talented enough to write her own material. Here's some relevant details from the wiki section on the record: "Following the album's release in the wake of Kurt Cobain's death, rumors began wildly circulating about the album's lyrical content and songwriting, with many people alleging that Cobain had written the album, not Courtney Love.[36] In response to the allegations, drummer Patty Schemel said: "There is that myth that Kurt wrote a lot of our songs— it's not true. Eric [Erlandson] and Courtney wrote Live Through This."[21] Cobain biographer Charles R. Cross conducted interviews with everyone associated with the record and found that all parties agreed that Love and Erlandson wrote the songs.[21] Although these rumors circulated for years to follow, much of the content on Live Through This had been written and performed during Hole's Pretty on the Inside tour. Both "Violet" and "Doll Parts", two of the album's most notable songs, had been performed as early as 1991 at various concerts, and presumably been written in 1990 or '91, when Love and Cobain were acquaintances. The first studio recordings of the songs took place during a BBC Radio broadcast for John Peel in 1991, in between US and European tours to promote Pretty on the Inside;[37][38] these recordings would later appear on the group's 1995 EP Ask for It. Early versions of "Softer, Softest", another one of the singles from Live Through This, were also performed during the tour. "Violet", "Doll Parts", and "Softer, Softest" were all performed in the same set at during a December 1991 concert at the U.L.U. in London,[39] and "Violet" was performed at Exeter several days later at a concert with Daisy Chainsaw and Therapy?.[40] The songs were individually performed at various concerts in Paris, Toronto, Los Angeles, New York, and Germany throughout the 1991 tours along with songs from Pretty on the Inside.[41][42][43]"

I was 15 in '91 when Nevermind dropped. Most of the points on this last page in particular strike me as pretty wild and I don't necessarily agree with them. That said, Nirvana and The Strokes have definitely influenced my band, probably moreso The Strokes now that I think about it, but even moreso stuff like Smashing Pumpkins, STP and The Cure. I need to think on this more. Also, Kanye hasn't influenced anything but hip-hop, while he is heavily influenced by rock. Stop acting like Kanye is god's gift to music in any capacity (this grates on me about as much as my singer, a 50 year old grown man, claiming Anthony Green is god). That's not saying his stuff isn't good. It's just a less factual opinion and has no place in serious discussion about strong rock music influencers. Don't look at me like that, Neader! **Please note the time as 9 am before I've had any coffee or additional sustenance.
