Kicking off F45 this weekend...I'm excited for it. I need something to kick myself into gear because since my last half marathon in November last year I have been LAZYYYY. The timing of the F45 classes looks pretty good and I'm looking forward to getting some more strength training in instead of just running 100% of the time.

First half marathon of 2020 on Sunday!
Not at all prepared, but it'll be a good baseline for all the races I have planned and plus I get access to a buffet at the end of the race.

I've been up since 4 with my son, so I decided to scale back my race today to a 10k. Ended up getting a PR and winning my age group. Pint glass with WINNER in giant bold letters was my prize, and I couldn't be happier.

Start of week four and I'm down 17 pounds. This is awesome. I was even dropping weight while I was in New York and eating pizza. The pizza didn't even do anything to my blood sugar, either, which is totally not what usually happens.

yo wtf that's awesome. I'm going to give what I'm doing until the end of Feb and if I'm not getting the results I like I'll give that a go.

Yeah, this is all pretty shocking, especially how well controlled my blood sugar is without me needing to take any insulin with my meals. My blood sugar was already under control with insulin, but I never thought it'd be possible for me to go without it. It's cool, too, how this isn't even really a diet or anything. It's just learning how to appropriately balance eating, etc., so I'm not worried about one day stopping and not knowing what to do.

I've lost, like, 20-25 lbs since moving out here. I guess cutting out giant meatball subs and calzone nights with The Tims has its benefits?

Been hanging around 168 for the past few days which is nice. I started off the month at 177 but a lot of that is because the holidays so unfortunately it's kinda hard to gauge how much this strict keto/omad/dry January is actually having an effect. I think I was around 173 before the holidays.
Think I'm going to join a gym gym instead of doing Orange Theory. Orange Theory is nice and I'm definitely getting a workout but I think I want to start doing an actual routine instead of just doing whatever OT is doing that day.

1 week into F45 and I love it. It is exhausting, I am sore all over, but it is motivating and the exact kind of interesting non-repetetive workout I love. I also really enjoy the short intervals of each station...even if it's an exercise I hate I can do it for 40 seconds and move on. According to the heart rate monitor I've been burning 500-700 calories per class which is awesome too.

I just went and saw my endocrinologist, who I've been seeing for the past ten years since I became diabetic (a decade as of this February or March, I think). He said it was the best he's seen me. Not only have I lost weight, but my average blood sugar level is now almost entirely normal. This is completely insane because I haven't even been taking insulin with my meals for two weeks. He's now thinking of totally changing the regimen with my medicine.
Have I mentioned how AWESOME I've been feeling?

That is such great news!
If you're willing to discuss (and obviously please feel free to disregard if you'd rather not), as an insulin-dependent diabetic, how does this differ from the nutritional advice you'd been given previously? I lost a close friend a few years ago who had type 1, and it always seemed to me that she had to monitor every bite. Even as a prediabetic myself, I've had to work with nutritionists for years, and I'm really just on the high side of normal. In terms of what to eat and how much, Noom really wasn't that different from what I've always been told to do, you know?

One thing that has been really helpful to me is, as I mentioned earlier, the color coding of different foods in the app and how they should break down in your daily budget. That's helped me to understand proper balance. Another thing is how it adjusts my calorie budget every day according to how active I've been. Whenever I feel like my remaining budget is too low (an everyday feeling, honestly), I know I need to do some stuff to earn back some calories, so it's been really easy for me to come in at budget every single day. It's been really good because it's helping me to understand not just how I should be eating but also how active I need to be for how much I'm eating.
I've thought about this a lot. You know how they always say to take things one day at a time? The app is really good in terms of keeping me disciplined and focused every single day. You've done it, so you know how the app gives you a checklist of items every day. Every single day, I'm focused on taking care of each one of those items. They're all really simple things--none of it is really new to me, either--but obviously to be so focused every day accumulates positively. One good meal, one good day...it adds up.
Oh, also, I remember one of the stories in the app said that women tend to underlog their calories by an average of 600 calories and men underlog their calories by an average of 500 calories, so I've been religious about logging every single thing and making sure I come in at or under budget--every single day.

I decided to go running this morning instead of the evening and what a terrible idea that was.
Me after running in the evening: Wow this runner's high is great, I feel great, I'm going to go home and relax.
Me after running in the morning: Wow I'm so fucking tired. Fuck this. Shit now I have to go to work. This sucks.

I used to run in the evenings pretty exclusively but it made waking up for morning races that much more difficult so I had to make the adjustment. Now 90% of my workouts are before 11am. Honestly don't miss evening runs all that much since that's when people mostly drive like maniacs.

I love numbers and data too much to not be on a treadmill and have all that information in front of me. Maybe when I get more into the groove of things and can run consistently it won't matter as much.

Yeah I am feeling a little bit more alert and productive today so I'll try it for a few more weeks.

Conquered my fears and used the racks (machine? Idk what it's called) this morning. Did some squats and bench pressed. Wooo.

Im taking longer than expected to recover between work outs. I’m assuming this is mostly due to the shit sleep I’ve been getting, but what else could be the culprit?

How long have you been working out? That's happened to me when I go back after not doing it for a while and jump right in.

Conquered my fears and used the racks (machine? Idk what it's called) this morning. Did some squats and bench pressed. Wooo. i mean, both things exist separately so either could be true here. was it a free barbell that you had to pick up and balance on your own or was it connected to the rack with a pulley system and balanced itself? Im taking longer than expected to recover between work outs. I’m assuming this is mostly due to the shit sleep I’ve been getting, but what else could be the culprit? possibly, but also how often are you going? biggest mistake i think people make is that they try to work out every day when they first start back up and it's the easiest way to exhaust your body prematurely or get hurt because your body isnt at the point where it can recover quickly enough yet. it's usually better to start with an every other day approach until you're not tired or hurting the next day and then can ramp up to a daily routine.

Well like everything I'm looking at says don't use them so that's dope. Eh - free weights are probably objectively better but if you're just starting off and getting after it the Smith machine is fine. Let's put it this way - if Pitchfork wrote about weightlifting instead of music they would hate the Smith Machine. But it is still functional.
