I'm back to prob 1,200 to 1,500 calories myself, was under 800 a day for a while which was obviously unsustainable, but I'm now down another 10 pounds since then (30 total from start) so it's obviously working somehow

Agree that monitoring caloric intake is conceptually good, but counting calorie limits is not sustainable nor does it really yield the outcomes you want. If you're eating a low calorie diet but sacrificing protein, it's just kind of eh.
I think trying to eat clean (ie cut out packaged and processed foods) gets you to a lot of the same destinations at once. It will often be lower calorie, less refined sugar, and lower sodium. Water over diet soda - same thing. That's more of a sustainable thing that you could maintain over time. Not 100% adherence, but you out of it what you put in.
I'm also from the school of thought that "low weight high rep" in the gym is often badly executed. Because if you do low weight high rep low intensity it can be limited returns. I think compound exercises where you do 8 to 12 reps on your working set with like 95% effort on the 12th rep is a good range to target. I mean, if someone is hitting the gym for the first time regularly they shouldn't be doing low rep bench 3x3s, but they also shouldn't just be sitting there doing curls with 5 pound dumbells at half intensity.

So I've had a steak dinner planned for my birthday at a place I've wanted to try for a while and I cancelled that reservation to go to another place where I can get grilled fish instead
other place is also supposed to be reaaally good also but I was hyped for that steak dinner. I'm committing to this shit. also I'm going to NOLA that weekend and I knew I'd fuck up there
my issue is more cheese, ranch, fried foods, processed foods, etc. I like fried food waaaaaaay too much which is definitely a problem I'm trying to overcome.

You don't need to deprive yourself, just watch other meals around that

You don't need to deprive yourself, just watch other meals around that well New Orleans is going to be probably bad eating + looooots of alcohol, going for a healthier meal before it will make me feel a lot better about that trip.
also I think I'm getting barbecue at some point this weekend and that doesn't help either so I'm gonna minimize in other places where I can

my issue is more cheese, ranch, fried foods, processed foods, etc. Cut that, and I'm pretty sure 98% of problems you may have go away. Given that it appears to be 98% of your diet.

Yeah I judge people who dip their food in ranch dressing. That's a bad thing to do.

We learned that basically the worst thing you can do is eat cereal first thing in the morning. I cut out soda a long time ago, but only recently cut out juice as well. It's sad how addicted you can get to a certain amount of sugar per day. man, all i basically eat is cereal for breakfast. i tend to gravitate towards "healthier" ones though.

Another simple, easy tip: Don't eat breakfast! Cry into your coffee as you contemplate your mortality and the entirely futile way we try and push back entropy within the human body!

I usually just eat a small granola bar for breakfast just to get my metabolism going.

I don't drink coffee at all either aside from the occasional espresso after dinner at a restaurant or something like that. I drink green tea like a madman at work, though. Like 5-8 mugs a day. No breakfast, early lunch.

I don't eat breakfast; in fact, I only eat, or try to anyway, between 12-8. I lost 5 pounds just doing that. I do drink way too much coffee though. I have to cut back on that.
I haven't had a soda unless whiskey was in it in 15 years after we figured out that the phosphoric acid in it was causing kidney stones.

Coffee is what makes my lack of breakfast sustainable. As long as I have a cup, I don't get hungry until about 11. That said, I try to limit it to 2 diner mugs worth a day at most.

i feel like i'd be starving and eat too many snacks later if i didn't eat breakfast in the morning. normally just have eggs, oatmeal, or avocado toast.
