Bulls are going to match the Kings 4 year $78 million offer for LaVine.

It’s a bad deal but I had no confidence in them not butchering the pursuit of 2019 free agents anyway

i don't think matching was a mistake, necessarily. it could easily turn out poorly, but i don't think it's actually a big enough chunk of the cap to be catastrophic for the bulls' decision-making going forward. and they aren't exactly in a position to be picky about talent
the real mistake was beginning a rebuild by trading for a high-variance prospect recovering from acl surgery and destined for free agency the first summer after you acquire him.

Right now for 2019-2010, the cap is projected to be $108 million and they have about $56 million devoted to: Kris Dunn Zach Lavine Denzel Valentine Chandler Hutchison Lauri Markkanen Cristiano Felicio Wendell Carter Jr Cristiano Felicio That's not including extensions for Portis and Nwaba, so the figure can reasonably be bumped up to $70 mil. So they can definitely fit in a max guy plus a decent free agent next offseason, but then they face restricted free agency for Dunn and Valentine the year after. It's not like those guys are stars are anything, but if this team is going to win 50 games any time soon, those guys will need to take huge steps forward this season and therefore get themselves a lot of money in RFA. By signing LaVine, Garpax is basically betting that Markkanen and LaVine can be the 2nd and 3rd best guys on a great team. I don't buy it.

Here is my proposed solution to this mess:
Deal Markkanen plus whatever it takes to the Spurs for Kawhi Fire Garpax and sign Jimmy and Kyrie to join Kawhi. Pray that Anthony Davis will take a bit of a hometown discount to join Kawhi/Kyrie/Jimmy
If that all doesn't work, then Plan B should just be Contract the Franchise because this is horseshit

I was pretty down on the Lavine deal, and then I saw what Portland is paying Nurkic so maybe it's not so bad after all?

The AD signing is the only unrealistic thing there. But what is the point of hoarding cap space and tanking if not to acquire multiple star players? The Celtics are literally in a perfect position to add Kawhi to a team with three stars. I mean we're not talking about a middling small market franchise here. The Chicago Bulls can and should be a destination for Kawhi, Kyrie, and Jimmy.

Unrelated but fun reminder that the Bulls will be paying $54 million dollars this year for:
Zach LaVine Robin Lopez Cristiano Felicio Omer Asik

You really think Jimmy Butler would want to come back to The Bulls?

Reinsdorf is loyal to a fault. GarPax aren't going anywhere.

My bet is on Kyrie and Jimmy teaming up on one of the NY teams next year. Both organizations should have enough flexibility next summer to pull off two max guys.

I don’t see Kyrie leaving Boston anytime soon.

They seem intent on moving Courtney Lee (which shouldn't be that difficult), so that would clear up some space. Hardaway as the off-ball shooter actually makes sense in that lineup as well. I also like the idea of the Kyrie/Butler Nets: Kyrie LeVert (with Russell coming off the bench as the Lou Williams type) Butler Rondae Allen

They don't. Cody gonna start still.
I think we get two more second round picks in the deal, too?

I'm a little excited about Isaiah Thomas on the Nuggets. That's going to be such a fun team next season

That's an excellent pickup for them. Denver will be so good next year.

The Bulls are just stockpiling forwards, huh? Maybe they think if they put enough tall guys in front of the basket the other team won't score more points

You guys are putting way too much faith in how Hoiberg will use this roster.
