great - top of page...
as your neighbor to the north, our weather guys have an interest in that storm and holy cow - some of those rain totals for the next few days are insane.

A tropical storm just dumping rain on the coast for four or five days straight sounds absolutely horrific. Stay high and dry, Texas boarders!

boss approved me working from home today thankfully, so I went to my parents house in the Beaumont area. might get hit pretty bad here too but its at least a lot less prone to flooding, and itll be a bit easier to get out of the city if we have to.
Prepared my apartment as good as we could for potential flooding. I think the complex itself is elevated a bit which is nice, but we also have a bayou right behind us so that worries me a bit. got a lot of the valuable stuff out and just about everything i could off the floor, dunno what else to do. Houston has flooded really bad before from just bad rain, a hurricane/tropical storm could be really bad, specially if it lingers like some models suspect. ugh.
got plenty of water and nonperishables and most importantly beer though so we good

man, the things im reading about the storm right now sound really really bad. hope you're ok lot.
from cnn: "The threat has prompted officials in at least one town to ask residents who stay behind to write their Social Security numbers on one of their arms in case. It will make identifying bodies easier."

lol just found a picture and the bayou right behind my apartment is already overflowing and we haven't even got but maybe 20% of the rain to come so far. fml
and yeah that warning was from the city of Rockport. I can't even imagine how much damage happened there last night. I caught a couple pictures and videos yesterday that looked bad, kind of don't want to look at anymore. this hurricane is moving incredibly slow now that its on land which doesn't help at all either

Jesus Christ
When we picked our apartment we had a choice of ground level or second floor. I'm a little bit regretting picking the ground level one right now

its starting to flood here. my grandparents house is already flooded here, we got down there (had to park and walk at a point) and couldn't really do anything to help. and things are really bad in houston right now. and the new forecasts are starting to look even worse, we may not even be halfway through this.
I'm a teensy bit worried right now. shit ain't good

good personal news- based on everything I've heard there is a very high chance my apartment ended up ok. Apparently power is even still on in that area.
bad news out of most of the city. things aren't good. its really weird, turned on the radio and they were taking calls from people giving their location and the station was asking anyone with boats if they could possibly go rescue. the mayor even put out a statement asking if anyone could help. lots of people stuck on roofs and in all around awful situations. also things could get WAY worse if one of the two major dams break, and even though they are releasing water from the dams (which was a hard decision itself because it guaranteed flooding of some houses near it) they are still filling up quicker than draining. If they overflow and break, that could wipe out part of the city. Where I am is likely safe from that, but things would be very bad for a good chunk of the city.
I feel so helpless from where I'm at. I really really want to get back to the city to help, but the storm may be entering back into the gulf and then coming through here, so I feel like I should maybe stay to help my mom and grandparents until that passes through on Wednesday. I think I decided I'm gonna spend at least part of this weekend helping where I can, I know they need a lot of help at the shelters they've created so thats probably where I'll be. I might just take a sick day at work Friday if my boss doesnt just grant me the day off to go help. I'm reading too much heartbreaking shit and I'm gonna feel awful if I dont do something

so for the record my hometown means the Beaumont area. Got hit HARD last night when the rain came back through, lots of places that have never flooded before flooded. Went way over the record for most rainfall we've ever had in a day. So, my current home and my former home are both underwater. Fun.
People are really organizing here. I made a quick run right down the road (which is thankfully clear right now) to get breakfast for my grandparents and saw a ton of people with boats and in rain gear looking like they've either been rescuing people are prepared to go do that now. kind of wish I had a boat to go help. community has really been coming together to help each other, thats maybe the only positive to take out of this. the stories are just heartbreaking. also saw at least one truck in a ditch, guessing they tried to drive during this last night. the really bad areas were blocked off by the police who were turning people around, which is good. I made sure not to sight see though since there's still rescue operations happening as we speak
if i can make it, my plan is to head back to Houston tomorrow to check on my apartment and my girlfriends place. If things are good and I don't have to deal with that, then I'm thinking about heading back to this area (the Beaumont area) maybe Saturday morning to help as much as I can around here. Had originally planned to go to New Orleans this weekend and drink my ass off. Looks like I'll be doing a shit ton of volunteer work instead (maybe still drinking my ass off once I'm done at the end of each day)

its kind of eerie hearing the rescue helicopters fly by every few minutes. it makes me feel like im in a warzone or something
things are still pretty bad. me and my family are safe but thats only because we are lucky. Lots of people have pretty much lost everything. Still people being rescued even right now in Port Arthur. There's a levee in danger too right now and I think they are contemplating some more evacuations for that, but almost every road out is flooded. I mentioned getting to Houston today, that isn't happening, every road that direction is flooded. a few places have managed to open, the grocery store near me has a line around the corner and are running low on stock. Lucky we prepared decently well and have a lot of food, because it's hard for them to get supplies into here. Donated a bunch of old stuff to a shelter today hoping it helps. Want to volunteer but I kind of need to be around for my family, my grandparents got a lot of water in their house.
Town next to me, Beaumont, lost water because the water plant got flooded and it broke something that they can't repair until waters recede. Because of that they evacuated both the hospitals there. The only direction to go that you can get to is east towards Louisiana and a lot of places that way are filling up.
not good.

My sister lives in Houston and was fortunate to be an area of the city that had very little flooding, and they live on the second story of a duplex that is situated on a hill, so aside from not really being able to go anywhere and having to keep two young kids inside for days, they ended up unscathed. They've recently been looking for houses in other parts of Houston and made offers on a bunch of houses and missed out. A lot of those houses are in areas that are now heavily flooded.

Housing may end up being a bit scarce for a few months. We had planned to meet with them this week about renewing that lease. sigh...

Crazy how few homeowners in the area had flood insurance prior to the storm. It should be a requirement in coastal cities.

Yeah there's been three "500-year floods" in the last decade or so.
