calling drake "influential" feels kinda wrong considering a big way he stayed relevant was capitalizing on the sounds of other artists/genres. "most impactful" maybe?
that's just pedantry though; he's almost certainly the Defining Artist of the Decade or whatever

If we're gonna open it up to sexual predators like Drake we may as well nominate R. Kelly and that asshole from Brand New.

Also, the correct answers are Beyoncé, Kendrick, Frank, and Drake in some order, but this question is boring so for specific rankings of these four, please consult literally any of the 20+ AOTD lists posted by major media outlets

Tyler led OFWGKTA into the mainstream, him, Frank, and Earl are huge now. OFWGKTA got white suburban kids into hip-hop like no one had except Eminem. That's why I chose him. If not him, I'd say Drake is #2, though I could easily be convinced to put him at #1. Kendrick is critically acclaimed but I don't see how he really has had a huge influence on the industry as a whole. lol What are you laughing at? White people took a break from attending hip-hop shows between 2000-2010

Couldn’t vote for them so I chose the next logical option, Greta Van Fleet Actually, no, fuck it. Which one of these options *literally* SAVED rock and roll?!? Greta’ Van Morherfuckin’ Fleet. Artist of the Decade. You’re welcome, America.

The desegregation of rap shows in 2010 was probably the second greatest civil rights moment for white people this decade

super relevant for movie fandom, too. i especially liked this part from the start:
"This was the decade that the film industry successfully turned fan culture into, in his words, “a volunteer army of PR freelancers for the biggest media companies in the world.” It’s not enough that superhero movies are the most dominant force in film right now; they also need to be defended against anyone who would dare criticize them, whether that person is a freelance critic or Martin Scorsese. It’s a worldview that grants moral superiority to the likes of Disney and Time Warner simply because these entities make (and sell you) product that you like. This is a depressing and pretty dangerous way of thinking about art under capitalism, but Pappademas’ essay felt like a distillation of similar thoughts I’ve been having about music fandom in recent years, and in 2019 in particular.

Like music fandom has been out of control since the era of Napster? And definitely before that with people lining up days in advance for the right to buy tickets to the show?
Genuinely don’t understand. Is it cause social media? Get off social media and have an actual conversation with your fellow music nerd

I will agree with him that equating fandom with murdering sociopaths is bad. Like you would think people would just google Selena at this point and go “hmm yes this is bad”. Or John Lennon. Or like....get the point of “Stan” the first time, you know?

In less than two decades, the word stan has moved from referring to a murderous, obsessive psychopath to a proud term of self-identification and aspiration. What are we doing here? It's gone mainstream, baybee.
