My parents own/live in a 3 unit brick building in Avondale (near Addison and the Kennedy). They have a long-term tenant that rents the first floor 2 bedroom 1 bath apartment for $850/month. There are deals at mom and pop owned buildings. I will pay more to not live in the same building as my landlord though. And any reasonable person should do the same what, why? as long as you're not a monster (and they're not) there shouldn't be a problem...plus since they live there they tend to take better care of things and faster. unless because of redacted.

*rings bell*
And the last time I lived with the landlord in the same building he also tried to fleece me of my security deposit and hang $3k worth of damages on me (that he had admitted and I had in writing were before we moved into the building) that he never did.
Fuck that shit. Never again.
Every other building I’ve lived in has been owned by a person who doesn’t live there. That’s the fuckin ideal
Edit: on the plus side, this was the genesis of my dad and I starting to talk again (since he's a lawyer and all) which we hadn't done in like 5 years to that point. So I guess that's something

Landlord owned units are ideal. Building-wide issues get fixed because it actually affects them.

I don't do kids and I don't do owners in the building and I'm a jaded asshole as is. Fuck everything blame everyone don't move to Logan why did you move to pilsen I moved to Pilsen because my old roommate, who I thought was gonna still live with me, hung me out to dry a week before our goddamn lease was up by signing on a studio after doing several showings with me for 2-beds behind my back. I got incredibly lucky instead of being incredibly homeless. It was literally met the dude via facebook monday, toured that night, signed the lease August 31, moved September 1 when my old lease was officially up. Maybe a 72 hour turnaround. There are no kids and no owners within my building. The guys in the unit below me travel more than I do for work and the unit next to me is all Young Working Professionals like myself. If I wasn't jonsing for my own and solely my own space I would never move. It's about as ideal as it gets

Ftr, $1060 for a nice-ish 1BR in Old Irving Park. Rent has gone up $65 total over 7 years of being here. Man I think your place is better than nice-ish, especially for that price. Big living room, sizeable kitchen, haven't seen your bedroom but having seen the rest I assumed you paid more. Thanks! I appreciate that and we really have loved it. The only complaints we have are closet/storage space.

My buddy and I lived below our landlord at a place on Newport in Chicago, and she randomly moved out and left the entire top floor vacant. I think her husband had moved to Oregon or something for a job, but it was still very abrupt. We ended up getting free access to a large driveway for the entire summer - charged Cubs fans for parking a couple weekends. It was lovely.
That's my contribution to this conversation.

Having my own place is nice except for when something goes wrong and I actually have to deal with fixing it myself.

yeah the biggest perk with renting for me is just not having to fix shit, honestly. sounds lazy af (and it is) but i just legit dont have the time and money to fix something like the water heater when it died last winter.
my landlord has been an angel so far and always comes over the day i text him to help fix anything.
also he has someone shovel our front and back stairwells and alley entrance whenever it snows which is so so nice.

I love owning my own place but yeah I have to have my AC and furnace replaced once it warms up (AC died in the fall, getting one last season out of the furnace), and that's gonna SUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUCK on my wallet.
That's the first big mandatory expense I've had in four years though. I had one of my showers redone but that was a vanity project vs something I had to do.

the gf would prob be commuting over to university of chicago and it seems like a disaster to get there by transit

I have a car, but I don't drive it often anymore - about 2k miles/year. As long as you live in an area where street parking is relatively easy (or a place that comes with parking), having a car in the city is no problem.

We have one here, too, but really only drive on the weekends to visit family/run errands. Our block has free parking and it’s easy enough with a reasonably sized car.

It depends on the neighborhood but as others have said if you're willing to walk a few blocks/get lucky location wise you can find free street parking pretty much anywhere. Just gotta watch the signs for street cleanings and be prepared to move it should snow happen

the gf would prob be commuting over to university of chicago and it seems like a disaster to get there by transit If u don't want to live in Hyde Park you just need to live off the Red Line its not too big a deal. The bus's to campus run all the time from 63rd or downtown. Always seems more stressful as a concept than in reality.

Folks I am already mad at Uber for this ridesharing tax thing. The city is absolutely right to levy a tax on them but I've been noticing they charge the fee on the back endrather than letting you know up front and in your receipt just put "Chicago made us do it!"
What an absolute shit company.

I know. It seems like Uber's been doling out lots of discounts to hide it because the fees for rides are sky high now.
