Hi friends. Since I am solo for the holiday and I have reservations at RPM Xmas Eve I thought I'd go down early and do some sort of walking tour of the city. Looks like WTTW has an architecture walking tour but I have no idea if it'll be good or not. Anyone know of any reputable companies/organizations that would have an app where I could do a walking tour of the loop? History, architecture, whatever.

GPS My City has walking tour apps for several cities, including Chicago. It's free from what I recall.

Just learned about dibs and wow.

In the week after the February 2011 snowstorm, for example, police responded to more than 30 reports of dibs-related car damage. Almost half of the victims found their tires slashed, while nine had smashed windows and others had scratched doors, broken mirrors and dents. During another February week in 2015, police responded to at least 29 reports of dibs revenge. Again, the vast majority of dibs avengers slashed tires or smashed windows, but they also keyed doors, damaged antennas, covered a car in eggs and flour and, in one case, cut the car’s brake lines. One dibs vigilante “slashed two of the victim’s tires and spray painted the word ‘B----’ on a victim’s door,” the police report says. Another posted a picture on Instagram of their knife in the victim’s tire with a message that read: “The struggle is real. People want to be disrespectful and careless of others [sic] hard work, this is what is going to happen…” according to the police report.

that was probably the winter where i parked at kumas in a spot where there was a chair in the middle of a shoveled lot and everyone in the restaurant stared at me like i had just kicked their dog. a waitress eventually suggested i go move my car before someone slashed the tires.

2015 was a magical time for anti-dibs on my block. Everyone just helped each other shovel and then just tacitly agreed to keep the same space. Whenever someone tried to put chairs in a spot they were just thrown out.

That was also the year a mail truck got stuck in the middle of the road down the block and the post office just left it there for a week. Good times.

Once upon a time (the mid 1970s) my uncle had shoveled out a spot for the elderly dude who was living in my grandparents building once upon a time. Some shitty neighbor in his brand new Cadillac, who knew that an elderly man with mobility issues parked there, took the spot.

When my uncle came back from his shift at like midnight, he discovered the car there. He then proceeded, with temperatures in the teens, to fill bucket after bucket of water from a hose, dumping it on the caddy, freezing it over.

Caddy fella spent hours chiseling himself out in the morning and, uh, never parked there again.
