I understand that this might be your take but try not to give this one to neader I'm such a curmudgeon for the last 15-years of their career, I almost think I'd include them in the top three had they broken up before/after Angles. their output post-angles does not negate their impact/early career tho man.

It was already bubbling, but I credit them a bit for presaging that folk-boom that took hold of the early 2010s. That sound has def faded since tho. And I think you can credit some of the acceptance/resurgence of jam vibes to them, too, even if they haven't really gone hard in that direction themselves. Also want to give props here to.... THE NATIONAL for spearheading the Day of the Dead compilation, which - in addition to re-introducing me to the Dead - really catalyzed them into an accepted / major band amongst indie kids. I want to one day write a 33 1/3 book about that record.

Yeah thanks to The National no one would have heard of The Grateful Dead. Or music for that matter. Or sleeping soundly in a venue.

No, it doesn't. But it shapes the way I personally perceive them just enough for me to slot other groups ahead of them. It's intangible for me. Should the Greatest American Band be a band that has functionally persisted as a paycheck for the last decade? It's kind of unfair for me to judge them that harshly, but I can't help it. Part of Greatness, to me, involves having a love of the game in both output and live show. When it seems like they'd all really rather work on their solo stuff than create together, I can't help but discount them as a unit. Tweedy & co have solo projects, but, IMO, Wilco doesn't seem like a means to an end, for them. Does any of this make sense? Idk.

Fugees probably miss the time period cutoff for this right?

Yeah thanks to The National no one would have heard of The Grateful Dead. Or music for that matter. Or sleeping soundly in a venue. I know this is a joke, but I just want to clarify. There seems to have been a shift in critical opinion / young-person opinion on the Dead from slightly passé to cool that happened around 2015-2017. I don't want to attribute causality to Day of the Dead for that, but I think it was a watershed moment of sorts during that period.

Fugees probably miss the time period cutoff for this right? Fugees are the Greatest Band that could make me a.) wait 3 hours for a concert, b.) only play 6 songs, but c.) still feel like it was 100% worth it So that has to count for something, right?

I'm checking out of this debate b/c I probably need to do my job a little bit today. But I wanna just say, I'm proud of this Board that we can still have a 4+ page music argument on a random Friday afternoon.
And, also, I realize that I'm completely moving my own goalposts just to exclude the Strokes from this narrative. And I'm not sorry for that lmao.

Various Powerman 5000 songs have been used in media, including television film soundtracks, and video games. This includes such game titles as FreQuency, Shaun Palmer's Pro Snowboarder, NASCAR Thunder 2004, SX Superstar, Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 2, Shadow the Hedgehog, NHL Hitz 2003, WWE SmackDown! vs. RAW, Gran Turismo 3: A-Spec and WWE WrestleMania 21, along with the racing game Baja 1000; Score International. Film soundtracks such as Dracula 2000, Evolution, Blade II, Freddy vs. Jason, Titan AE, Little Nicky, Universal Soldier: The Return, Zoolander and Bride of Chucky have all featured the work of Powerman 5000. The song "Bombshell" was also used extensively as the entrance music for the WWE tag team The Dudley Boyz. The game WWE SmackDown! vs. RAW featured three new songs from the band. Mr. Spider hoped the songs would gain popularity from the game alone, seeing the success of music through video games.[44] They were parodied in the SpongeBob SquarePants episode "Missing Identity" as Stingray 5000; Patrick picks up an album by that band called "You Rock My Clams" and says "These guys rock!".
Thats the entirety of American culture post 1991

i want a thread called "texts from our parents" Fun story: my mom was complaining once that she doesn't ever receive texts from our family, and we checked her phone and she had over 250 unread messages . She though the dings she heard were coming from somewhere else and never bothered to check her phone.

Also, I love our parents, but Boomers already get to decide everything else in this country. They don't have to swing this issue too. To clarify this point, as well - adding the Boomer check as merely an indicator of widespread generational appeal. Certainly if we left the question to them they'd pick Springsteen or something.
