The new podcast about The National called Coffee and Flowers came out yesterday. They’re doing track by track discussions of Boxer to start.
After the introductory episode I was thinking “damn these guys make a lot of huge statements about how they wouldn’t have gotten through college without this band and it makes them sound like dumb fanboys” and then the next episode started which opens with Fake Empire which had me feeling a sort of way and then I remembered that I also am a dumb fanboy.
Anyways the actual content is really good when it’s based in interviews with the band and band adjacent people. It’s not amazing when it’s just the hosts talking. They’ll also play a section of the song and then read the lyrics which feels wildly unnecessary, especially when they’re like “We’re half awake in a fake empire.......... we’re half awake in a fake empire”. Like I get it the song repeats but I just heard the same line 4 times in a row.
They also traveled from London to Cincinnati for homecoming fest and were talking about how cool it was seeing them play Boxer in full and I started to feel jealous and then promptly remembered that I was also there, so that’s cool.

I'll always remember watching The National play "Fake Empire" on Letterman and my grandfather saying he'd "give it a 7"

10-hour Comedy Bang Bang this week to celebrate the 10-year anniversary. I'm about 3 hours in. Remarkable how many funny people this show has introduced me to.

OK I have a short term data entry gig so I need some non-comedy/non-chatty podcast suggestions. I like true crime stuff that has some kind of mystery and isn't just overhwelmingly grim as well as cults and the paranormal. I like stuff i can just binge straight thru in a day. I have recently listened to:
Dr. Death - ok Dirty John - good Shrink Next Door - so far a big waste of time Gateway: Teal Swan - v good Heaven's Gate - p good Uncover Season 1 - ok Transmissions from Jonestown - great Charles Mansons episodes of You Must Remember This - all time great podcast Dear Franklin Jones - big wasted potential on this one
Have tried but have given up for various reasons: Casefile - good but v grim Astonishing Legends - these guys have kinda gone up their own butts a bit
please no last podcast on the left or my favorite murder esque shows

This is extremely not my genre but E really likes it and she likes "Oh No with Ross and Carrie" although she says it can be a teeny bit chatty? I guess it depends on what you mean by that. She also likes a couple with generic ass names, one being "Cults", the other being "Serial Killers" so I don't know but she seems to enjoy these and says you would too based on what you've said.
I also liked The Dream, which is about MLMs

Apparently on Oh No with Ross and Carrie they did an episode with the Gateway:Teal Swan guy. She told me to tell you that.

The "cults" podcast is reallll bad. v much an algorithim for ad money. I like "Oh No With Ross and Carrie" at times, considering its a perfect concept, but I wish it was hosted by anyone other than ross and carrie. Will check out that Teal Swan ep
I'll check out the Dream podcast seems up my alley.

Listened to the oh no about teal this morning. Enjoyed it with the context of the first podcast but without it it’s two people kinda just jumping around making fun of a self help seminar I was not at lol

Found it weird how much the host laughed at abuse and stuff but I guess it was more of a nervous defense mechanism? Otherwise was great.

The description/guest of today’s Hollywood Handbook destroyed me and now I’m worried the episode can in no way live up to my expectations. Where's a good spot to jump into Hollywood Handbook? Just like, currently? Or are there a few really great episodes to get me into it. Lotta driving coming up, gotta start something new.

Dead Authors is also amazing but it is no HH.
I’ll come up with a list of my fave eps... it is kind of impenetrable.

If you’re familiar with Comedy Bang Bang at all I’d recommend finding the episodes where Sean and Hayes were the guests because that is a pretty easy way to get acclimated to their schtick.

I was actually going to sincerely ask if this was the case, because I've gone through two of those, and they were...a bit abrasive, even to me.

I just decided to throw on a recent Doug Benson one, he's one of my favs That is a very good one in the current era of HH but the format/conceit has changed a lot throughout the years so I’ll recommend you some old ones as well.

After the HH guys appeared on Comedy Bang Bang for the first time, they released a clip show called "Moments of Greatness, Our Constant Companions." It was my entrypoint to the show and I was hooked. As for full episodes, I would add to irvred's list:
#31 Dave Thomas, Our Close Friend #56 Iliza Schlesigner, Our Close Friend #97 Julie Klausner, Our Close Friend #118 Chris Gethard, Our Close Friend (and #138, Chris Gethard, Sean's Close Friend) #102 Joe Wengert Again, Our Close Friend #151 Beck Bennett, Our Once Friend #170 The Wendigabrus, Our Close Friend #261 Jameela Jamil, Our Close Friend
