fwiw i saw a ton of rock n recycle sorta people out collecting trash for free 2018 tickets on sunday. but literally only on sunday. I saw some of these too. Seemed very odd though. They were using gallon sized ziplock bags and were collecting very specific things. I saw one guy with a bag full of cigarette butts. Nobody seemed to be collecting cans, cups, or those goofy wine containers though. The cleanup program was specifically for small pieces of trash "smaller than a silver dollar" although idk why. The lack of recycling bins throughout the park made me sad. Almost all the drinks were served in cans and then all those cans ended up in the trash.

I'll tell you one thing: NIN's stripped-down, minimalist stage design was tough as hell to take pictures of. Between the darkness, the strobes, and the smoke, 99% of my shots came out looking like Piss Christ.
edit: I'll tell you two things. Kind of annoyed at the smallest stage (Heather Owen) being the "girl band quarantine stage" for yet another year.

that's honestly funny cause i was saying this is the first time ive seen NIN where i actually got decent pics because of the stripped down style
(bear in mind im talking about shitty phone pics, not like quality camera shit)

i got a decent video during "march of the pigs", but otherwise my NIN photos would all need serious work to be presentable. like usual, i really only got good photos in daylight. though i played around with jawbreaker photos to get one ok enough to brag on instagram.
jawbreaker starting out with "boxcar" was such a good move. i listen to Bivouac least of their albums, but that set was still pure nostalgia for me. i loved it.
i think my biggest surprise of the weekend was the menzingers. i've never given them a full listen and then was way into them on sunday.

Be happy you were actually ALLOWED to take photos. RF had a shit ton of last second restrictions which is rare. Usually the artists reps tell you the week leading up any and all restrictions. Day of restrictions/full out bans last weekend:
Friday- Nine Inch Nails Saturday- Peaches, Dead Cross, Fidlar, Gogol Bordello and Bad Brains were one song only. Wu-Tang limited to first 20 photographers, regardless of outlet being represented. Queens Of The Stone Age, At The Drive-In had to be approved by their PR rep which was limited to like AP, Tribune and fucking COS. Sunday- Paramore (pre-approved only), MIA (pre-approved), Bosstones were one song only.
That's A LOT for one weekend. For example, when I covered Lolla, there were three restrictions all weekend. Open Air only had Kiss limited to three songs and Ozzy was a no.

It's mostly frowned upon unless you are doing crowd/scene shots. I did a few for Queens but for an example, if you're caught doing that for anything Danzig, you are to have your memory stick taken away.

PS Riot Fest with a baby is surprisingly fun. Also, girl who took a video of us during Prophets of Rage -- baby giggling wildly as I bounced her up and down while screaming "A BULLET IN YOUR HEAD, A BULLET IN YOUR FUCKIN HEAD" -- if you're on this board, please send me that video.

Another great year at this festival, my only real complaints would be the weather and strict security on early Friday. The water was much improved from last year, and the stage layout still works surprisingly well, though Sleeping's comments about the bands relegated to the corner stage have merit. Couple bottlenecks during the day, leaving obviously the worst of it, but nothing unbearable.
A lot of good sets, but acts of particular note and rank:
QotSA NIN TVotR FIDLAR DFA Gogol Bordello Black Pistol Fire The Regrettes
That all said, I'm still angry about some of the conflicts, and I can't believe I willingly left after 20 minutes of Streetlight.

Couple bottlenecks during the day, leaving obviously the worst of it, but nothing unbearable. Can someone please explain this to me? I think I only saw three bands on that stage all weekend (The Hotelier, The Flatliners and Culture Abuse), but they all seemed appropriately sized bands for that stage and were all-male groups.

Kind of annoyed at the smallest stage (Heather Owen) being the "girl band quarantine stage" for yet another year. I would not disagree that Riot Fest could do a better job of booking female acts in top spots, but I wouldn't say those that were booked this year were quarantined: On Sunday, Dessa, MIA, Kitten Forever, Downtown Boys, Best Coast, Paramore, and That Dog. were all on one of the other four stages (whereas Upset, Versus, and Karen Black were on Heather Owens). You could go a step further and say that the Rise Stage and the Radicals Stage had just as many female (fronted) bands as the Heather Owens Stage.

Paramore is a woman and she basically headlined #Equality #WeDidIt

yeah, the complaint doesn't make any sense. smaller acts played mostly on the heather owens stage. additionally, smaller acts opened the larger stages each day, including skating polly, rvivr, and downtown boys.

Ok, glad to know I'm not the only person who didn't recognize this supposed discrepancy.
FWIW, that dog. probably had the smallest crowd I saw all weekend and they were still given a pretty good spot on the main stage. Personal tastes and conflicts aside, the schedule seemed pretty on-point in terms of putting bands where they belonged. Even Paramore wasn't as much of a clusterfuck as a lot of us expected it to be, probably because they did such a good job with the counter-programming.

I thought they did a great job regarding placing artists on the appropriate stages. The only one I would have moved is Wu-Tang Clan, putting them over on the Rise versus Radicals stage. That stage led to a bottleneck making it nearly impossible to get to Heather Owen stage for Streetlight (for those like me who got a late start due to being denied photo coverage).

what were the crowds like on the heather owens stage for the bigger night acts like andrew wk and streetlight? there was a ton of space in the audience area by that stage but i'd think it'd get really packed trying to get there through the carnival rides and trees

Can't speak for WK but streetlight seemed manageable.

that wu tang crowd was so big its the only time i felt uncomfortable during the festival and it was so stupid to not put them on a MainStage.
for everyones talk about how many people would be at paramore I thought their crowd was pretty small even though the sound was real bad so if you weren't 10 feet from the stage it wouldnt matter.
i thought it was good how the whole weekend felt full but never overwhelmingly so. Having smaller headliners but bigger subs this year probably helped.

There was plenty of room to dance on the fringes. I wouldn't call it overcrowded by any stretch of the imagination. The only other time I was over there late in the evening was for Nothing More, and I was able to the third row in front of the bassist without any hassle. That crowd was tiny.

I was at Heather Owens for both Streetlight and Andrew WK. Prior to the fest (or when I first saw that stage) I feared that it would be mayhem on that stage at night. Both times it was very manageable.
The only time Heather Owens was way too crowded, that I noticed, was for GWAR. I couldn't even move back there. The crowd pushed into the portapotties.

Being on that stage between in a slot between Ministry and NIN was a rough break for them. At just about any other time I would have seen them but I wasn't trekking across and back the fest through the crowds.

Same for the Cribs. I had a good spot for New Order during Ministry, and it just wasn't worth the effort to get over there for the Cribs at that point.

I know they can't because it'd strand the Radicals stage as an island, but I really wish they'd open up a path behind it.

Here's an idea: take bands from the Tony Hawk soundtrack(s) and ask them to come play Riot Fest (i.e. Zebrahead, Bodyjar). Nostalgia is a hell of a drug.
